Reversing ageism and extending working lives: the Finland model

Abstract

This article examines Finland’s transformation since the mid-1990s, from a nation of early retirees to one that is embracing longer working lives. Over the past 30 years, Finland has addressed ageism in the labor market and social security, helping to reshape societal attitudes toward older workers. This shift required bold reforms and a cultural change among workers, employers, and society. We review key national initiatives and policy reforms since the 1990s that have extended careers and strengthened work opportunities for older employees
