Generalized Anxiety Disorder as Accentuated in Ann Beattie’s Shifting
Generalized anxiety disorder is an anxiety disorder commonly experienced in excessive worry by some people with trauma. In the short story entitled Shifting written by Ann Beattie, Natalie is worried about her marriage because Natalie thinks that Larry's mother will not approve of their marriage, this is because Natalie is rarely accompanying Larry. Then, how are generalized anxiety disorders accentuated in Ann Beattie’s Shifting? In analysis, the main character in this story is over-worrying that makes herself being different in the view of the others. The language that she knows has been over consumed that she has been swallowed by the language itself. In conclusion, the short story indicates how any disorder may come from any small worry. If the worrying is not finished, it could be piled up and be shaped into further anxiety that disturbs life of being individuals and parts of societies
Analisis Kemampuan Berpikir Kritis pada Buku Bahasa Indonesia Kelas X Sekolah Penggerak dan SMK Pusat Keunggulan
Critical thinking has become a discussion in education as a skill that must be possessed by students so that learning activities properly direct assignment activities and questions that lead to critical thinking skills. Then in this study the aim was to describe the results of the analysis and evaluation of critical thinking in class X Indonesian books used in Sekolah Penggerak dan SMK Pusat Keunggulan. The research method used was content analysis supported by statistic descriptions. The instrument used is a critical thinking activity framework in language learning developed by Ilyas. Based on the results of the analysis, out of 220 assignment activities and questions, there were 137 (62.27%) activities that lead to critical thinking skills, consisting of requests (13.64%); exploring assumptions (14.09%); exploring reasons and proof (13.64%); exploring point of view or perspective (5.45%); exploring impacts, consequences, and alternatives (5.91%); formulate questions (0.91%); predict (0.91%); express agreement and disagreement (3.18%); and summarizing and concluding (4.55%). Based on the proportion of instructions or assignments, this Indonesian language book is sufficient to contain instructions for improving critical thinking skills. However, it takes the teacher's ability to direct learning so that the goal of increasing critical thinking can be developed
Variasi Tuturan Basa Walikan dalam Sosial Media: Studi Kasus Komunitas Pemuda-Pemudi di Kota Malang
The use of the walikan language as an expression of pride in identity in the Malang youth community has different variations depending on the speakers. The unique variations of the walikan bases can arise due to regional and gender differences between men and women. This study aims to examine how the unique variations of basa walikan can occur based on differences in social strata and gender using a socio-dialectological approach. Through a socio-dialectological approach, it can be known about the variations in the language used by the Malang youth community in using digital tools. This research uses a descriptive-qualitative approach. The data collection technique uses the listening and taking notes technique which in this case is represented through listening activities and being directly involved in communication using the Walikan language through social media applications, namely Instagram. Another technique used to further deepen the analysis is the interview technique. In addition, the equating comparison technique and the differential comparison technique were also used to analyze the data that had been collected. The results of this study indicate that there is a unique variation of the walikan base used by Malang youth, namely, the walikan base variation in the lexicon order, speech acts, and semantics
The Impact of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning on Reading Comprehension in Senior High School Level: A Systematic Literature Review
The implementation of MALL in the EFL classroom requires careful consideration, especially within Indonesian high school context. However, the impact of MALL on student’s reading comprehension remains uncertain. This systematic review study focuses on reviewing the previous studies that used MALL on student’s reading comprehension in Indonesia especially, at senior high school level. Then, this study investigates the impact of using MALL on students’ reading comprehension and finds out the types of MALL used in teaching reading comprehension in the High School level. This study uses PRISMA guidelines for searching the results. The total number of articles is eight articles from the year of 2019-2023. Then, it found that the use of MALL in the EFL classroom gives a significant effect on the student’s reading comprehension performances and the type of platforms integrated with MALL namely, Padlet and Google Classroom are for online discussion. Quizizz is for assessment and, Nearpod is for making content of learning. The English teachers can use this study as the reference in choosing types of MALL used in the classroom. Further research is needed to improve the applicability and validity of the study, including the consideration of different educational levels and contextual issues
Adaptation of Literary Works by German Language Education Students through Instagram Reels for Enhance Literary Understanding
The Growth of digital technology now opens communication means for information distribution; many platforms are used by students to enjoy literary works. Instagram Reels is one of the current learning media, which is often used to get various information. This study describes how the use of Instagram Reels to understand German literature through the adaptation or ecranisation of literary works. The problem, which was explored, is how students can understand the concept of ecranisation, and describe the response to the use of this media. Respondents are students of German Language Education Study Programme, Class of 2021. This research used descriptive qualitative methods and was analysed using Miles Hubermann's Analysis Technique. Data were collected using a questionnaire and data description from video documentation of the results of the ecranisation from the Instagram account @klublesung. The questionnaire results show that most respondents have understood the process of medium adaptation and applied it in making a video interpretation of literary works. Responses to the use of this media show that this platform is eligible for learning, but it should go through some implementation and encourage the video making training before starting to do the interpretation
A Comparison of Robert Entman's Framing of Netanyahu's Arrest News on Aljazeera Online News Media and CNN Arabic
Netanyahu is one of the Israeli Prime Ministers who is in the public spotlight because he is considered a suspect in the extermination of Gazans. Different news framing can affect one's view and understanding of the news. This research aims to find a comparison of Robert Entman's Framing model in the news which consists of four elements namely define the problem, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and treatment recommendations. The object of this research consists of two primary data and secondary data. Primary data consists of two news articles from the AlJazeera website and two from the CNN Arabic website regarding Netanyahu's arrest. While secondary data is in the form of scientific articles and books relevant to this research. This research method is framing analysis using a qualitative approach. The data collection technique uses reading and note-taking techniques. While the data analysis technique uses the Miles and Hubermann model, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results obtained are in the form of a description of Robert Entman's four framing concepts from the four news articles and a comparison of news framing on the AlJazeera and CNN Arabic websites
The Representation of Body Image and Self-Acceptance of The Main Character in 45 Pounds (More or Less) By K.A Barson
This research is an analysis of the representation of body image and self-acceptance issues of the main character in 45 Pounds (More or Less) through the perspective of Hall’s representation theory. By applying Hall's theory of representation to this research, the researcher gains a deeper understanding of how the novel represents and reinforces cultural norms and values related to body image and self-acceptance, and how these representations shape the feelings and emotions of readers related to the discourse of body image and self-acceptance.This study uses a qualitative research method in which the data sources are primary and secondary data. The primary data are in the form of narrations, dialogues and statements in the novel by K.A Barson entitled 45 Pounds (More or Less) as the main focus in this research. The secondary data includes the historical data, psychological research and cultural studies on body image and self-acceptance. This research focuses on the representation of body image and self-acceptance issue and the critical position of the author through the sense or content in 45 Pounds (More or Less). The analysis results shows that these issues were predominantly influenced by the media’s portrayal of unrealistic beauty standards, leading characters to constantly compare themselves and feel dissatisfied. The author prioritized health over vanity and encouraged readers to look beyond societal pressures, promoting a deeper appreciation of one’s body and self-wort
Students’ Reading Proficiency Based on Scholastic Literacy Pro Browser-Based Program
Digital learning has become increasingly important in education, regardless of how much technology is integrated into the classroom, it gives students more power by encouraging them to learn more and broaden their horizons. The goals of this study were to (1) determine the reading proficiency of students in the First Language English (FLE) class at Mutiara Harapan International School, and to (2) identify reading competencies that the students need to improve. According to the findings of this study, the majority of the students achieved Advanced (A) reading proficiency level with a mean of 87.36 percent, they also performed remarkably well in eight out of ten reading comprehension skills with the mean range of 77 to 99 out of a maximum of 100 percent. This research also revealed that the learners possessed two skills that they had not yet mastered, indicating a Basic (C) proficiency level with a mean range of 69 to 71 out of a maximum of 100 percent. In this regard, teachers and other members of the school community should participate in developing intervention programs that can help students improve their performance in these areas
The Powers of Self-Reflection in English Language Learning Using Video Project Based-Learning
Project based-learning (PjBL), focusing on students’ creativities in producing a particular task, has been variously integrated into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction to promote students’ skills. To support PjBL, teachers have integrated the use of technologies in the classroom since technologies enable teachers to modify teaching-learning activities. One of the modes of technology commonly applied is video project-based learning (VPBL) due to its benefits for both teachers and students. Research reveals the benefits of integrating PjBL and VPBL by focusing on the learning outcomes. In addition, self-reflection, as the ability of students to assess themselves regarding how and what they have learned and done in the tasks, might empower students to be better. This study highlights the benefits of self-reflection in English language learning through VPBL. VPBL empowers learners to create videos on topics of interest, using English as the communication medium. This study is a kind of literature research summarizing the findings of the previous studies on the utilization of self-reflection on students’ speaking projects. The study found that VPBL fosters self-reflection among learners, as they must plan, produce, and evaluate their work. Self-reflection is a crucial skill for language learning, as it helps learners to identify their strengths and weaknesses, set goals, and monitor their progress. The powers of self-reflection in English language learning using VPBL indicate that teachers must employ such cases in the classrooms
The Meaning of Symbols in The Peucicap Aneuk Procession in Aceh: A Semiotic Study
The Peucicap Aneuk tradition is part of past culture with historical value. In its implementation there are religious symbols that have their own meaning. The approach used in this research is semiotic theory to read and understand the meaning of the symbols used by the people of Aceh during the implementation of the Peucicap Aneuk procession. with descriptive qualitative research design. primary data of this research comes from field observations of the Peucicap Aneuk procession and secondary data comes from journals, books, and ancient Acehnese manuscripts. This research showed that, in general, the Acehnese people perform the Peucicap Aneuk procession in the morning on the 7th (seventh) day after a mother gives birth to her child. When the peucicap ritual is carried out, there are 17 (seventeen) symbols, namely rice and paddy, sticky rice, Tumpo, On Peusijuek, free-range chicken egg yolk, rice kneaded into porridge, honey, Zam-Zam water, fruits, chicken thighs, chicken liver, turmeric, salt, sugar, coconut, mirror, Quran. In the Peucicap Aneuk procession, this article confirms the expectations of every parent for their children through the representation of cultural symbols. This article shows that there are several relations between the role of these symbols and the spirit of the community to preserve this culture in line with Islamic values
