Rape Talk: Student Awareness and Perceptions of Campus Sexual Assault and Resources

    Get PDF
This project evaluates student perceptions of campus sexual assault and related resources at Marquette University of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As campus sexual assault and an unsafe rape culture are still persistent, research is needed to bring about awareness and spark an open discourse of this issue. The original data of this project consists of the researcher’s autoethnography, observations of Marquette’s online sexual violence resources, student interviews, and an online student survey. After analyzing this data, the most important finding was that students do not share the same perceptions and knowledge of this issue, despite receiving the same resources. Also, the relationship between Marquette students and staff and other non-student people is distant and in need of development. Lastly, students want to see more change on campus concerning this issue. However, the overarching theme of their desires for change is a wish for more transparency on campus.https://epublications.marquette.edu/english_3210ur/1028/thumbnail.jp

Student Awareness of Professional Health Organizations

Awareness of health related organization within a student population was evaluated to better understand the knowledge and demands of the student population with it comes to these organizations. Professional organizations offer a wide range of benefits to student members with many providing valuable information about internships, careers, and service opportunities. Students enrolled in universitybased academic programs throughout Idaho were invited to participate in webbased anonymous survey. The survey was distributed at each institution through faculty teaching various health related courses. The survey was designed to gather information from students on: awareness of health related organizations, current involvement in various organizations, knowledge of the potential benefits of participation in an organization, and perceived benefits of membership in an organization and preferred routes of communication. Findings will be shared with health related organizations and published on the Idaho Public Health Association\u27s website. The study was approved by Boise State University Social & Behavioral Institutional Review Board, IRB #193SB15028

Student awareness of the Daily News-Record

The Daily News-Record is a local daily newspaper located in Harrisonburg, Virginia, a city with a population of about 52,000. The Daily News-Record\u27s print circulation is 26,000, while its digital circulation is 800. The paper also houses other local publications, such as the Rocktown Weekly, a free weekly publication that covers local news and the local music scene. James Madison University is a mid-sized public university also located in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The researcher wanted to understand JMU student awareness of local news sources, student consumption of news sources, student intention to read the local paper and whether there was a relationship with student community involvement, and student perception of campus opinion leaders. The survey research resulted in these major findings: 1) JMU students were mostly unaware of local news sources, but among local news sources, were most aware of the Daily News-Record; 2) students rely on online sources the most (Internet, Facebook, etc.) for gathering news; 3) students trust professors most as campus opinion leaders; 4) very few students had newspaper subscriptions, but when they did, their purpose of having one was to receive local news; 5) students were, by a very small margin, more likely to read and subscribe to the Rocktown Weekly compared to the Daily News-Record; 6) students more involved in the community were more aware of and more likely to read the Daily News-Record and Rocktown Weekly; 7) students more involved in the community had a higher intention to read and subscribe to the Daily News-Record and Rocktown Weekly; and 8) students who rely on print newspapers and print newspaper websites had a higher intention to read and subscribe to the Daily News-Record and Rocktown Weekly. Based on these primary research findings, goals, objectives, strategies, and tactics were created for a potential future campaign for Daily News-Record staff members to implement. A key public that would be targeted in this campaign was identified as a result of the research findings. This public has been named the Community Oriented Traditional Media Consumers (COTMC). This student public consumes more traditional forms of media, such as newspapers and newspaper websites, and is heavily involved in their community. Members of this public are more likely to read and subscribe to both publications, and students overall were more likely to subscribe to the Rocktown Weekly, so the COTMC public would be targeted in a campaign to increase their readership of the Rocktown Weekly. JMU students as a whole would also be targeted in this campaign, but because their intentions to read and subscribe to the publications were low, they would be targeted in a campaign to increase their overall awareness of both publications

Intersectionality: An Arts-Based Approach to Student Awareness

    Get PDF
abstract: This study was designed to introduce specific activities/lessons to students in an online university gender and communication course. It was also designed to determine how participants made meaning of and felt about learning about intersectionality of gender and cultural identities, using arts-based data collection. Previous research on the symbolic nature of language, ground-breaking work on intersectionality, and work on arts-based research were instrumental frameworks in guiding this study. Participants were asked to create poems in response to their readings of class materials and vignettes about cultural identity issues that were provided to them. The researcher was able to determine how individuals from disparate cultural backgrounds made meaning of what they read and then how they articulated their feelings relative to learning about intersectionality, their experiences with arts-based data collection, and their perceptions of their futures application of the lessons learned. The poetic expression about those experiences provides a valuable initial base for future research with regard to more narrowly focused studies of gender intersected with identities associated with socioeconomic status, age, ableism, religious affiliation, and other cultural identities.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Communication 201

Student Awareness of Models in First-Year Engineering Courses

    Get PDF
Contribution: This study assesses more than 800 students\u27 awareness of engineering model types before and after taking two first-year engineering courses across two semesters and evaluates the effect of each course. Background: All engineers must be able to apply and create models to be effective problem solvers, critical thinkers, and innovative designers. To help them develop these skills, as a first step, it is essential to assess how to increase students\u27 awareness of engineering models. According to Bloom\u27s taxonomy, the lower remember and understand levels, which encompass awareness, are necessary for achieving the higher levels, such as apply, analyze, evaluate, and create. Research Questions: To what extent did student awareness of model types change after taking introductory engineering courses? To what extent did student awareness of model types differ by course or semester? Methodology: In this study, a survey was designed and administered at the beginning and end of the semester in two first-year engineering courses during two semesters in a mid-sized private school. The survey asked students questions about their definition of engineering modeling and different types of models. Findings: Overall, student awareness of model types increased from the beginning of the semester toward the end of the semester, across both semesters and courses. There were some differences between course sections, however, the students\u27 awareness of the models at the end of the academic year was similar for both groups

Student Awareness and Use of Rubrics in Online Classes

    Get PDF
The design, development and deployment of online instruction has become standard practice. The focus of the study was on student perceptions of course rubrics and not on the rubrics, themselves, or the instructors. In order to improve student engagement online we conducted an exploratory study of the awareness and perceptions of course rubrics. Fifty graduate students completed an online survey at the end of the semester about their awareness and perceptions of course rubrics. All students reported that they were aware that course rubrics existed. They indicated that they had learned about this information through the course syllabus, professor announcements via email and posts to LMS. Most students reported reviewing rubrics prior to submitting an assignment. One of the key findings from this study was that students see rubrics as a mechanism for scaffolding their performance, and thus, instructors need to focus more effort on designing rubrics to accomplish more than student assessment

An exploratory survey study assessed community college student awareness of signs, risk factors, and resources for depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. The majority of the participants reported adequate awareness of mental disorders. Females were more likely than males and sophomores were more likely than freshmen to recognize signs and risk factors of mental illness. Half of the participants were unaware of campus mental health resources. Strategies for increasing student awareness of mental health problems, counseling, and other campus resources for mental illness are presented
