EVALUATING FORECASTS OF DISCRETE VARIABLES: PREDICTING CATTLE QUALITY GRADES
Little research has been conducted on evaluating out-of-sample forecasts of limited dependent variables. This study describes the large and small sample properties of two forecast evaluation techniques for limited dependent variables: receiver-operator curves and out-of-sample-log-likelihood functions. The methods are shown to provide identical model rankings in large samples and similar rankings in small samples. The likelihood function method is slightly better at detecting forecast accuracy in small samples, while receiver-operator curves are better at comparing forecasts across different data. By improving forecasts of fed-cattle quality grades, the forecast evaluation methods are shown to increase cattle marketing revenues by $2.59/head.Marketing,
Quantum information transport to multiple receivers
The importance of transporting quantum information and entanglement with high
fidelity cannot be overemphasized. We present a scheme based on adiabatic
passage that allows for transportation of a qubit, operator measurements and
entanglement, using a 1-D array of quantum sites with a single sender (Alice)
and multiple receivers (Bobs). Alice need not know which Bob is the receiver,
and if several Bobs try to receive the signal, they obtain a superposition
state which can be used to realize two-qubit operator measurements for the

Classical Teleportation of a Quantum Bit
Classical teleportation is defined as a scenario where the sender is given
the classical description of an arbitrary quantum state while the receiver
simulates any measurement on it. This scenario is shown to be achievable by
transmitting only a few classical bits if the sender and receiver initially
share local hidden variables. Specifically, a communication of 2.19 bits is
sufficient on average for the classical teleportation of a qubit, when
restricted to von Neumann measurements. The generalization to

On the receiver pays principle
This paper extends the theory of network competition between telecommunications operators by allowing receivers to derive a surplus from receiving calls (call externality) and to affect the volume of communications by hanging up (receiver sovereignty). We investigate the extent to which receiver charges can lead to an internalization of the calling externality. When the receiver charge and the termination (access) charge are both regulated, there exists an e±cient equilibrium. Effciency requires a termination discount. When reception charges are market determined, it is optimal for each operator to set the prices for emission and reception at their off-net costs. For an appropriately chosen termination charge, the symmetric equilibrium is again effcient.
