A coachesâ perspective on the contribution of anthropometry, physical performance, and motor coordination in racquet sports
Differences and similarities between table tennis and other racquet sports exist, but are not well documented in the literature, in spite of the relevance for talent identification. In this study we aimed at identifying the key characteristics of table tennis in comparison with tennis and badminton based upon a survey in coaches. A total of 177 licensed coaches from all across the world and with diverse professional backgrounds completed a survey on anthropometric measures, physical performance, and motor coordination skills. On a scale from 1 to 10, coaches indicated to what extent a talent characteristic was important for their sport. MANOVA identified key differences as well as similarities between all three racquet sports and a subsequent discriminant analysis allocated coaches correctly for table tennis, tennis, and badminton 81.01%, 55.6%, and 71.4% respectively. Our results show that table tennis and other racquet sport coaches are well aware of differences between the racquet sports and also the importance and value of testing and assortment of skill components. These findings can assist coaches in future talent orientation and transfer in racquet sports
Positive attitudes towards racquet sport of primary school teachers
The aim of this study was to know the attitudes towards racquet sports in Spanish primary school teachers. Eighty one teachers from Zaragoza participated in this study, filling out the scale Positive attitudes towards racquet sport of the validated Table Tennis Attitudes Questionnaire. The internal consistency of this scale was measured with the Cronbach alpha coefficient. The results indicate Md=2.19 (SD=0.38) in this scale. The 27.2% of the teachers have never done one training course of this kind of sports, being the badminton the most studied sport. However, the teachers have mainly badminton teaching material. This study shows which is the prevalence of the racquet sports in the teacher programs. Statistically significant relationships were found between the studies of the teachers or the kind of the school, and the attitudes towards racquet sport. The results of this study suggest us that there have to be more educative programs to implementation racquet sports
Toward next generation coaching tools for court based racquet sports
Even with todayâs advances in automatic indexing of multimedia content, existing coaching tools for court sports lack the ability to automatically index a competitive match into key events. This paper proposes an automatic event indexing and event retrieval system
for tennis, which can be used to coach from beginners upwards.
Event indexing is possible using either visual or inertial sensing, with the latter potentially providing system portability. To achieve maximum performance in event indexing, multi-sensor data integration is implemented, where data from both sensors is merged to automatically index key tennis events. A complete event retrieval
system is also presented to allow coaches to build advanced queries which existing sports coaching solutions cannot facilitate without an inordinate amount of manual indexing

BLS Spotlight on Statistics: Sports and Exercise
[Excerpt]What percentage of people (aged 15 years and older) who live in the United States participated in sports and exercise activities on an average day in recent years? About 16 percent. In comparison, consider that the number of people who watched television on an average day is roughly five times larger. These charts, which display data from the American Time Use Survey, take a closer look at people who spend time in sports and exercise activities
Enterprise in the sports industry - business simulation & engagement
The framework that we would like to develop is based on a hierarchy that places the student experience as a priority linked closely to subject development and research, knowledge transfer and third stream income generation and value added in this priority order. It is based on the principle that we can tap into the latent potential of our staff and students more fully if we stay close to what we do best and think clearly about our priorities and focus on strengths. This process is supported by Drucker (2002:123) who states that âPurposeful, systematic innovation begins with the analysis of the opportunitiesâ and it is the various modular opportunities that have parallel learning themes (finance, marketing and enterprise) that will support the relevance of this scheme and enhance its relevance and understanding to students. We would like to engage students in the âreal-worldâ and enhance their appreciation and learning of business, marketing and enterprise the BAHSBM students would like to develop a new initiative. This initiative would be focused on the development of a real âliveâ business. This would be facilitated, directed, and managed by the course team and their students. Its sole purpose would be to act as an Enterprise and Business Unit, which would assist students to plan, develop and implement funding and pursue enterprise ventures and business ideas and. E.G: The launch of the âAcademic Team Wearâ initiative for the BAHSBM students and staff. In fact, students are also encouraged to develop their personal business and enterprise skills such as; Skills: Problem solving, Creativity, Persuasiveness, Planning, Negotiating and Decision Making (Bill, 2009:128
Eyewear protection
Sports-related eye injuries increased more than 100% in the last three years. More significant is the fact thai nearly 90% could have been prevented had the athletes been wearing protective eyewear. A key to getting athletes to wear proper and protective eyewear is education. Educating not only the athletes, but coaches, parents and others involved in athletic activities is of paramount importance by the sports practitioner, because an eye injury can be very serious and have permanent consequences
Physical Activity in Secondary School Pupils: Headline Indicators 2014
In 2013, GoWell East commenced a cohort study of physical activity among secondary school
pupils in Glasgow. The study will run from 2013 to 2017, following a group of pupils in six
Glasgow secondary schools throughout their school careers from S1 to S5. The study tracks
pupilsâ participation in physical activity, including sports, as well as other types of activity
(including travel to and from school), during their school time and leisure time, during the
week and at the weekend. The research is done by asking pupils to complete the Youth
Physical Activity Questionnaire (YPAQ)1
.  A group of S5 pupils were also asked to complete
the survey in 2013 in order to provide a benchmark with which to compare the S1 study
cohort when they reach S5 in 2017
