    Computational Intelligence for the Micro Learning

    The developments of the Web technology and the mobile devices have blurred the time and space boundaries of people’s daily activities, which enable people to work, entertain, and learn through the mobile device at almost anytime and anywhere. Together with the life-long learning requirement, such technology developments give birth to a new learning style, micro learning. Micro learning aims to effectively utilise learners’ fragmented spare time and carry out personalised learning activities. However, the massive volume of users and the online learning resources force the micro learning system deployed in the context of enormous and ubiquitous data. Hence, manually managing the online resources or user information by traditional methods are no longer feasible. How to utilise computational intelligence based solutions to automatically managing and process different types of massive information is the biggest research challenge for realising the micro learning service. As a result, to facilitate the micro learning service in the big data era efficiently, we need an intelligent system to manage the online learning resources and carry out different analysis tasks. To this end, an intelligent micro learning system is designed in this thesis. The design of this system is based on the service logic of the micro learning service. The micro learning system consists of three intelligent modules: learning material pre-processing module, learning resource delivery module and the intelligent assistant module. The pre-processing module interprets the content of the raw online learning resources and extracts key information from each resource. The pre-processing step makes the online resources ready to be used by other intelligent components of the system. The learning resources delivery module aims to recommend personalised learning resources to the target user base on his/her implicit and explicit user profiles. The goal of the intelligent assistant module is to provide some evaluation or assessment services (such as student dropout rate prediction and final grade prediction) to the educational resource providers or instructors. The educational resource providers can further refine or modify the learning materials based on these assessment results

    An Intermediate Data-driven Methodology for Scientific Workflow Management System to Support Reusability

    Automatic processing of different logical sub-tasks by a set of rules is a workflow. A workflow management system (WfMS) is a system that helps us accomplish a complex scientific task through making a sequential arrangement of sub-tasks available as tools. Workflows are formed with modules from various domains in a WfMS, and many collaborators of the domains are involved in the workflow design process. Workflow Management Systems (WfMSs) have been gained popularity in recent years for managing various tools in a system and ensuring dependencies while building a sequence of executions for scientific analyses. As a result of heterogeneous tools involvement and collaboration requirement, Collaborative Scientific Workflow Management Systems (CSWfMS) have gained significant interest in the scientific analysis community. In such systems, big data explosion issues exist with massive velocity and variety characteristics for the heterogeneous large amount of data from different domains. Therefore a large amount of heterogeneous data need to be managed in a Scientific Workflow Management System (SWfMS) with a proper decision mechanism. Although a number of studies addressed the cost management of data, none of the existing studies are related to real- time decision mechanism or reusability mechanism. Besides, frequent execution of workflows in a SWfMS generates a massive amount of data and characteristics of such data are always incremental. Input data or module outcomes of a workflow in a SWfMS are usually large in size. Processing of such data-intensive workflows is usually time-consuming where modules are computationally expensive for their respective inputs. Besides, lack of data reusability, limitation of error recovery, inefficient workflow processing, inefficient storing of derived data, lacking in metadata association and lacking in validation of the effectiveness of a technique of existing systems need to be addressed in a SWfMS for efficient workflow building by maintaining the big data explosion. To address the issues, in this thesis first we propose an intermediate data management scheme for a SWfMS. In our second attempt, we explored the possibilities and introduced an automatic recommendation technique for a SWfMS from real-world workflow data (i.e Galaxy [1] workflows) where our investigations show that the proposed technique can facilitate 51% of workflow building in a SWfMS by reusing intermediate data of previous workflows and can reduce 74% execution time of workflow buildings in a SWfMS. Later we propose an adaptive version of our technique by considering the states of tools in a SWfMS, which shows around 40% reusability for workflows. Consequently, in our fourth study, We have done several experiments for analyzing the performance and exploring the effectiveness of the technique in a SWfMS for various environments. The technique is introduced to emphasize on storing cost reduction, increase data reusability, and faster workflow execution, to the best of our knowledge, which is the first of its kind. Detail architecture and evaluation of the technique are presented in this thesis. We believe our findings and developed system will contribute significantly to the research domain of SWfMSs

    Machine Learning Models for Context-Aware Recommender Systems

    The mass adoption of the internet has resulted in the exponential growth of products and services on the world wide web. An individual consumer, faced with this data deluge, is expected to make reasonable choices saving time and money. Organizations are facing increased competition, and they are looking for innovative ways to increase revenue and customer loyalty. A business wants to target the right product or service to an individual consumer, and this drives personalized recommendation. Recommender systems, designed to provide personalized recommendations, initially focused only on the user-item interaction. However, these systems evolved to provide a context-aware recommendations. Context-aware recommender systems utilize additional context, such as genre for movie recommendation, while recommending items to users. Latent factor methods have been a popular choice for recommender systems. With the resurgence of neural networks, there has also been a trend towards applying deep learning methods to recommender systems. This study proposes a novel contextual latent factor model that is capable of utilizing the context from a dual-perspective of both users and items. The proposed model, known as the Group-Aware Latent Factor Model (GLFM), is applied to the event recommendation task. The GLFM model is extensible, and it allows other contextual attributes to be easily be incorporated into the model. While latent-factor models have been extremely popular for recommender systems, they are unable to model the complex non-linear user-item relationships. This has resulted in the interest in applying deep learning methods to recommender systems. This study also proposes another novel method based on the denoising autoencoder architecture, which is referred to as the Attentive Contextual Denoising Autoencoder (ACDA). The ACDA model augments the basic denoising autoencoder with a context-driven attention mechanism to provide personalized recommendation. The ACDA model is applied to the event and movie recommendation tasks. The effectiveness of the proposed models is demonstrated against real-world datasets from Meetup and Movielens, and the results are compared against the current state-of-the-art baseline methods

    A systematic review on food recommender systems

    The Internet has revolutionised the way information is retrieved, and the increase in the number of users has resulted in a surge in the volume and heterogeneity of available data. Recommender systems have become popular tools to help users retrieve relevant information quickly. Food Recommender Systems (FRS), in particular, have proven useful in overcoming the overload of information present in the food domain. However, the recommendation of food is a complex domain with specific characteristics causing many challenges. Additionally, very few systematic literature reviews have been conducted in the domain on FRS. This paper presents a systematic literature review that summarises the current state-of-the-art in FRS. Our systematic review examines the different methods and algorithms used for recommendation, the data and how it is processed, and evaluation methods. It also presents the advantages and disadvantages of FRS. To achieve this, a total of 67 high-quality studies were selected from a pool of 2,738 studies using strict quality criteria. The review reveals that the domain of food recommendation is very diverse, and most FRS are built using content-based filtering and ML approaches to provide non-personalised recommendations. The review provides valuable information to the research field, helping researchers in the domain to select a strategy to develop FRS. This review can help improve the efficiency of development, thus closing the gap between the development of FRS and other recommender systems.</p
