Cervical Epidural Round Cell Tumour Presenting As Retropharyngeal Abscess
This is an interesting case report of a patient with cervical epidural round cell tumor who presented as retropharyngeal abscess. This 5 years old child presented with clinical features of retropharyngeal abscess. This child classically had torticollis. CT and MRI imaging clinched the diagnosis. Biopsy was reported as cervical epidural round cell tumor. This case is being presented because of its rarity.
Noise Induced Hearing Loss: A Review
Noise induced hearing loss is one of most common hearing deficit which is almost completelypreventable. The hearing loss incurred would depend on the sound qualities, duration of exposure andindividual susceptibility and protection. Thereby it can be prevented as we have some set norms for thenoise at work places and recreational activities. Once suspected, screening and preventive measures toprevent further progression is taken. There are legislative guidelines for noise at work places for theemployers, preventive measures to be taken by employee and role of health professional in screening, assessing the hearing loss and accordingly advise for rehabilitative measures.
Bronchoscopy as a therapeutic and diagnostic tool- a 10 year retrospective study- Sur Hospital experience
A ten year retrospective study with the treatment of 48 patients (83 % children) who were admitted for suspected foreignbody aspiration in the department of otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery is reviewed. The object of thisstudy was to show the clinical manifestations, the radiological findings, the nature and distribution in thetracheobronchial tree and complications due to long standing foreign bodies in the bronchial tree. Males (25) were morecommonly involved as compared to females (23). Right main bronchus was involved in 7 patients (29%), left mainbronchus in 8 patients (33%) and trachea in 9 patients (38%). The most common foreign bodies found were Sunflowerseed (25%), watermelon seed (17%), and abhaya scarf pin (17%). The most frequent clinical manifestation was cough(46%) and most of the chest radiological finding did not detect any abnormality (52%). In conclusion, in spite of anobvious foreign body in the tracheobronchial tree many cases are not diagnosed because sudden choking at the time ofaspiration in children may not be noticed.
ROSAI DORFMAN DISEASE IN A PREGNANT FEMALE: A CASE REPORT
Rosai Dorfman disease (RDD) or sinus histiocytosis is a rare, idiopathic, nonneoplastic histiocytic proliferation of unknown etiology typically presenting withmassive cervical lymphadenopathy with or without systemic involvement. It mayoccur in any age group, but is most commonly seen in children and young adults. We report a case of RDD with bilateral massive cervical swelling in a 21 yearsold pregnant female. The swelling progressively increases in size after the onsetof pregnancy. FNAC was advised. The cytomorphology revealed lymphocytes, plasma cells and uni to multinucleated histiocytes with lymphophagocytosis andthe diagnosis of RDD was rendered. It is concluded that FNAC is a reliable anduseful tool for the diagnosis of sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy(RDD) and biopsy can be avoided, thus reducing the inconvenience to the patientsespecially in pregnancy.
Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions in Infant screening
Objective- Hearing impairment is a major problem worldwide, significantly delaying acquisition of speechin children. Unfortunately delayed detection of hearing impairment especially in developing countries, adds a significant burden on the society and the nation. Hence early detection of hearing impairment isimperative and the need of the hour lies in developing an easy, cost effective and reliable method fortesting large number of infants, Oto acoustic Emissions(OAE’s) being one such test. The objective of thisstudy was to asses the effectiveness and utility of Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAE) asa screening tool for assessment of hearing impairment in infants and to assess the relationship betweenselected risk factors and hearing loss.Design-This cross sectional study involving a two stage DPOAE testing, with Brainstem EvokedResponse Audiometry as a confirmatory test for infants failing the two stage test .Materials and method-One thousand infant were selected randomly and screened with DPOAE at age of24-72 hours. Infants who gave refer result were screened with DPOAE and infants failing the secondscreen underwent BERA testing.Result-Of the one thousand infants screened with DPOAE,119 infants had hearing loss on initial screen however on subsequent testing with DPOAE and later testing with BERA only 4 infants with hearing losswere detected.Conclussion-Hence initial DPOAE screen followed by BERA in failure cases is helpful for earlyidentification of infants with hearing loss, hence allowing for timely intervention.
Fracture zygoma and its management our experience
Zygoma is a very crucial component which maintains facial contour. Fractures involving zygoma isvery common, in fact it is the second most common facial bone to the fractured following facialtrauma (next only to nasal bones). Fractures involving maxilla not only creates cosmeticdeformities, it also causes disruption of ocular and mandibular functions too. This article attemptsto discuss in detail the etiopathogenesis and the various management options available. It alsoincludes our 3 years experience in treating these patients at Stanley Medical College Chennai.During the period of 3 years between 2010 - 2012 about 82 patients got treated in our institution forfaciomaxillary trauma.
‘old foley’s in a new bottle’- USE OF FOLEY’S CATHETER IN ANTERIOR MAXILLARY WALL FRACTURES
ABSTRACT Management of comminuted zygomaticomaxillary fractures are is an entity that has always tested the skill of surgeons. A variety of methods have been coined over the years for management of these fractures. Packing the antrum with a gauze or balloon can be used in much comminuted fractures especially with anterior antral wall communication. Internal immobilization with a Foley’s balloon catheter is being used widely in Blow out fractures of orbit and rarely in tripod fractures. Despite a thorough search, not much literature could be found of its use in anterior maxillary wall fractures. The purpose of this article is to appraise this technique in anterior maxillary wall fractures.
Citation Styles
The practice of evidence based medicine and widespread clinical research have rendered literature search,a vital tool .It is practically impossible to write any article without inputs from previous literature, whether from a book, journal or a website. The backbone of any publication is the bibliography or references. This is a compilation of all the sources of data used for the research paper. A reference mentions all the details of the source, namely title, authors, journal name, year, volume and issue number and page numbers. In order to avoid plagiarism, all references should be quoted in proper context after giving due credit to the respective authors. If a manuscript needs to be revised with inclusion of additional references, the authors will have to also modify the list of references appropriately to accommodate the same.
Non recurrent laryngeal nerve with right aberrant subclavian artery in recurrent case of papillary carcinoma of thyroid: an interesting clinical entity.
Background/objectives: A nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve is a rare anatomical variant and a routine preoperative imaging studies are not indicated. NRLN is related with absence of the brachiocephalic trunk and aberrant (mainly retroesophageal) course of theright subclavian artery which is evident on contrast enhanced CT scan of the chest.Case report: The patient presented with a swelling in the neck for 4 months which is slowly increasing in size. Patient gives history of a surgery done in the neck with an old midlinesuprasternal scar which was done 40 years earlier.laryngoscopic mirror examinartion was normal with moving vocal cords. Rest of the oral and oropharyngeal examination along with completeblood picture and biochemical investigations were normal. The patient was not a known diabetic or hypertensive. Conclusion: Accurate knowledge of frequent variations of the nerve along with the non recurrent variant reduces the risk of intraoperative injury. A nonrecurrent laryngealnerve(NRLN) is a rare anatomical variant and a routine preoperative imaging studies are not indicated. NRLN is related with absence of the brachiocephalic trunk and aberrant(mainly retroesophageal) course of the right subclavian artery which is evident on contrast enhanced CT scan of the chest.
