Leibniz on freedom of the being

Neste artigo examinaremos como Leibniz estabelece uma noção de liberdade capaz de não entrar em contradição com a concepção de um mundo em que todos os acontecimentos sejam pré-determinados. Para tanto, veremos como Leibniz é capaz de dissolver a oposição entre a determinação e a contingência dos acontecimentos apoiandose na noção de ser, sobretudo ao sublinhar o seu caráter ativo. Veremos ainda alguns aspectos em que esta proposta leibniziana contrapõe-se ao dualismo substancial cartesiano e visa superar impasses que daí resultam tanto para a física, pela total passividade da substância extensa, como para a metafísica, sobretudo nos aspectos em que a substância pensante adquire feições de mera negação da substância extensa, o que levará a uma concepção da vontade como pura arbitrariedade, incapaz de ser regulada por qualquer princípio, e do entendimento como mero instrumento a serviço dessa arbitrariedade.In this paper we intend to verify the way in which Leibniz establishes a notion of liberty able to do not contradict the conception of a world in which all events are previously determined. Therefore, we are going to examine the way in which Leibniz can dissolve the opposition between determination and contingency of the events by means of notion of being as action. Furthermore, we are going to indicate aspects in which the Leibnizian project is opposed to the Cartesian dualism of substances and intends to overcome its dilemmas related both to Physics, in consequence of the complete passivity of res extensa, and to Metaphysics, above all in the aspects that res cogitans appears as a kind of denial of res extensa. O pensamento renascentista foi responsável por uma vigorosa reflexão sobre a posição metafísica do homem no cosmos e sobre o papel da ação no interior da vida social. Intersubjectivity and transindividuality from Leibniz and Spinoza

Um dos mal-entendidos mais persistentes que cercam a filosofia leibniziana consiste, sem dúvida, em querer ver nela uma forma de espinosismo. Por outro lado, toda oposição que se faz entre Leibniz e Espinosa no plano teórico aparentemente não ultrapassa a visão hegeliana da relação entre os dois filósofos como oposição entre universalidade e individualidade. Pretende-se aqui, diferentemente, confrontar os dois filósofos em relação à questão da individualidade confrontando os seus prolongamentos teóricos do século XX. De um lado, a intersubjetividade husserliana como prolongamento teórico da monadologia; de outro, o conceito simondoniano de transindividualidade que, com Balibar, permite-nos prolongar o pensamento espinosano na contemporaneidade. Tentar-se-á marcar toda a distância que separa estes dois sistemas segundo uma abordagem que não se limita a repetir o velho refrão hegeliano.One of the greatest persistent misunderstanding around leibnizian philosophy is to think it as a sort of spinozism. Likewise, every attempt to show Leibniz and Spinoza as opposed to each other do not surpass the hegelian interpretation, according to which both philosophies are seen as antagonism between universality and individuality. Our aim is, on the contrary, to contrast one philosopher to another in respect to the matter of individuality and their relations to the XXth Century thinking: on the one hand, the husserlian intersubjectivity as the philosophical continuation of the Monadology; on the other hand, the simondnian concept of transindividuality, which upon the developments of Balibar turns the spinozian thought possible to be continued in contemporaneity. We intend to show the distance that keep both systems away one from another by means of an interpretation that do not simply repeat the old hegelian refrain

The “privilege of thinking”: an essay to interpret

Consideramos neste artigo uma forma particular da “batalha de idéias” que diferenciamos de outras formas de confrontação aberta, como a refutação. Trata-se de uma modalidade mais sutil, que procura incidir nos pesos relativos dos componentes teóricos de certas concepções. Associamos esta forma da produção teórica com a crítica materialista, o que nos permite conectar os esforços teóricos de Espinosa e de Marx, e também arriscar uma interpretação de uma tese polêmica – relativa ao privilégio do atributo pensamento – que Deleuze elabora na sua leitura da Ética.We consider in this article a particular form of the “battle of ideas” which we differentiate from other ways of open confrontation, as the refutation. It has to do with a subtler modality that tries to meddle in the relative weights of the theoretical components of certain conceptions. We associate this form of the theoretical production with the materialistic critic; this allows us to connect Espinosa’s and Marx’s theoretical efforts, and also to essay an interpretation of a controversial theory – relative to the privilege of the attribute of thought – that Deleuze elaborates in his reading of the Ethics
