Additional Evidence on the Homogeneity of the Value of Government Grazing Leases and Changing Attributes for Ranch Values

Using Wyoming ranch sales from 1979-1983 and 1989-1993, this study investigates how ranch value determining attributes may have changed over this period. The 1979-1983 period is one of political stability and rising prices. In constrast, the 1989-1993 period is one of political uncertainty but stable prices. It is found, during 1989-1993, ranch prices were based more on productivity; whereas, during the earlier period, prices were based more on speculative potential. Also, it is found that government grazing leases were valued differently between time periods, ecological regions, and types of leases. This suggests that the current single-price grazing fee commonly used misprices many leases. Because of the heterogeneity in the value of grazing leases, we recommend a variable-fee form of pricing be adopted.

This collection contains materials related to the West Virginia White House Conference on Families held in 1980 and the Women’s Work Conference held in Huntington, West Virginia in 1983. WVWHC materials include conference schedules, rules, and planning materials for West Virginia’s participation in this initiative as well as materials related to publicity, testimony from scholars, newspaper and magazine articles about the conference and about families in American life, the history, goals, and suggested themes as supplied by the White House, as well as expectations for state activities. A large part of these materials are letters and documentation sent from the White House, demonstrating presidential expectations for these conferences. Women’s Work Conference materials include a proposal for the conference as well as planning materials, suggested workshops, booths present, handouts with job and workshop information, letters of thanks from attendees, and lists of resources

<p>OBJECTIVE: To examine trends in coronary heart disease and stroke mortality in migrants to England and Wales.</p> <p>DESIGN: Cross-sectional.</p> <p>OUTCOME MEASURES: Age-standardised and sex-specific death rates and rate ratios 1979-83, 1989-93 and 1999-2003.</p> <p>RESULTS: Coronary mortality fell among migrants, more so in the second decade than the first. Rate ratios for coronary mortality remained higher for men and women from Scotland, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and South Asia, and lower for men from Jamaica, other Caribbean countries, West Africa, Italy and Spain. Rate ratios increased for men from Jamaica (1979-83: 0.45, 0.40 to 0.50; 1999-2003: 0.81, 0.73 to 0.90), Pakistan (1979-83: 1.14, 1.04 to 1.25; 1999-2003: 1.93, 1.81 to 2.06), Bangladesh (1979-83: 1.36, 1.15 to 1.60; 1999-2003: 2.11, 1.90 to 2.34), Republic of Ireland (1979-1983: 1.18, 1.15 to 1.21; 1999-2003: 1.45, 1.39 to 1.52) and Poland (1979-83: 1.17, 1.09 to 1.25; 1999-2003: 1.97, 1.57 to 2.47), and for women from Jamaica (1979-83: 0.63, 0.52 to 0.77; 1999-2003: 1.23, 1.06 to 1.42) and Pakistan (1979-83: 1.14, 0.88 to 1.47; 1999-2003: 2.45, 2.19 to 2.74), owing to smaller declines in death rates than those born in England and Wales. Rate ratios for stroke mortality remained higher for migrants. As a result of smaller declines, rate ratios increased for men from Pakistan (1979-1983: 0.99, 0.76 to 1.29; 1999-2003: 1.58, 1.35 to 1.85), Scotland (1979-1983: 1.11, 1.04 to 1.19; 1999-2003: 1.30, 1.19 to 1.42) and Republic of Ireland (1979-1983: 1.27, 1.19 to 1.36; 1999-2003: 1.67, 1.52 to 1.84).</p> <p>CONCLUSION: For groups with higher mortality than people born in England and Wales, mortality remained higher. Smaller declines led to increasing disparities for some groups and to excess coronary mortality for women from Jamaica. Maximising the coverage of prevention and treatment programmes is critical.</p&gt

A model study of potential sampling errors due to data scatter around expendable bathythermograph transects in the Tropical Pacific

    Get PDF
We describe a series of sampling sensitivy experiments to examine potential errors due to data scatter around expendable bathythermograph (XBT) transects in the tropical Pacific. We use a linear, multiple vertical mode model forced with three differrent monthly mean wind stress sets for the period 1979-1983. The model is sampled along approximately straight lines of grid points corresponding to the mean positions of XBT tracks in the eastern, central, and western Pacific and then sampled again at the dates and location of actual XBT casts for 1979-1983. Model dynamic heights are calculated with a resolution of 1° of latitude and 1 month, then processed to a monthly mean seasonal cycle and anomalies associated with the 1982-1983 El Nino. When results are compared for the two methods of sampling, the model indicates that data scattered zonally around XBT transects in general can lead to about 2 dyn cm error in dynamic height (equivalent to a 10-m error in model pycnocline displacement) in composite sections of XBT data

This study aimed to further elucidate the process of identity adaptation in people with schizophrenia by talking to them about their illness. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine community-dwelling people with schizophrenia. Analysis was performed using Krippendorf’s approach, and Text Mining. Eleven content categories were derived: “illness acceptance”, “self-control”, “help from family”, “help from friends”, “help from doctors or nurses”, “modifying thinking”, “social roles and activities”, “worthwhile work”, “enjoyment of life”, “being happy”, and “being free”. Participants with schizophrenia were found to attain “illness acceptance” based on “help from family”, “help from friends”, and “help from doctors and nurses”. Text mining results is 400 keywords were identified. The top 5 in order of importance and frequency were: “omou” (feel/think), “naru” (become), “iu” (say), “suru” (do), and “kusuri” (medication). As a result of an interactive process surrounding the concepts of “illness acceptance”, “self-control” and “modifying thinking” the participants sought out “social roles and activities” and “worthwhile work” to acquire a social identity. Thus, it was found that the participants felt they “enjoyed life and were happy” and “they were free”, because they were productive members of society
