Sexual Harassment Prevention Policies at Japanese Universities

publisher藤沢In recent years, an accumulation of Japanese research about sexual harassment and a number of very public court cases involving prominent public figures placed the issue of sexual harassment in the media spotlight. Japan was forced to recognise sexual harassment as a national problem, and not an issue, which was confined to the Western world. In April 1999, the Japanese government realised the need to amend existing laws to include sexual harassment under article twenty-one of the Equal Opportunity Law. For the first time in Japan’s legal history, sexual harassment against a woman was not just a personal problem between two individuals; employers were now also held responsible for occurrences of sexual harassment in the workplace. Universities across Japan were not exempt from this new legislation and this paper will explore the ways in which universities have tried to tackle the problem of sexual harassment on campus since amendments to the Equal Opportunity Law were created. Visual strategies individual universities have taken up to spread awareness of sexual harassment will be investigated, for example the complex process of creating posters, leaflets and web pages about sexual harassment. Universities in Japan appear to be trying very hard to create an awareness of sexual harassment but unless attitudes on an individual level change how effective these strategies are still remains to be seen.

publisher藤沢Last semester, in the Academic English Program at Tama University’s Department of Global Studies, I created exercises on child labor based on the documentary Stolen Childhoods (2005). After teaching it last semester, I felt that the course was missing something--especially an overview of possible solutions to poverty. I have redone the course materials, to make them more content-oriented. Now, students will focus on three aspects in the course Child Labor in an Age of Globalization: 1) The range of value-based solutions to the issues of poverty; 2) Voices from the poor of the world; and 3) The work of NGOs and government programs. In this article I will focus the value-based solutions to poverty

After the lesson observation, a one-on-one conference was held with the author and the observed language teacher to discuss the lesson. This report focuses on the supervisory discourse during these conferences.

publisher藤沢In this paper, I report on a three-week, digital photo story project in a developing content-based, technology-driven curriculum for advanced learners in a first-year speaking course at Tama University, School of Global Studies. The project is discussed in reference to two of the overall objectives of the course: 1) providing students with opportunities to engage with new media, new technologies, and new types of texts; and, 2) in so doing, introducing students to the concept of genre switching. Ultimately, the course is designed to prepare students for the linguistic expectations of schooling and will hopefully provide at least one, much-needed link between academic English program courses and the courses outside the academic English program.
