Anti-Gender Mobilizations in the Post-Yugoslav Space Hidden Connection

    No full text
The papers collected in this volume scrutinize anti-gender mobilizations in seven post-Yugoslav countries. Each of them portrays the national manifestations of the transnational narrative on ‘gender ideology/theory’. They do this by looking into relevant contexts, main actors, discursive practices and the mobilization strategies they employ. Since anti-gender mobilizations belong to newer socio-political phenomena (Kuhar & Paternotte, 2017), all papers focus on temporally recent developments. Notably, these campaigns result in similar outcomes across the region, irrespective of the varying levels of progressive gender equality legislation. This demonstrates how global ideologies are localized and adapted to specific cultural and political contexts, with the post-Yugoslav space serving as a compelling case study. We therefore suggest that this region offers a unique and underexplored lens for examining anti-gender mobilizations in a global context. Far from being a peripheral or isolated case, the post-Yugoslav space illustrates how global anti-gender narratives are translated and adapted to local contexts. Our analysis reveals that while the rhetoric and strategies of antigender actors in the post-Yugoslav space often mirror global trends, the region’s ethno-nationalist legacies and varied Europeanization trajectories imbue these campaigns with distinct characteristics. For this reason, we propose a reading that positions the post-Yugoslav space as a miniature showroom, a ‘microcosm’ of how anti-gender politics germinates and branches out. The collected volume demonstrates how the implementation of discursive and policy strategies leads to complementary results in purportedly different contexts, albeit at different paces

Between Bureaucracy and Community: Thinking With Public Health Collaboration in Serbia and Croatia

    No full text
This article explores how collaboration operates as both a concept and a practice in the post--socialist public health systems of Serbia and Croatia. Drawing on ethnographic research and expert interviews, it identifies diverse, often conflicting forms of collaboration. By tra-cing continuities and ruptures with Yugoslav social medicine, the article argues for reflexive, power-aware forms of partnership in contemporary health governance

    Navigating Institutional (Dis)Trust

    No full text
This chapter investigates the complex and dynamic relationship between democratic social movements and institutional trust and distrust. While movements are often grounded in social trust among members, they frequently express critical trust or outright distrust towards institutions. Drawing on qualitative data from 28 focus groups and 14 interviews with 14 grassroots movements across seven European countries, the chapter explores how movements perceive trust and distrust, and whether these attitudes influence their willingness to engage and cooperate with institutional actors. The findings reveal that institutional distrust is widespread but typically framed as a form of critical, democratic vigilance rather than anti-system sentiment. Movements often demand accountability and transparency rather than reject democratic institutions outright. Importantly, institutional cooperation is not solely determined by levels of trust or distrust but also shaped by strategic goals, past experiences, and interpersonal relationships. By situating trust and distrust as practice-oriented phenomena, the chapter contributes to a more nuanced understanding of democratic legitimacy, political engagement, and the strategic orientations of social movements in contemporary Europe

Youth Perceptions of Europe in the Western Balkans: Key Regional Patterns and Implications

    No full text
The central finding of this regional analysis is that young people in the Western Balkans maintain a strong normative identification with Europe, yet this attachment coexists with frustration, ambivalence, and structural constraints that limit their sense of agency and inclusion. Europe continues to function as a reference point for values and development, but its credibility depends on the consistency and visibility of its engagement

„Naša umetnost je naša borba! Naša dela, naš glas!”3 Transformativne umetničke prakse u aktuelnim studentskim protestima: slučaj izložbi ‘stUUdenti’

    No full text
This article analyzes the transformative role of student-led artistic practices within the ongoing student movement and recent protests in Serbia, focusing on two exhibitions titled “stUUdenti”. Drawing on Jacques Rancière’s concept of aesthetic experience, the study explores the exhibitions’ content, organization, and social context to understand how collective art practices operate as forms of resistance, social critique, and community building. Research findings indicate that these practices disrupt traditional hierarchies within the art system, foster participatory engagement, and produce new social relations through embodied gestures, collective silences, and performative interventions. The exhibitions show how art can function as a tool for social transformation by merging aesthetic experience with activism, emphasizing care, vulnerability, and mutual empowerment. By foregrounding the intersections of art, activism, and social engagement, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of art’s role in facilitating societal change and fostering collaborative, community-oriented cultural practices.Tekst istražuje transformativnu ulogu studentskih umetničkih praksi unutar aktuelnog stu dentskog pokreta i širih protesta u Srbiji, sa fokusom na dve izložbe pod nazivom „stUUden t i“. Kroz analizu sadržaja, organizacione strukture i društvenog konteksta izložbi, oslanjajući se na koncept estetskog iskustva Jacquesa Rancièrea, istražuje se potencijal kolektivnih umetničkih praksi kao oblika otpora, društvene kritike i izgradnje zajednice. Studija ukazuje da ove prakse narušavaju tradicionalne hijerarhije unutar umetničkog sistema, podstiču par t icipaciju i kreiraju nove društvene odnose kroz telesne gestove, kolektivne tišine i druge performativne intervencije. Spajanjem estetskog iskustva i aktivizma, uz naglašavanje brige, ranjivosti i uzajamnog osnaživanja, izložbe demonstriraju ulogu umetnosti u procesu druš tvene transformacije. Tekst se fokusira na presek umetnosti, aktivizma i društvenog anga žmana kako bi doprineo dubljem razumevanju odnosa umetnosti i društvenih promena, kao i potencijala umetnosti u razvoju kolaborativnih kulturnih praksi usmerenih ka izgradnji zajednice

Pravo na pobunu u doba digitalne komunikacije

In the seventeenth century, John Locke, while laying the foundations of the liberal system, was the first to theorise the right of rebellion. Within his framework, revolt against an oppressive regime was considered a collective right. However, as recent attempts at revolution under authoritarian regimes have demonstrated, the exercise of this right can prove challenging in the context of digital technologies. Compared to Locke’s era, there are notable developments concerning the motivations, principal actors, and methods of citizen uprisings. Digital technologies have played a significant role not only in facilitating revolts but also in enabling authoritarian restorations. This has underscored the urgency of safeguarding the right to rebellion by updating counterpowers against authoritarian tendencies to address the challenges of the digital age.U sedamnaestom veku, Džon Lok je, postavljajući temelje liberalnog sistema, prvi teoretisao pravo na pobunu.
