How Nervous Should Your Cybersecurity Team Be When the Gen-Z Population Joins the Workforce over the Next Few Years?

UD’s Center for Cybersecurity & Data Intelligence did a small study in March 2018 that explored how the different generations encounter cybersecurity awareness and practices. A key group that we analyzed was Generation Z (Gen-Z). these are the kids now in high school that will soon be entering college and the broader workforce. Our study applied our Cyber-Mindfulness model to our analysis of the various generations - from Baby Boomers & Gen X-ers to Millennials and Gen Z. Using both our original data and existing data sources, we were able to craft descriptive profiles of the generational differences with regard to cybersecurity attitudes and behaviors. It is really interesting to see the differences in generations and how these Gen-Z students are going to bring a very disruptive set of expectations and new behaviors to both college and career

Developing, Adopting, and Executing 100% Net-Renewable Electricity Resolutions at the Local Level

In the absence of national leadership on climate policy, municipalities are adopting resolutions to reduce their carbon footprint and transition to clean energy. However, what leads to successful adoption of these resolutions and how to effectively implement climate goals at the community level needs further exploration. To investigate these questions, this thesis examines the resolutions adopted in Salt Lake City, Park City, and Moab, Utah to transition to 100% renewable electricity by 2032. Data was collected through documents, such as city reports and newspapers, and interviews with government officials, city staff, and community members involved with the resolution process. A time series analysis and thematic analysis were used to determine casual events and identify fundamental themes within the data. Each city’s plan for resolution execution was compared to the approaches and techniques outlined in the community-based social marketing framework and the theory of diffusion of innovations. These findings deliver a transferable five-step framework to assist other cities in adopting similar resolutions and strategies to engage community members with practices that will help cities achieve these ambitious resolutions

The Diffusion of Innovations: A Review and Explication of Central Concepts

    Get PDF
The study of the diffusion of innovations attempts to understand how new things or ideas, after a period of time, become widely adopted throughout a group or society. Everett Rogers (1983), one of the pioneers in this area of research, sees the diffusion process as essential to understanding social change. Diffusion, as Rogers sees it, is essentially a communication activity. Accordingly, social change consists of the introduction of something new - invention, followed by the process of diffusing the invention - this is done through all forms of communication, and finally the process ends with some type of consequence, or effect. The largest body of research in this area focuses on the adoption of new farming methods. The need to expand crop yields for a growing world population has been a primary goal of many nations. At the same time, farmers work their fields with numerous threats to their livelihood - bad weather, disease, and drought - they are not likely to add to that risk by going with new or unproven ideas. However, they have adopted new ideas over time, so studying the process and in turn, speeding-up the channels in that process, has proved to be quite successful

Planning for Technology-Enhanced Learning on Residential Campuses

While many institutions are feverishly designing and assembling distance-learning courses for delivery of off-site degree programs, even more are wondering how best to create and execute technology plans for their residential campuses. Planning and implementing a sustainable infrastructure requires a widely shared vision that speaks directly to your mission, plenty or money and strong leadership that ranges from student ranks up through your board of trustees

    Is Your Organization Cyber-Mindful?

Let’s face it, cybersecurity isn’t going to get any easier in 2018. As long as there is a financial or geo-political incentive, the threats will keep coming and the level of exploit sophistication will keep rising. Winning this battle truly requires a change in our approach. If you have been scanning the popular media or reading our professional publications, you’ll notice that the attack vectors are shifting from technical exploits to human vulnerabilities. Like most businesses, even the bad guys are striving to be more efficient, and it is very cost-effective to socially-engineer a way into your system rather than deploying a technical exploit. Thus, in addition to maintaining our technical vigilance, we now must strengthen our cybersecurity awareness training just to keep up with the bad guys. Cybersecurity “human factors” is an area that many organizations are not fully prepared to do effectively

Contemporary paradigm for the evaluation and treatment of hereditary gastric cancer

    Get PDF
Gastric cancer is the third leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Survival is linked to stage at diagnosis and tolerance to surgery and adjuvant therapy. The emergence of sophisticated methods to identify patients at high risk for the development of gastric cancer has given us an opportunity to eliminate a lethal disease in an identifiable patient population. Guidelines and recommendations have been established and prophylactic total gastrectomy is considered the most effective treatment. However, this requires substantial physical and emotional investment. It is imperative that patients and families are supported by genetic counseling, ongoing surveillance, and survivorship studies

Chlorophyll f and chlorophyll d are produced in the cyanobacterium Chlorogloeopsis fritschii when cultured under natural light and near-infrared radiation

We report production of chlorophyll f and chlorophyll d in the cyanobacterium Chlorogloeopsis fritschii cultured under near-infrared and natural light conditions. C. fritschii produced chlorophyll f and chlorophyll d when cultured under natural light to a high culture density in a 20 L bubble column photobioreactor. In the laboratory, the ratio of chlorophyll f to chlorophyll a changed from 1:15 under near-infrared, to an undetectable level of chlorophyll f under artificial white light. The results provide support that chlorophylls f and d are both red-light inducible chlorophylls in C. fritschii

Skill in epistemology I: Skill and knowledge

Knowledge and skill are intimately connected. In this essay, I discuss the question of their relationship and of which (if any) is prior to which in the order of explanation. I review some of the answers that have been given thus far in the literature, with a particular focus on the many foundational issues in epistemology that intersect with the philosophy of skill
