Yellow fever virus modulates cytokine mRNA expression and inducesactivation of caspase 3/7 in the human hepatocarcinoma cell lineHepG2

    No full text
AbstractYellow fever virus (YFV) penetrates the skin through the bite of a vector mosquito and spreads to various organs, mainly theliver, where it causes lesions and induces necrosis and apoptosis. We evaluated the mRNA expression of various cytokinesand the activation of caspases in HepG2 cells infected with YFV. We observed that interferon-? (IFN-?) expression decreasedand IFN-?, transforming growth factor (TGF)-? IIIR, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-8 expression increased in cells infected withgenotype 1. In contrast, TNF-? expression increased in cells infected with genotype 2 but not with genotype 1. This providesinsights into the role of cytokine regulation in yellow fever

First report of a novel alphapartitivirus in the basidiomyceteRhizoctonia oryzae?sativae

AbstractRhizoctonia oryzae-sativae is a soil-borne basidiomycete fungus that causes aggregate sheath spot disease on rice worldwide. Here, we report the complete genome sequence of a partitivirus designated as Rhizoctonia oryzae-sativae partitivirus 1(RosPV1) infecting this fungus. The genome of RosPV1 consists of two double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) segments. The largersegment, designated as dsRNA-1 (1,961 bp), contains a single open reading frame (ORF) that encodes a putative polypeptidewith a conserved RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) domain. The smaller segment, dsRNA-2 (1,819 bp), also hasa single ORF, which is predicted to encode the capsid protein (CP). BLAST searches and phylogenetic analyses suggestedthat RosPV1 is a representative member of a new species within the genus Alphapartitivirus. This is the first report of analphapartitivirus infecting the fungus R. oryzae-sativae

The influence of managerial optimism and self-regulation on learning and business growth expectations within an emerging economic context

Abstract This paper examines psychological and behavioral mechanisms that underlie business growth expectations by examining how managerial optimism and selfregulatory focus influence learning behaviors. To empirically examine these relationships,thestudysituatesinaresource-constrainedbusinesscontextbystudyingmanagers in two Pacific Island economies. Results indicate that a positive view toward gains encourages exploratory learning in unknown situations; whereas, a less optimistic dispositionandavoidancearerelated toexploitative learning.Thisfindingisconsequential as managerial learning that leans toward development of new insights and possibilities is associated with greater business growth expectations versus learning that adhere

Adult vaccination for pneumococcal disease: a comparisonof the national guidelines in Europe

    No full text
AbstractPneumococcal disease constitutes a major global health problem. Adults aged over 50 years and younger adults with specificchronic health conditions are at risk for invasive pneumococcal disease, associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. InEurope, two vaccine types are used in adults for pneumococcal immunization: pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23)and pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13). To provide an overview and to compare the national guidelines for pneumococcalimmunization for adults in Europe. In November 2016, national guidelines on pneumococcal vaccination for adults of 31European countries were obtained by Google search, the website of European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, andcontacting public health officials. In our analysis, we distinguished between age-based and risk-based guidelines. In October2017, we used the same method to retrieve guideline updates. We observed great variability regarding age, risk groups, vaccinetype, and use of boosters. In age-based guidelines, vaccination is mostly recommended in adults aged over 65 years using PPV23.Boosters are generally not recommended. An upper age limit for vaccination is reported in three countries. In the immunocompromisedpopulation, vaccination with both vaccines and administration of a booster is mostly recommended. In the populationwith chronic health conditions, there is more heterogeneity according vaccine type, sequence, and administration of boosters.Asplenia is the only comorbidity for which all countries recommend vaccination. The great variability in European pneumococcalvaccination guidelines warrants European unification of the guidelines for better control of pneumococcal disease. Keywords Pneumococcal vaccination . AbstractNeurosyphilis (NS) has different clinical manifestations and can appear during any stage of syphilis. We aimed to identify thefactors affecting poor outcome in NS patients. Patients with positive cerebrospinal fluid Venereal Disease Research Laboratorytest, and positive serological serum treponemal or nontreponemal tests were classified as definite NS. The data of 141 patientswith definite NS were submitted from 22 referral centers. Asymptomatic NS, syphilitic meningitis, meningovascular syphilis
