    This article describes an unconference session at the most recent Association of Christian Librarians Annual Conference 2017. The session attendees worked together to produce sample lesson plans, using the “backwards design planning structure” introduced by Wiggins & McTighe in Understanding by Design. Conference attendees produced information literacy lesson plans to introduce freshman college students to five of the ACRL Framework concept

    In surveys conducted during 1988-95, 164 individuals of the frosted elfin (Incisalia irus) were found, 139 of them during formal transects that totaled 92.9 hr and 179.4 km of survey effort during the frosted elfin flight period. Individuals were observed between 10 May and 14 June, with maximum . t spans in a single year of 27-31 days. Peak flight occurred just before or e beginning of peak flowering of the larval host, wild lupine (Lupinus perennis), and the first spring adults of Karner blue (Lycaeides melissa samuelis), also monophagous as larvae on wild lupine. Fourteen individuals exhibited oviposition behavior on young stalks of green lupine flower buds. 94% of individuals occurred in savannas, nearly evenly split between open (10-24% canopy) and closed (25-49% canopy) ones. Relative lupine abundance at both the microsite and landscape scales appeared more important as a habitat factor than actual size of the particular lupine patch occupied. Both long-term lack of site management and too frequent/intense management (forestry, rotational fire) appeared unfavorable. Recreational trailsides, areas burned by wildfire \u3e4 years ago, and rights-of-way mowed annually or less often were favorable habitat. All frosted elfin sites also supported Karner blues, but within these sites, correlation of frosted elfin abundance with that of Karner blues was rather weak, indicating a fair degree of niche segregation between these two species

    Thermodynamics and kinetics of the Mg65Cu25Y10 bulk metallic glass forming liquid

    The thermodynamics and kinetics of the bulk metallic glass forming Mg65Cu25Y10 liquid were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and three-point beam bending. The experiments lead to the determination of the thermodynamic functions as well as the viscosity of the supercooled liquid. The viscosity shows a temperature dependence, which is consistent with that of a strong glass similar to Zr–Ti–Cu–Ni–Be bulk metallic glasses or sodium silicate glasses. This contrasts with more fragile conventional metallic glass formers or pure metals. The relatively weak temperature dependence of the thermodynamic functions of the supercooled liquid is related to these sluggish kinetics in the supercooled liquid. Entropy, viscosity, and kinetic glass transition are compared in the frameworks of the fragility concept and the Adam–Gibbs theory.     The Paradoxes of Cultural Property

    Many current cultural disputes sound in the legal language and logic of discrimination or hate speech. The focus of this essay is on the claims made explicitly or implicitly on the basis of cultural property. The problem with using ideas of cultural property to resolve cultural disputes is that cultural property encourages an anemic theory of culture so that it can make sense as a form of property. Cultural property is a paradox because it places special value and legal protection on cultural products and artifacts but does so based on a sanitized and domesticated view of cultural production and identity. Within the logic of cultural property, each group possesses and controls--or ought to control--its own culture. This view of cultural property suggests a preservationist stance toward culture. This essay argues against both of these assumptions and for a view of culture that takes account of its dynamisms, appropriations, hybridizations, and contaminations. As a corrective to the paradoxes of cultural property, this essay offers a counternarrative of cultural fusion and hybridity. These themes are illustrated with an extended example of the regulation of Native American mascots generally and the invention of one such mascot--Chief Illiniwek--specifically

    Ceramics at Three Ancestral Caddo Sites in the Upper Neches River Basin, Smith County, Texas

    The upper Neches River Basin in the Pineywoods and Post Oak Savannah of East Texas is one part of the southern Caddo area where populations of ancestral Caddo groups were notably higher during the Late Caddo period, ca. A.D. 1400-1680, than at other times over their ca. 1000 year settlement of the region. The Frankston phase is comprised of farmsteads, hamlets, and small villages in the Neches and Angelina river basins in East Texas. Other Frankston phase sites are represented by small residential settlements in dispersed agricultural communities, with small family and/or community cemeteries not used for long periods of time, such as at the Lang Pasture site (41AN38). Concentrations of Frankston phase sites in the upper Neches River basin seem to comprise base settlement clusters with middens, burials, and house structures, likely representing permanent settlements on streamside flats with fertile soils in the uplands. Other site types include scattered sherds, which perhaps are gathering stations in which pitted stones are found with a few sherds, and small campsites.     Deployment and performance evaluation of a SNAP-based resource broker on the White Rose grid

    Resource brokering is an essential component in building effective Grid systems. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the performance of a SNAP (Service Negotiation and Acquisition Protocol) based resource broker on a large distributed Grid infrastructure, the White Rose Grid. The broker uses a three-phase commit protocol to reserve resources on demand, as the traditional advance reservation facilities cannot cater for such needs due to the prior time that it requires to schedule reservations. Experiments are designed and carried out on the White Rose Grid. The experimental results show that the inclusion of the three-phase commit protocol provides a performance enhancement on a large distributed Grid Infrastructure, in terms of the time taken from submission of user requirements until a job begins execution. The results support those previously obtained through the use of mathematical modelling and simulation. The broker is a viable contender for use in future Grid resource brokering implementations
