Price dynamics and market competition in resort industry: An agent-based modelling approach

    No full text
When resort quality is unclear before consumption, destinations use tools like customer profiles, numbers, and pricing strategies to attract tourists. To understand how these factors influence market dynamics, this study employs an Agent-Based Model (ABM) that simulates interactions between tourists and resorts, incorporating key elements such as pricing strategies, budget constraints, and crowding effects. By comparing competitive and heuristic pricing strategies, the findings reveal that heuristic approaches promote market stability, consumer diversity, and firm resilience, while competitive strategies often lead to market homogenization and reduced profitability. Access to market information is crucial for enhancing consumer utility and fostering healthy competition. These insights emphasize the need to balance short-term competitiveness with long-term sustainability, offering practical guidance for policymakers and destination managers. While based on stylized simulations, this research provides a foundation for further studies incorporating real-world data and addressing tourism market complexities. The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: This study has been carried out in the framework of the research project “Digital Transition and Innovation in the Labor Market and Mature Sectors.

    No full text

    No full text

Where and How as Key Factors for Knowledge-Enhanced Constrained Commonsense Generation

    No full text
This paper addresses a key limitation in Natural Language Generation (NLG) systems: their struggle with commonsense reasoning, which is essential for generating contextually appropriate and plausible text. The study proposes an approach to enhance the commonsense reasoning abilities of NLG systems by integrating external knowledge framed in a constrained commonsense generation task. The paper investigates strategies for extracting and injecting external knowledge into pre-trained models, specifically BART and T5, in both base and large configurations. Experimental results show that incorporating external knowledge, extracted using a simple strategy, leads to significant performance improvements, with the models achieving 88% accuracy in generating plausible and correct sentences. When refined methods for knowledge extraction are applied, the accuracy further increases to 92%. These findings underscore the crucial role of high-quality external knowledge in enhancing the commonsense reasoning capabilities of NLG systems, suggesting that such integration is vital for advancing their performance in real-world applications. The research work conducted is part of the R&D projects “CORTEX: Conscious Text Generation” (PID2021-123956OB-I00), funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/ and by “ERDF A way of making Europe”; “CLEAR.TEXT:Enhancing the modernization public sector organizations by deploying Natural Language Processing to make their digital content CLEARER to those with cognitive disabilities” (TED2021-130707B-I00), funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and “European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR”; “VIVES: “Pla de Tecnologies de la Llengua per al valencià” project (2022/TL22/00215334) from the Ministerio de Transformación Digital y por el Plan de Recuperación, Transformación y Resiliencia – Financiado por la Unión Europea – NextGenerationEU; and the project “NL4DISMIS: Natural Language Technologies for dealing with dis- and misinformation with grant reference (CIPROM/2021/021)" funded by the Generalitat Valenciana. The emergence of leisure travel or tourism in the 19th century, along with the development and modernization of transportation, meant that all types of travel increased significantly. The main goal of this paper is to highlight how, by the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, some tourist guides began to include enological routes among the new proposals for tourist activities. We regard this as a possible precursor to modern wine tourism. In fact, we have found 19th-century tourist or travel guides that promoted a tourist itinerary covering a vineyard area. One of these guides has been selected, and we have traced in it the presence of those elements that characterize and define it as a new 19th-century textual subgenre that foreshadows today’s promotional brochures and 2.0 web pages on wine tourism

José Saramago’s Caim in the light of Aristotelian emotions

    No full text
Western European culture has Romulus and Remus, Cain and Abel as archetypes of fraternal and fratricidal relationships, demonstrating the seminal force of history driven by litigation, conflict, paradox, dialectics and ambivalent forces. José Saramago revisits some episodes from the Old Testament in his novel Caim, in an exercise of synthesis and amplification to better caricature human and divine nature. The purpose of this novel is not to attack religion but to allegorize the Humanity; the core is the violence and its manifestations, laying bare the actions of a sadistic, wrathful, capricious, vengeful God. Emotions are expanded by feminine gallery, responsible to nuance the dimension of affections, fears, guilt, impulses, blackmail and madness. This paper aims to analyze Saramago’s novel Caim from the perspective of the rhetoric of emotions, under the Aristotelian mold and precepts, without ignoring the divergence that many of these concepts have in modern notions. In the first part, we will recognize how the parodic deviations contribute to mythological and biblical rewriting, without disregarding the post-modernist position between History and Fiction. In a second part, we will identify the palette of emotions in the most dysphoric and dystopian episodes. We will give special attention to the anger and wrath resulting from disdainful, insulting and contemptuous behavior. The main framework is not the relationship between Cain and Abel, but between Cain and God, placing them as antagonists, with an emphasis on the tragic dimension, with no space for major remissions in a violent and troubled relationship
