Smoking--once a socially accepted behavior--is the leading preventable cause of death and disability in the United States. During the first decades of the 20th century, lung cancer was rare; however, as cigarette smoking became increasingly popular, first among men and later among women, the incidence of lung cancer became epidemic (Figure 1). In 1930, the lung cancer death rate for men was 4.9 per 100,000; in 1990, the rate had increased to 75.6 per 100,000. Other diseases and conditions now known to be caused by tobacco use include heart disease, atherosclerotic peripheral vascular disease, laryngeal cancer, oral cancer, esophageal cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, intrauterine growth retardation, and low birthweight. During the latter part of the 20th century, the adverse health effects from exposure to environmental tobacco smoke also were documented. These include lung cancer, asthma, respiratory infections, and decreased pulmonary functionIncludes biographical sketch and portrait of Ernst L. Wynder.1999992

Econometric Models of Agriculture in OECD Countries: Production, Income, and Agrarian Employment in Spain, France, Japan, and the Usa, 1965-99.

Get PDF
We present a general view of agricultural employment in four OECD countries: Spain, France, Japan and the USA during the period 1900-1999 and we analyse the effects of the technological transformation this sector underwent during the period 1965-99, by means of an econometric model for agrarian employment and real valued added. A pooled regression is selected after testing the homogeneity of parameters in the four countries. The conclusions point to the important diminution in relative prices of agriculture as the main explanatory variable which accounts both for employment decrease and stagnation, or decline, in agricultural real income, in spite of high increases in real production. The study of this is important as many developing countries are now facing such a socio-economic transformation. There is a need for a change in order to foster analyses of income, prices and other important variables related with the quality of life both of farmers and consumers.

Improvements in workplace safety--United States, 1900-1999

Get PDF
At the beginning of this century, workers in the United States faced remarkably high health and safety risks on the job. Through efforts by individual workers, unions, employers, government agencies, scientists such as Dr. Alice Hamilton, and others, considerable progress has been made in improving these conditions. Despite these successes, much work remains, with the goal for all workers being a productive and safe working life and a retirement free from long-term consequences of occupational disease and injury. Using the limited data available, this report documents large declines in fatal occupational injuries during the 1900s, highlights the mining industry as an example of improvements in worker safety, and discusses new challenges in occupational safety and health.Includes biographical sketch and portrait of Alice Hamilton. At the beginning of this century, workers in the United States faced remarkably high health and safety risks on the job. During the 20th century, the health and life expectancy of persons residing in the United States improved dramatically. Since 1900, the average lifespan of persons in the United States has lengthened by greater than 30 years; 25 years of this gain are attributable to advances in public health (1). To highlight these advances, MMWR will profile 10 public health achievements (see box) in a series of reports published through December 1999.Many notable public health achievements have occurred during the 1900s, and other accomplishments could have been selected for the list. The choices for topics for this list were based on the opportunity for prevention and the impact on death, illness, and disability in the United States and are not ranked by order of importance. The first report in this series focuses on vaccination, which has resulted in the eradication of smallpox; elimination of poliomyelitis in the Americas; and control of measles, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria, Haemophilus influenzae type b, and other infectious diseases in the United States and other parts of the world.Ten Great Public Health Achievements -- United States, 1900-1999• Vaccination• Motor-vehicle safety• Safer workplaces• Control of infectious diseases• Decline in deaths from coronary heart disease and stroke• Safer and healthier foods• Healthier mothers and babies• Family planning• Fluoridation of drinking water• Recognition of tobacco use as a health hazard1999992
