Career psychological intervention should provide opportunities for the development of career knowledge and skills, allowing students to implement informed decisions. In this sense, we implemented a career group intervention program designed for 9th grade students, consisting of seven sessions, five of which were with the students and two with the parents and each respective child. Eighteen boys and 22 girls (n = 40), students of a public school in the north of Portugal, with ages between 13 and 16 years old (M = 14.08, SD = 12.47), participated voluntarily in the program. The Adaptability Scale was used in a pre and post-test design. The results indicated the existence of statistically significant differences between pre and post-test in the scores of the global composite adaptability scale and of each of its four dimensions. These results support the importance of career intervention in the increment of students’ confidence in their career skills and attitudes. We conclude about the positive effects of career interventions, supporting the importance of the development of offers in this field, particularly in schools.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

While the practice of a contract as required by the mechanisms of social action tends to develop (housing support, help to young adults, sheltering…), it is worth asking ourselves about the foundation of the contract in social work and to recall the ethical principles as well as the operational interest of this tool. The purpose of the present article is to explain what a contract is, and what its interest and its place are within the social workers' professional methodology. Since the use of this technique is sometimes uneasy, we will concentrate on the more usual difficulties. Finally, we will tackle the ethical basis of a contract in social work, and more specifically the notions of autonomy and acceptance of a client, of mutual trust and involvement

    Personality and well-being in adolescents

Different profiles of the character dimensions of self-directedness, cooperativeness and self-transcendence result in different levels of wellbeing among adults. However, the description of the multidimensional character profiles on adolescents’ composite wellbeing remains unexplored. This study builds on previous studies with adults, and examines the linear and non-linear associations between the dimensions of the psychobiological model of personality and well-being in adolescents. Participated in this study 1540 adolescents (M=15.44, SD=1.731). Personality was assessed using the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI). Well-being was evaluated in a composite perspective: satisfaction with social support, health-related quality of life, satisfaction with life and affect. Variable-centered and individual-centered analyses were performed.Self-directedness was strongly associated with all dimensions of affective and cognitive well-being regardless of the other two character traits. Cooperativeness was associated with non-affective well-being and with positive affect, but only when associated to elevation of Self-directedness and Self-transcendence. Self-Directedness and Cooperativeness explained 15.5% of the non-affective well-being variance. Self-Directedness and Self-Transcendence explained 10.4% of the variance in affective well-being. This study confirms the tendencies found in previous studies with adults from other societies, where each character dimension gives an independent contribution to well-being depending on the interactions with other Character dimensions. Also, this study highlights the importance of considering the non-linear influences of the character dimensions in understanding of adolescents’ wellbeing. These results have strong implications for youth positive mental health promotion, including for school-based policies and practices

This document is the authors’ version of the final accepted manuscript, published 01.08.2020 by Journal of Happiness Studies. doi: 10.1007/s10902-020-00299-5 Correspondence concerning this article should be addressed to Prof. Paulo Moreira, Instituto de Psicologia e de Ciências da Educação, Universidade Lusíada, Rua de Moçambique 21 e 71, Porto 4100-348, Portugal. Email: [email protected] there is evidence that parental attachment and personality interact during development and exert mutual influences on one another, studies describing how parental attachment and personality dimensions interact in predicting well-being are scarce. Studies that help clarify the shared and unique variance on well-being explained by these two constructs are required, and as such, the objective of the present study was to describe the relationships between personality, attachment, and well-being. A total of 336 adolescents participated in this study (Mage = 15 years; SD = 1.73). Participants completed self-report measures of personality, attachment, and well-being. The present study expands current knowledge in three ways. First, attachment dimensions of communication, trust, and involvement were significant predictors of well-being, even after controlling for age, gender, and personality dimensions. Second, age and gender moderate the associations between parental attachment and cognitive (but not emotional) well-being, reflecting the representations systems, which are culturally and socially construed underlying cognitive well-being. Third, adolescents low in self-directedness and low in persistence are more dependent on their parental attachment to have better well-being. In sum, our results support the idea that parental attachment is one of the most crucial mechanisms for the promotion of well-being because it acts both as a promoter of the development of adolescent socio-cognitive processes (such as self-directedness, which development depends strongly on the parental factors) and as a coping mechanism for those with less adaptive personality characteristics.Fundação Minerva - Cultura Ensino e investigação Científic

Japan’s mass media : insular news in a globalized world

Lusíada. Política internacional e segurança. - ISSN 1647-1342. - S. 1, n. 11 (2014). - p. 13-27Globalization continues to bring the world closer together in many ways, but this does not necessarily mean that the news provided to us by the mass media is becoming more global in nature. This is particularly paradoxical, given the major advances in information and communication technology that should potentially have led to a broader perspective of the world as a whole. Among those countries with the financial and technological resources to build media with a global perspective, Japan in particular appears to be lagging behind in this regard. This paper begins by examining the proportion of world news provided by a variety of media corporations, and trends regarding the geographical distribution of world news. It then looks at the ‘home’ country angle that can be found in a certain proportion of the news that is ostensibly about the outside world. Finally, it discusses the policy implications of such an insular media, concluding that the current state of affairs leads to a narrow, subjective and incomplete view of the world at many levels in society that benefits neither Japan nor the world at large

International journal of engineering and industrial management . - ISSN 1647-578X. - N. 5 (2013). - p. 11-38.The events in recent years have pushed many companies to extreme situations, testing their ability to adapt them to a changing and turbulent environment. Especially, if we consider the effect of "firm death" or "cessation of business activities" on numerous socio-economic stakeholders. Based on the ideas of the Stakeholder Theory, and emphasizing social aspects related to employment, this paper verifies empirically the link between "employee job satisfaction" and the rate of failure in an specific activity sector , understood as cessation of activity. Also, we analyze the capability of job satisfaction as a variable to predict a future business failure. For this purpose, we examine a sample of nine activity sectors from 2007 to 2010. The results show the importance of information on "employee job satisfaction" as a useful tool for judging the risk of a future situation of cessation, so that it may be useful to researchers and managers

Polis. - ISSN 0872-8208. - S. 2, n. 4 (Julho-Dezembro 2021). - p. 211-215.A former territory of the Kingdom of Denmark which became an independent republic in 1944, Iceland is, on various levels, an interesting case-study regarding its recent political and electoral evolution, especially after the financial and economic crisis of 2008. In truth, it was this crisis’ sequels which were the catalysts of the attempted “popular” constitutional reform, which if successful would have allowed to substantially replace or review the 1944 Constitution and the reconfiguration of the party system with the emergence of several new parties, the fusion of old political forces as well as the programmatic modification of some traditional parties. We shall take a lateral approach to some of these aspects, given that the essence of the present work is the holding of elections to the Icelandic Parliament (known in its original term as “Althingi”) which took place on the 25th of September 2021. This was the 30th electoral act to the legislative assembly since 1931 and the results were surprising to most observers
