The users may communicate via mobile or hand-held terminals, which may also provide access to terrestrial cellular communications services. While the first and second International Mobile Satellite Conferences (IMSC) mostly concentrated on technical advances, this Third IMSC also focuses on the increasing worldwide commercial activities in Mobile Satellite Services.     The mobile satellite service (MSS) systems for global personal communications

    A worldwide interest has arisen on personal communications via satellite systems. The recently proposed mobile satellite service(MSS) systems are categorized four areas: geostationary earth orbit(GEO) systems, medium earth orbit(MEO) systems, low earth orbit(LEO) systems, and highly elliptical orbit(HEO) systems. Most of the systems in each category are introduced and explained including some technical details. The communication links and orbital constellations of some systems are analyzed and compared with different categories, and with different systems. Some economical aspects of the systems are mentioned. The regulatory issues about frequency spectrum allocation, and the current technical trends in these systems are summarized

    Use of the 30/20 GHz band by multipurpose satellite systems

    The World Administrative Radio Conference (WARC) held in 1992 allocated the bands 19.7-20.2 GHz and 29.5-30.0 GHz to both the Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) and the Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) on a co-primary basis. An economic and flexible solution for the provision of both services is to place both payloads on one spacecraft. Some of the proposed applications of such a hybrid satellite network are described. It also examines the facility for spectrum sharing between the various applications and discusses the impact on coordination. It is concluded that the coordination process would not be more onerous than traditional FSS inter-satellite coordination

    Mobile Commerce has staged a remarkable come-back. Driven by the technological innovations in the field of telecommunications, it is showing signs of a healthy recovery. The collapse of the dot-com boom in 2001/2002 had dealt a severe blow not only to Electronic Commerce but also to Mobile Commerce, which was just about developing at that time. In addition to a general lack of customer demand for mobile, location-based, services, it suffered heavily under the technical deficiencies of end-devices, slow data transmission and unripe technological standards. These factors in turn had a negative impact on the customer acceptance of mobile services and whatever little demand was available, was rendered useless. Many of the environmental conditions have changed since then. Technology innovations have reduced many barriers to acceptance. Increasing globalization has led to more mobility and therefore to greater demand for mobile, ubiquitios services that can be consumed anytime, anywher. This paper examines different telecommunication technologies regarding their suitablilty and deficiencies.     Electromagnetic radiation from ingested sources in the human intestine between 150 MHz and 1.2 GHz

    The conventional method of diagnosing disorders of the human gastro-intestinal (GI) tract is by sensors embedded in cannulae that are inserted through the anus, mouth, or nose. However, these cannulae cause significant patient discomfort and cannot be used in the small intestine. As a result, there is considerable ongoing work in developing wireless sensors that can be used in the small intestine. The radiation characteristics of sources in the GI tract cannot be readily calculated due to the complexity of the human body and its composite tissues, each with different electrical characteristics. In addition, the compact antennas used are electrically small, making them inefficient radiators. This paper presents radiation characteristics for sources in the GI tract that should allow for the optimum design of more efficient telemetry systems. The characteristics are determined using the finite-difference time-domain method with a realistic antenna model on an established fully segmented human body model. Radiation intensity outside the body was found to have a Gaussian-form relationship with frequency. Maximum radiation occurs between 450 and 900 MHz. The gut region was found generally to inhibit vertically polarized electric fields more than horizontally polarized fields
