The Surface Laplacian Technique in EEG: Theory and Methods
This paper reviews the method of surface Laplacian differentiation to study
EEG. We focus on topics that are helpful for a clear understanding of the
underlying concepts and its efficient implementation, which is especially
important for EEG researchers unfamiliar with the technique. The popular
methods of finite difference and splines are reviewed in detail. The former has
the advantage of simplicity and low computational cost, but its estimates are
prone to a variety of errors due to discretization. The latter eliminates all
issues related to discretization and incorporates a regularization mechanism to
reduce spatial noise, but at the cost of increasing mathematical and
computational complexity. These and several others issues deserving further
development are highlighted, some of which we address to the extent possible.
Here we develop a set of discrete approximations for Laplacian estimates at
peripheral electrodes and a possible solution to the problem of multiple-frame
regularization. We also provide the mathematical details of finite difference
approximations that are missing in the literature, and discuss the problem of
computational performance, which is particularly important in the context of
EEG splines where data sets can be very large. Along this line, the matrix
representation of the surface Laplacian operator is carefully discussed and
some figures are given illustrating the advantages of this approach. In the
final remarks, we briefly sketch a possible way to incorporate finite-size
electrodes into Laplacian estimates that could guide further developments.Comment: 43 pages, 8 figure
Compressive Source Separation: Theory and Methods for Hyperspectral Imaging
With the development of numbers of high resolution data acquisition systems
and the global requirement to lower the energy consumption, the development of
efficient sensing techniques becomes critical. Recently, Compressed Sampling
(CS) techniques, which exploit the sparsity of signals, have allowed to
reconstruct signal and images with less measurements than the traditional
Nyquist sensing approach. However, multichannel signals like Hyperspectral
images (HSI) have additional structures, like inter-channel correlations, that
are not taken into account in the classical CS scheme. In this paper we exploit
the linear mixture of sources model, that is the assumption that the
multichannel signal is composed of a linear combination of sources, each of
them having its own spectral signature, and propose new sampling schemes
exploiting this model to considerably decrease the number of measurements
needed for the acquisition and source separation. Moreover, we give theoretical
lower bounds on the number of measurements required to perform reconstruction
of both the multichannel signal and its sources. We also proposed optimization
algorithms and extensive experimentation on our target application which is
HSI, and show that our approach recovers HSI with far less measurements and
computational effort than traditional CS approaches.Comment: 32 page

Feminist Judging Matters: How Feminist Theory and Methods Affect the Process of Judgment
The word βfeminismβ means different things to its many supporters (and undoubtedly, to its detractors). For some, it refers to the historic struggle: first to realize the right of women to vote and then to eliminate explicit discrimination against women from the nation\u27s laws. For others, it is a political movement, the purpose of which is to raise awareness about and to overcome past and present oppression faced by women. For still others, it is a philosophy--a system of thought--and a community of belief centering on attaining political, social, and economic equality for women, men, and people of any gender.
For us, the editors of Feminist Judgments: Rewritten Opinions of the United States Supreme Court, feminism is all of those things and more. Feminism is both a movement and a mode of inquiry. In its best and most capacious form, feminism embraces justice for all and seeks to ally itself with rights-based movements for people of color, the poor, immigrants, refugees, religious minorities, disabled individuals, LGBTQ+ people, and other historically marginalized groups.
This essay presents feminism as the foundation for a developing form of rich, complex, and practical legal scholarship--the lens and the means through which we may approach and resolve many legal problems. First, this essay explores the intellectual foundations of feminist legal theory and situates the United States and international feminist judgments projects within that scholarly tradition. It next considers how the feminist judgments projects move beyond traditional academic scholarship to bridge the gap between the real-world practice of law and feminist theory, a move that made the publication of Feminist Judgments: Rewritten Opinions of the United States Supreme Court an especially fitting topic for the 10th Annual Conference held at the University of Baltimore Center on Applied Feminism.
When they write feminist judgments (using feminist perspectives or methods to produce revised versions of actual court opinions), feminist authors translate feminist theory into the language of law practice and judging. Their translations demonstrate the potential for lawyers to incorporate feminist theory and methods into oral and written arguments, for law students to gain deeper insights from and to learn the practical utility of feminist theory, and for judges to recognize how incorporating feminist perspectives may transform the reasoning or outcome of a case without changing the law or the facts of the underlying lawsuit. Finally, this essay uses contemporary examples of feminist judging to illustrate that the gap between feminist theory and judicial decision making is narrowing, a real-world advance that suggests a widening judicial audience for Feminist Judgments
