Performing identity: the case of the (Greek) Cypriot National Guard

Students of International Relations are taught that the modern nation-state has a monopoly on the (legitimate) use of violence. However, in the case of the Republic of Cyprus this does not seem to be the case, since its armed forces, the Cypriot National Guard (CNG), are intimately embedded within Greece’s military structure, and half the island remains under Turkish occupation. The colonization of Cyprus (1571–1960) and subsequent decolonization has led to the gradual construction of two rigid identities, Greek and Turkish, that have been institutionalized legally and imposed constitutionally. This paper seeks to answer two questions. First, how does the CNG perform and therefore constitute a ‘Greek identity’? Second, is this performance epistemically violent, hindering the formation of hybrid identities? We use autoethnography, interviews, and insights from Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of the habitus and Judith Butler’s performativity theory to explore these two questions. We argue that the CNG performs a Greek identity in three key configurations: 1) the operational link between the Greek Army and the CNG; 2) the explicit connection to both ancient and modern Greece through various CNG insignia and practices, including parades and marching songs; and 3) the entrenchment of the Greek Orthodox Church within its practices

Ο ρόλος της Ελληνικής Αστυνομίας στη Διαχείριση Κρίσεων σε περιστατικά που απορρέουν από την δράση Εγκληματικών και Τρομοκρατικών Οργανώσεων, στο πλαίσιο της διασφάλισης και προάσπισης του αγαθού της Δημόσιας Ασφάλειας.

Η Δημοσία Ασφάλεια αποτελεί ένα έννομο αγαθό, που προσφέρεται σε όλα τα άτομα που απαρτίζουν την κοινωνία μας, και συνιστά έναν από τους βασικότερους πυλώνες που συντελούν στην ομαλή και ειρηνική συμβίωση των πολίτων. Το αίσθημα της Δημόσιας Ασφάλειας κλυδωνίζεται στη συνείδηση των πολιτών, όταν παρατηρούνται φαινόμενα τρομοκρατίας και έντονης ανομίας. Γενεσιουργοί λόγοι αυτών των φαινομένων αποτελούν οι εγκληματικές οργανώσεις που σκοπό έχουν το οικονομικό όφελος μέσω της διάπραξης ποινικών αδικημάτων, και οι τρομοκρατικές οργανώσεις που διέπονται από ιδεολογικά κίνητρα. Στη παρούσα εργασία πραγματοποιείται μια ιστορική αναδρομή στην εξέλιξη του εγκληματικού και τρομοκρατικού φαινομένου, τόσο σε διεθνές επίπεδο όσο και στα πλαίσια της Ελλάδας, ενώ παράλληλα γίνεται μνεία στα γεγονότα-ορόσημα που επηρέασαν καταλυτικά στην μετεξέλιξη των δυο αυτών φαινομένων. Η Ελληνική Αστυνομία αποτελεί το όργανο της Δημόσιας Διοίκησης που μεταξύ των λοιπών αρμοδιοτήτων της, είναι η προάσπιση και η διασφάλιση του αγαθού της Δημόσιας Ασφάλειας. Προς εκπλήρωση του σκοπού αυτού λειτουργεί τόσο σε προληπτικό όσο και κατασταλτικό επίπεδο. Η επίτευξη του σκοπού αυτού απαιτεί συνεχή και αδιάκοπη προσπάθεια από τα στελέχη της Ελληνικής Αστυνομίας και διαμέσου της αποτελεσματικότητας τους, καλλιεργείται και εμπεδώνεται το αίσθημα της ασφάλειας στους πολίτες.Public Security is a legal asset, offered to all individuals who make up our society, and is one of the key pillars that contribute to the smooth and peaceful coexistence of citizens. The sense of public security is shaken in the minds of citizens when terrorism and lawlessness are observed. Criminal grounds for such phenomena are criminal organizations that aim to profit financially through the commission of criminal offenses, and terrorist organizations governed by ideological motives. In this thesis provides a historical overview of the evolution of the criminal and terrorist phenomenon, both internationally and within Greece, while referring to milestone events that have catalyzed the evolution of these two phenomena. The Hellenic Police is the body of the Public Administration which among its other competencies is the protection and safeguarding of the good of Public Security. It serves both preventive and repressive levels to fulfill this purpose. Achieving this goal requires continuous and uninterrupted efforts by Hellenic Police officers and through their effectiveness, cultivates and instills a sense of security in the citizens
