New result on the measurement of the direct photon emission in K+ --> pi^+ pi^0 gamma decay

We present a new result on the K^+ --> pi^+ pi^0 gamma decay measurement using stopped kaons. The best fit to the decay spectrum comprised of 10k events gives a branching ratio for the direct photon emission of [3.8+-0.8(stat)+-0.7(syst)] times 10^{-6} in the pi^+ kinetic energy region of 55 to 90 MeV. This result has been obtained with the assumption that there is no component due to interference with the inner bremsstrahlung.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables (Fig.1 which had problems with uploading first time is replaced. X-ray micro-computed tomography for heritage building materials

    Get PDF
X-ray micro-computed tomography can provide information about the composition and internal structure of materials commonly found in heritage buildings such as natural stone, mortar, brick, concrete and wood. As it is a non-destructive technique, samples can be scanned multiple times, which makes it particularly suitable for studying weathering processes and the efficacy of treatment methods

A STUDY ON EFFICACY OF AUTOLOGOUS PLATELET RICH PLASMA IN MYRINGOPLASTY

    Get PDF
Objective: To study the efficacy and advantage in using autologus platelet rich plasma during myringoplasty in closure of tympanic membrane perforation   preventing the graft displacement, promoting quicker healing & improving overall outcome. Methods : Platelet rich plasma(PRP) is an autologus platelet rich concentrate prepared from patients own blood  with growth factors up to 8 times that of normal serum and its efficacy when used during myringoplasty is studied.50 patients with chronic otitis media inactive mucosal disease were randomly chosen and 25 of them was the study group and other 25 were the control group. Both group patients underwent myringoplasty and PRP was used in the study group and the results were evaluated. Results: In our study among 25 cases that underwent myringoplasty with use of platelet rich fibrin, 24 had complete tympanic membrane closure and only one failure has been noticed. In controls 5 out of 25 cases had failure. The graft take up rate in our study is comparable with the reference studies. Use of PRP accelerates graft uptake. Conclusion: Platelet rich plasma is a cheap and cost effective platelet concentrate with enriched growth factors. It accelerates the tympanic membrane closure following myringoplasty.

Structural behaviour of circular concrete filled steel tube column fill with selfcompacting concrete incorporating coal bottom ash as fine aggregate replacement

    Get PDF
Lack of compaction may affect the interaction between the steel tube and the concrete, hence influence the behaviour of CFST column. Employing selfcompacting concrete (SCC) in CFST column as an infill concrete remove the necessity for compaction. However, higher volume of fine aggregate required in SCC makes SCC less preferable. The objective of this research was to investigate the behaviour of circular CFST column filled with SCC incorporating coal bottom ash (CBA) as fine aggregate replacement. In this research work, sand was replaced with CBA at 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30% of replacement levels. Tests for compressive strength, split tensile strength, flexural strength, and water absorption were performed on specimens at 7 and 28 days curing age. The testing results show that 15% of CBA was the optimum percentage suitable used in SCC. In studying the behaviour of CFST columns, 18 CFST column specimens were tested to fail under the axial compression loading. From the experimental results, it can be concluded that the utilisation of SCC with CBA in the CFST column able to improve the behaviour of CFST column. From compression testing results, the strength of CFST column filled with SCC with CBA increased about 45-50%. The experimental results were also compared with the design standard of Eurocode 4 (EC4). From the comparison, the EC4 conservatively predicts the strength of the column specimens. For instance, EC4 conservatively predicted the column strength in series I by about 21-31%. The finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted on the long column to verify the experimental results and from the FEA result, the predicted value for specimens with 140 mm diameter is 0.005% closer to the experimental results. These discoveries are significant as they showed that the utilization of CBA in SCC as an infill in CFST column able to provide the same strength as CFST with normal SCC. Besides, the use of CBA as partially replacement to the sand will help in more sustainable SCC production by lowering energy and raw material consumption

Assessing the Role of Foreign Direct Investment in China’s Economic Development: Macro Indicators and Insights from Sectoral-Regional Analyses

    Get PDF
The objective of this paper is to assess the role of FDI in China’s economic development with reference to the broader literature on FDI and late development. Three main findings come out from the analyses in the paper. First, it is found that FDI tends to promote the improvement in allocative efficiency, while having a negative impact on productive efficiency. Second, insofar as FDI does promote overall productivity growth, this tends to be a matter of cumulative causation rather than one of single-direction causation. Third, in the context of a comparative analysis of two distinctive regional models, it is found that the economic impact of FDI tends to be more favourable in the inward-looking, capital-deepening pattern of development (the ‘Shanghai model’) than that in the export-oriented, labour-intensive pattern (the ‘Guangdong model’). Further analyses, however, suggest that the ‘Shanghai model’ has its intrinsic problems of sustainability. The scope for applying it to China as a whole is thus judged to be limited

No drain, autologous transfusion drain or suction drain? A randomised prospective study in total hip replacement surgery of 168 patients

    Get PDF
We performed a prospective, randomised controlled trial to assess the differences in the use of a conventional suction drain, an Autologous Blood Transfusion (ABT) drain and no drain, in 168 patients. There was no significant difference between the drainage from ABT drains ( mean : 345 ml) and the suction drain (314 ml). Forty percent of patients receiving a suction drain had a haemoglobin level less than 10 g/dL at 24 hours, compared to 35% with no drain and 28% with an ABT drain. Patients that had no drains had wounds that were dry significantly sooner, mean 3.0 days compared to a mean of 3.9 days with an ABT drain and a mean of 4 days with a suction drain. Patients that did not have a drain inserted stayed in hospital a significantly shorter period of time, compared with drains. We feel the benefits of quicker drying wounds, shorter hospital stays and the economic savings justify the conclusion that no drain is required after hip replacement

    Introducing the Western Wedge

The article looks at the rationale for and potential of planning at the sub-regional scale, particularly in terms of labour and housing markets. This is illustrated by the case of the 'Western Wedge', stretching from central London westwards across the Greater London boundary into the South East region towards Oxford, Basingstoke and Newbury
