Abstract

The murder of Teresa Zañartu by her ex-husband in 1905 caused a scandal that called into question the “moral standing” of the elite, to which those involved belonged. The need to rebuild its image led the oligarchy to use Zañartu's figure politically and to represent itself as an emotional community transmuted into a compact and grieving body, which contrasted with the victim's silence.El asesinato de Teresa Zañartu por su exesposo en 1905 generó un escándalo que puso en tela de juicio la “altura moral” de la elite, a la que pertenecían los involucrados.
