Evaluation Report: 2010-2015 Social Development Strategy

In 2010, Centraide of Greater Montreal adopted a strategy to fight poverty and social exclusion that was firmly grounded in a territorial approach.The hypothesis: Centraide could generate better outcomes by prioritizing investment targets and applying strategic and proactive investment approaches across a neighbourhood instead of considering agencies in isolation.Five years later, an evaluation was conducted in six communities to observe changes and draw lessons from this approach.Instead of just increasing resources so that agencies can do more, the territorial approach helped Centraide create a plan for each neighbourhood and use available vectors to support the desired improvements. These vectors include: * Support for solid and dynamic agencies that provide leadership in their communities. * Support for multi-network and intersectoral coordination so that communities can implement solutions that have the greatest chance of reducing and mitigating the impact of poverty and social exclusion. * Reinforcement of agency skills and leadership. * Ongoing relationships between organizations, mobilization initiatives and Centraid

Australian public library alliance achievements 2010-2015

Overview: The ALIA Australian Public Library Alliance (APLA) is the peak body for public libraries in Australia. Our committee comprises the chair of every state-based public library association, a senior representative from the ACT, Northern Territory and Tasmanian library services, and expert members. We represent 94% of all the 1500 public libraries across Australia through membership subscription. APLA (or, as it was previously known, the ALIA Public Libraries Advisory Committee) was formed following a highly successful ALIA Public Libraries Summit in July 2009. At the summit, libraries leaders called for, ‘Australia’s public libraries, united behind common goals and ambitions, sharing best practice, contributing to strong communities, valued by people and government, continuing to provide universal free access to information, knowledge and ideas, and confirming the importance of their role for future generations.’ A national alliance, supported by every state and territory, and Public Libraries Australia, was the primary outcome of the summit and was ratified by the signing of a Memorandum of Collaboration in July 2010

Research options for controlling Zoonotic disease in India, 2010-2015

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic infections pose a significant public health challenge for low- and middle-income countries and have traditionally been a neglected area of research. The Roadmap to Combat Zoonoses in India (RCZI) initiative conducted an exercise to systematically identify and prioritize research options needed to control zoonoses in India. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Priority setting methods developed by the Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative were adapted for the diversity of sectors, disciplines, diseases and populations relevant for zoonoses in India. A multidisciplinary group of experts identified priority zoonotic diseases and knowledge gaps and proposed research options to address key knowledge gaps within the next five years. Each option was scored using predefined criteria by another group of experts. The scores were weighted using relative ranks among the criteria based upon the feedback of a larger reference group. We categorized each research option by type of research, disease targeted, factorials, and level of collaboration required. We analysed the research options by tabulating them along these categories. Seventeen experts generated four universal research themes and 103 specific research options, the majority of which required a high to medium level of collaboration across sectors. Research options designated as pertaining to 'social, political and economic' factorials predominated and scored higher than options focussing on ecological, genetic and biological, or environmental factors. Research options related to 'health policy and systems' scored highest while those related to 'research for development of new interventions' scored the lowest. CONCLUSIONS: We methodically identified research themes and specific research options incorporating perspectives of a diverse group of stakeholders. These outputs reflect the diverse nature of challenges posed by zoonoses and should be acceptable across diseases, disciplines, and sectors. The identified research options capture the need for 'actionable research' for advancing the prevention and control of zoonoses in India

Seasonality of childhood tuberculosis cases in Kampala, Uganda, 2010-2015.

BackgroundSeasonality in tuberculosis (TB) has been described, especially in children. However, few studies have assessed seasonality of TB in the equatorial region, and none in children.ObjectivesTo assess for seasonality of childhood TB cases in Kampala, Uganda, and determine the role of temperature, rainfall patterns, and influenza cases on TB diagnoses.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed demographic and clinical data of children (under 15 years) diagnosed with TB at a pediatric TB clinic in Kampala, Uganda from 2010 to 2015. We performed decomposition analysis of the monthly case time series to assess seasonality. We compared monthly mean plots and performed Poisson regression to assess any association between TB diagnoses and temperature, rainfall, and influenza.ResultsOf the 713 childhood TB cases diagnosed at the clinic, 609 (85%) were clinically diagnosed and 492 (69%) were pulmonary cases. There were minimal monthly variations in TB cases, with a trough in December and peaks in July and October, but there was no significant seasonality. Temperature variations did not show a clear pattern with TB diagnoses. Rainfall alternated with TB diagnoses in the first half of the year, but then overlapped in the second half and was significantly associated with TB diagnoses. Influenza cases were significantly related to TB diagnoses with (β = 0.05, 95% CI 0.01 to 0.09, p = 0.01) or without (β = 0.06, 95% CI 0.01 to 0.1, p = 0.01) rainfall, and had particular overlap with pulmonary TB cases.ConclusionsSeasonal variations in childhood TB diagnoses were non-significant. Temperature did not have a clear pattern with TB diagnoses, but rainfall and influenza cases correlated with the primarily clinically diagnosed childhood TB cases

Population Estimates, 2010-2015, DVRPC's 28-County Extended Data Services Area

As the Greater Philadelphia region's metropolitan planning organization (MPO), the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) provides technical assistance and services to its member state, county, and local governments; the private sector; and the public. Delaware Valley Data is our periodic series of free data bulletins, data snapshots, and analytical reports. Data Bulletin #097 provides county- and subcounty-level population estimates as of July 1, 2015, for the 28 counties located within DVRPC's extended data services area, released by the U.S Census Bureau in May 2016. The Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program (PEP) produces July 1st estimates for the years following the last published decennial census and, in most cases, simultaneously revises annual estimates released in previous years. Existing data series such as births, deaths, federal tax returns, Medicare enrollment, and immigration are used to update the base counts from the decennial census. PEP estimates are used in federal funding allocations, in setting the levels of national surveys, and for monitoring recent demographic changes
