Abstract
Eurovision began as a singing competition whose goal was to connect and unite the countries participating in it. As such, the competition is intended to be apolitical. However, in the last ten years, we have seen a significant shift in the perception of what counts as a song in the spirit of Eurovision, and how important the messages of the songs are becoming. This difference became evident in the big difference in the evaluation of the jury and the audience.
This thesis studies the ways in which Eurovision promotes the contestant countries, in which way the political and social context affects this and in which way Eurovision affects them. The goal of the research is to establish to what extent young people view Eurovision through the prism of politics, and entertainment and how much it influences their vote.
The purpose of this thesis is to see how Eurovision as a competition has developed until today, and what political and social factors have influenced it, and the aim of the research is to see what young people's view of Eurovision is, what they consider its most important aspect; entertainment, politics or something else entirely. Research through an online questionnaire showed that young people really give politics more importance than older generations, but that they primarily view Eurovision as an entertaining event with a predominantly positive connotation. Considering the lack of online surveys on the topic od Eurovision, it would be benefical if similar surveys were performed on an even larger sample in order to study more closely the difference in the gender orientation of respondents who had participated in the survey online as compared to those from live events
