An analysis of Nicolas Berdyaev's philosophy of spirit

    Get PDF
This dissertation is about the philosophy of religion. Its purpose is to find a basis for the articulation of the reality of spirit. It considers Berdyaev's philosophy of spirit, aiming to answer four questions:- 1. How did Berdyaev come to this sense of the priority of spirit? 2. How did he verbalise the reality of spirit in his philosophy? 3. Can he help us to find ways in which we and others might grow in awareness of the spiritual realm? 4. Is his philosophy still of value today? I have surveyed Berdyaev's books as translated into English, and other relevant literature, and have attempted to present his ideas in a logical order. I offer an assessment of his philosophy, and give some account of its application to current issues. I conclude that his existential methods are still relevant today, that any philosophy of spirit must use methods comparable to them, and that we have much to leam from both his emphesis upon the manifestation of spirit in secular life, and his questioning faith. He represents an important but often forgotten strand within Orthodoxy

Genetically modified theology: The religious dimensions of public concerns about agricultural biotechnology

    No full text
This book chapter is not available through ChesterRep.This book chapter discusses human issues raised by genetically modified foods. The authors argue that public anxiety over GM foods has been misunderstood - public reaction can be seen as reasonable rather than irrational and emotional, concerns relate to the level of ontology and theology rather than physical health, and people are concerned about the spirit in which GM technology is being developed. The article includes analysis from focus groups.Christendom Trus

Periodic solutions of discrete Volterra equations

    No full text
This article is not available through ChesterRep.This article investigates periodic solutions of linear and nonlinear discrete Volterra equations of convolution or non-convolution type with unbounded memory. For linear discrete Volterra equations of convolution type, we establish Fredholm’s alternative theorem and for equations of non-convolution type, and we prove that a unique periodic solution exists for a particular bounded initial function under appropriate conditions. Further, this unique periodic solution attracts all other solutions with bounded initial function. All solutions of linear discrete Volterra equations with bounded initial functions are asymptotically periodic under certain conditions. A condition for periodic solutions in the nonlinear case is established. This article was submitted to the RAE2008 for the University of Chester - Applied Mathematics

Product focus: Postnatal breast and perineal pain

    No full text
This article is not available through ChesterRepPainful breasts and perineum are a very common phenomenon in the early postnatal period. Both types will cause acute pain and may cause considerable distress and discomfort for many mothers. Assessing pain before offering advice on how best to alleviate the pain is an important issue. Midwives will, therefore, need to routinely assess the intensity and quality of the pain by asking mothers to self-report. It is generally accepted that acute pain is managed inadequately by the use of systemic analgesics alone. Localized pain relief, however, can assist to alleviate acute pain and hot and cold therapy throughout the centuries has been used effectively to achieve this. This product focus describes the benefits of two cooling devices (Mom's Breast Soother and the feme Pad) manufactured by Florri-Feme Pharmaceuticals Ltd, that will assist newly delivered mothers to achieve breast and perineal pain relief

Frankensteins and cyborgs: Visions of the global future in an age of technology

    No full text
This article is not available through ChesterRep.This paper draws attention to the role of representation in the depiction of scientific and technological innovation as a means of understanding the narratives that circulate concerning the shape of things to come. It considers how metaphors play an important part in the conduct of scientific explanation, and how they do more than describe the world in helping also to shape expectations, normalise particular choices, establish priorities and create needs. In surveying the range of metaphorical responses to the digital and biotechnological age, we will see how technologies are regarded both as ’endangerment’ and ’promise’. What we believe ’technology’ is doing to ’us’ reflects important implicit philosophies of technology and its relationship to human agency and political choice; yet we also need to be alert to the assumptions about ’human nature’ itself which inform such reactions. The paper argues that embedded in the various representations implicit in new technologies are crucial issues of identity, community and justice: what it means to be (post)human, who is (and is not) entitled to the rewards of technological advancement, what priorities (and whose interests) will inform the shape of global humanity into the next century
