The Rising Age Gap in Economic Well-Being

    Get PDF
Compares changes in median net worth of households between 1984 and 2009 by age of head of household. Examines contributing factors, including the housing market bubble, the 2007-09 recession's effect on employment, and longer-term demographic trends

[Excerpt] This report, which includes annual data from 1984 through 2009, provides a comprehensive overview of women’s economic progress over the last twenty-five years and highlights the additional work left to be done. The role of women in the American economy is of indisputable importance. The future of the American economy depends on women’s work, both inside and outside the home

Australasian money demand stability:Application of structural break tests

    Get PDF
Estimates of the demand for money provide important foundations for monetary policy setting but if the estimation technique does not explicitly account for structural changes then such estimates will be biased. This paper presents an investigation into the level and stability of money demand (M1) for Australia and New Zealand over the 1960-2009 period and demonstrates that both countries experienced regime shifts; Australia also experienced an intercept shift. Application of four time series methods provide consistent results with 1984 and 1998 break dates. CUSUM and CUSUMSQ stability tests reveal that M1 demand functions were unstable over the 1984 to 1998 period for both countries although tests for stability are not rejected thereafter.Money demand; Cointegration; Structural breaks; Australia; New Zealand

The Presence and Image of the Translator in Narrative Discourse: towards a Definition of the Translator's Ethos

    Get PDF
This paper aims at exploring the configuration of the discursive image or ethos attached to the enunciative subject assuming the responsibility for the enunciation of translated narrative (Ducrot 1984; Amossy 1999, 2009, 2012). Our concern will be the study of the modeling of ethos affecting the Translator, understood here not as an empirical subject but as a discursive one. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is two-fold. On a theoretical and methodological level, this paper intends to elaborate the category of Translator's ethos by articulating contributions from two distinct but related areas, translation studies (Schiavi 1996; Hermans 2010 [1996]) and discourse studies (Ducrot 1984; Amossy 1999, 2009, 2012), in an attempt to further explore an already posed question in the field of translation studies: "Exactly whose voice comes to us when we read translated discourse?" (Hermans 2010 [1996]: 197). On the analytical level, this interdisciplinary approach will be exemplified by the analysis of Chicana novel Caramelo or Puro Cuento by Sandra Cisneros (2002a) and its corresponding translation into Spanish carried out by Liliana Valenzuela (Cisneros 2002b). In examining the construction of ethos, our approach will combine textual, contextual and paratextual analyses of the texts.Fil: Spoturno, Maria Laura. Job Loss in the Great Recession: Historical Perspective from the Displaced Workers Survey, 1984-2010

    Get PDF
The Great Recession from December 2007 to June 2009 is associated with a dramatic weakening of the labor market from which the labor market is now only slowly recovering. The unemployment rate remains stubbornly high and durations of unemployment are unprecedentedly long. I use data from the Displaced Workers Survey (DWS) from 1984-2010 to investigate the incidence and consequences of job loss from 1981-2009. In particular, the January 2010 DWS, which captures job loss during the 2007-2009 period, provides a window through which to examine the experience of job losers in the Great Recession and to compare their experience to that of earlier job losers. These data show a record high rate of job loss, with almost one in six workers reporting having lost a job in the 2007-2009 period. The consequences of job loss are also very serious during this period with very low rates of reemployment, difficulty finding full-time employment, and substantial earnings losses.displacement, job loss, unemployment

First Collection Records of \u3ci\u3eHippodamia Variegata\u3c/i\u3e (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in Minnesota Corn and Soybean

The coccinellid Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is a relatively recent addition to the North American coccinellid fauna. This species was first reported in 1984 near Montreal, Quebec (Gordon 1987). Since then, its range has expanded beyond northeastern North America with the newest records in the midwestern United States, including Michigan (Gardiner and Parson 2005), Ohio (Pavuk et al. 2007), Wisconsin (Williams and Young 2009), and most recently South Dakota (Hesler and Lundgren 2011). Here we provide the first records of H. variegata in Minnesota. In addition, our records further define the movement pattern of this beetle across the Midwest by documenting its presence in the gap between Wisconsin and South Dakota

Notions of T- and R-connectivity of seismic events have been introduced and on their base formalized criterion of earthquakes neighborhood has been proposed. Methodic problems of discrimination of interconnected events with the help of graphs theory have been considered. A set of test calculations for the earthquakes of the central part of the Crimean-Black Sea region have been conducted. It has been demonstrated that in the matrix of orgraph contiguity all the significant activation periods al of seismic activity occurred in 1984, 1990, 1998 and 2009 are reflected. For the Crimean earthquakes of 1984 and 1998 the chains of interconnected events have been distinguished about two years long, which confirm the migration of low rank events to the site of future strong one.
