    On velocity structure functions and the spherical vortex model for isotropic turbulence

    We investigate a stochastic model for homogeneous, isotropic turbulence based on Hill's spherical vortex. This is an extension of the method of Synge and Lin [Trans. R. Soc. Can. 37, 45 (1943)], to the calculation of higher even-order velocity structure functions. Isotropic turbulence is represented by a homogeneous distribution of eddies, each modeled by a spherical vortex. The cascade process of eddy breakdown is incorporated into the statistical model through an average over an assumed log-normal distribution of vortex radii. We calculate the statistical properties of the model, in particular order-n velocity structure functions defined by rank-n tensors for the ensemble average of a set of incremental differences in velocity components. We define Di[centered ellipsis]s = , where denotes the ensemble average. Specifically Dij, Dijkl, and the longitudinal component of Dijklmn are calculated directly from the spherical vortex ensemble. Matching the longitudinal components of Dij and Dijkl with experimental results fixes two independent model parameters.     5-HT2A Receptors Modulate Dopamine D2-mediated Maternal Effects

    Serotonin 5-HT2A receptors are expressed throughout the mesolimbic and mesocortical dopamine pathways, and manipulation of this receptor system has a profound impact on dopamine functions and dopamine-mediated behaviors. It is highly likely that 5-HT2A receptors may also modulate the D2-mediated maternal effects. The present study investigated this issue and also explored the possible behavioral mechanisms. We tested the effects of two D2 drugs (an agonist quinpirole: 0.5, 1.0 mg/kg, and a potent D2 antagonist haloperidol: 0.05, 0.10 mg/kg, sc) and their combinations with two 5-HT2A drugs (a selective 5-HT2A agonist TCB-2: 2.5 mg/kg, and 5-HT2A antagonist MDL100907, 1.0 mg/kg, sc) on maternal behavior in Sprague-Dawley postpartum females. Individually, TCB-2 (2.5 mg/kg, sc) and quinpirole (0.5 and 1.0 mg/kg, sc) reduced pup preference and disrupted home-cage maternal behavior. In contrast, haloperidol (0.10 mg/kg, sc) only disrupted home-cage maternal behavior, but did not suppress pup preference. MDL100907 (1.0 mg/kg, sc) by itself had no effect on either pup preference or maternal behavior. When administered in combination, pretreatment of TCB-2 did not alter quinpirole’s disruption of pup preference and home-cage maternal behavior (possibly due to the floor effect), however, it did enhance haloperidol’s disruption of pup retrieval in the home cage. MDL100907 had no effect both quinpirole’s and haloperidol’s disruption of pup preference and home-cage maternal behavior. Interestingly, haloperidol attenuated TCB-2’s disruptive effect on pup preference. These findings suggest that activation of 5-HT2A receptors tends to enhance D2-mediated maternal disruption, whereas blockade of 5-HT2A receptors is less effective. They also suggest that 5-HT2A receptors may have a direct effect on maternal behavior independent of their interaction with D2 receptors. The possible behavioral and neural mechanisms by which 5-HT2A-and D2-mediated maternal effects and their interaction are discussed

    Optically Stimulated Luminescence Dating Supports Central Arctic Ocean CM-scale Sedimentation Rates

    This paper presents new results from Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating on a sediment core raised from the crest of the Lomonosov Ridge in the central Arctic Ocean. There has been much debate about dating sediment cores from the central Arctic Ocean and by using an independent absolute dating technique we aim to test whether or not relatively fast, cm-scale/ka, sedimentation rates were typical of Arctic’s Pleistocene depositional mode. On the basis of mainly paleomagnetic reversal stratigraphy, many previous studies suggest mm-scale/ka sedimentation rates. A common feature in these studies is that the first down core paleomagnetic negative inclination is consistently interpreted as the Brunhes/Matuyama boundary at about 780 ka. Our OSL dating results indicate that this assumption is not generally valid, and that the first encountered negative inclination represents younger age excursions within the Brunhes Chron, implying reinterpretation of many published core studies where paleoenvironmental reconstructions have been made for the central Arctic Ocean. Our dating results furthermore corroborates a correlation of the uppermost 2–3 m of the Lomonosov Ridge cores to a well-dated core located off the Barents-Kara Sea margin that in turn is correlated to cores in the Fram Strait. Valuable information on the paleoceanographical evolution in the Arctic Ocean from MIS 6 to the Holocene is given through this correlation of records from the central Arctic Ocean to records off the Eurasian continental margin

    The Aphids (Homoptera: Aphididae) Associated With Bell Peppers and Surrounding Vegetation in Southern Illinois

    Outbreaks of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) disease, caused by an aphid- transmitted pathogen, greatly reduced yields of bell pepper in southern Illinois in the mid-1990s. To provide the basis for further studies of the roles of individual apbid species in virus transmission, we surveyed aphid flights in and around pepper fields in 1996 and 1997 by using suction traps, interception nets, landing traps, sweep nets, and hand-picking. We collected 78 species of aphids, 15 of which have been reported to transmit CMV to peppers. The most abundant species taken from suction traps and interception nets in combination were Lipaphis erysimi, Rhopalosiphum padi, Rhopalosiphum maidis, Schizaphis graminum, and Aphis craccivora. All of these species are known to transmit CMV to peppers, but the phenology of R. maidis in Illinois suggests it is not the vector that brings CMV to pepper fields to initiate disease outbreaks. Brachycaudus helichrysi was relatively abundant in 1996 in May and June when a CMV outbreak may have been initiated; it was absent in 1997, and CMV infections were rare that season. Two species, Carolinaia carolinensis and Myzus hemerocallis were recorded for the first time in Illinois
