    Learning Human Poses from Monocular Images

    In this research, we mainly focus on the problem of estimating the 2D human pose from a monocular image and reconstructing the 3D human pose based on the 2D human pose. Here a 3D pose is the locations of the human joints in the 3D space and a 2D pose is the projection of a 3D pose on an image. Unlike many previous works that explicitly use hand-crafted physiological models, both our 2D pose estimation and 3D pose reconstruction approaches implicitly learn the structure of human body from human pose data. This 3D pose reconstruction is an ill-posed problem without considering any prior knowledge. In this research, we propose a new approach, namely Pose Locality Constrained Representation (PLCR), to constrain the search space for the underlying 3D human pose and use it to improve 3D human pose reconstruction. In this approach, an over-complete pose dictionary is constructed by hierarchically clustering the 3D pose space into many subspaces. Then PLCR utilizes the structure of the over-complete dictionary to constrain the 3D pose solution to a set of highly-related subspaces. Finally, PLCR is combined into the matching-pursuit based algorithm for 3D human-pose reconstruction. The 2D human pose used in 3D pose reconstruction can be manually annotated or automatically estimated from a single image. In this research, we develop a new learning-based 2D human pose estimation approach based on a Dual-Source Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DS-CNN). The proposed DS-CNN model learns the appearance of each local body part and the relations between parts simultaneously, while most of existing approaches consider them as two separate steps. In our experiments, the proposed DS-CNN model produces superior or comparable performance against the state-of-the-art 2D human-pose estimation approaches based on pose priors learned from hand-crafted models or holistic perspectives. Finally, we use our 2D human pose estimation approach to recognize human attributes by utilizing the strong correspondence between human attributes and human body parts. Then we probe if and when the CNN can find such correspondence by itself on human attribute recognition and bird species recognition. We find that there is direct correlation between the recognition accuracy and the correctness of the correspondence that the CNN finds

    Detect-and-Track: Efficient Pose Estimation in Videos

    This paper addresses the problem of estimating and tracking human body keypoints in complex, multi-person video. We propose an extremely lightweight yet highly effective approach that builds upon the latest advancements in human detection and video understanding. Our method operates in two-stages: keypoint estimation in frames or short clips, followed by lightweight tracking to generate keypoint predictions linked over the entire video. For frame-level pose estimation we experiment with Mask R-CNN, as well as our own proposed 3D extension of this model, which leverages temporal information over small clips to generate more robust frame predictions. We conduct extensive ablative experiments on the newly released multi-person video pose estimation benchmark, PoseTrack, to validate various design choices of our model. Our approach achieves an accuracy of 55.2% on the validation and 51.8% on the test set using the Multi-Object Tracking Accuracy (MOTA) metric, and achieves state of the art performance on the ICCV 2017 PoseTrack keypoint tracking challenge.Comment: In CVPR 2018.     Computer analysis of objects’ movement in image sequences: methods and applications

    Computer analysis of objects’ movement in image sequences is a very complex problem, considering that it usually involves tasks for automatic detection, matching, tracking, motion analysis and deformation estimation. In spite of its complexity, this computational analysis has a wide range of important applications; for instance, in surveillance systems, clinical analysis of human gait, objects recognition, pose estimation and deformation analysis. Due to the extent of the purposes, several difficulties arise, such as the simultaneous tracking of manifold objects, their possible temporary occlusion or definitive disappearance from the image scene, changes of the viewpoints considered in images acquisition or of the illumination conditions, or even nonrigid deformations that objects may suffer in image sequences. In this paper, we present an overview of several methods that may be considered to analyze objects’ movement; namely, for their segmentation, tracking and matching in images, and for estimation of the deformation involved between images.This paper was partially done in the scope of project “Segmentation, Tracking and Motion Analysis of Deformable (2D/3D) Objects using Physical Principles”, with reference POSC/EEA-SRI/55386/2004, financially supported by FCT -Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia from Portugal.
