Study of Pupil Personnel Ratios, Services, and Programs in California
Gray, Elsner, and Poynton present a brief overview and analysis of Assembly Bill 722. The authors provide a summary of the key components of the study including the need for pupil support services, effective pupil support services and programs, and ratios of pupil-to-pupil support personnel. They offer an additional analysis of implications for future practice, including a critique of the reported effectiveness of the pupil programs, but lack of access for most students given the high pupil to personnel ratio
Diffraction Analysis of 2-D Pupil Mapping for High-Contrast Imaging
Pupil-mapping is a technique whereby a uniformly-illuminated input pupil,
such as from starlight, can be mapped into a non-uniformly illuminated exit
pupil, such that the image formed from this pupil will have suppressed
sidelobes, many orders of magnitude weaker than classical Airy ring
intensities. Pupil mapping is therefore a candidate technique for coronagraphic
imaging of extrasolar planets around nearby stars. Unlike most other
high-contrast imaging techniques, pupil mapping is lossless and preserves the
full angular resolution of the collecting telescope. So, it could possibly give
the highest signal-to-noise ratio of any proposed single-telescope system for
detecting extrasolar planets. Prior analyses based on pupil-to-pupil
ray-tracing indicate that a planet fainter than 10^{-10} times its parent star,
and as close as about 2 lambda/D, should be detectable. In this paper, we
describe the results of careful diffraction analysis of pupil mapping systems.
These results reveal a serious unresolved issue. Namely, high-contrast pupil
mappings distribute light from very near the edge of the first pupil to a broad
area of the second pupil and this dramatically amplifies diffraction-based edge
effects resulting in a limiting attainable contrast of about 10^{-5}. We hope

High Speed Pupillometry
Measuring the parameters of the pupil in the human eye has become increasingly important in customised refractive surgery and other eye care applications. High-speed and high resolution CMOS cameras can be used to study the dynamics of eyelids and their interaction with the pupil at different illumination levels. We consider the problem of measuring the pupil size from a high-speed video. In particular, we develop a novel algorithm for setting intra-lid sectors for the detection and estimation of the pupil and iris outlines from a sequence of digital images. An application of the proposed methodology to the estimation of the pupil parameters during an eye blink is given
Pupil participation in Scottish schools: final report
This research was commissioned by Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS) to evaluate the nature of pupil participation in primary and secondary schools across Scotland. The specific objectives of the research were:
<p>· To describe what school staff and pupils understand by the term âpupil participationâ.</p>
<p>· To describe the range and usage of pupil participation mechanisms employed in schools.</p>
<p>· To describe how school staff respect and respond to pupilsâ views and ideas, and those of the wider community.</p>
<p>· To identify the characteristics of schools and classrooms that facilitate effective pupil participation.</p>
<p>· To identify possible barriers to the development of pupil participation in schools and to make suggestions about how these can be overcome.</p>
<p>· To capture examples of effective practice of pupil participation.</p>
<p>· To make suggestions about how pupil participation can help support the implementation of the Curriculum for Excellence.</p>
Pupil mobility, attainment and progress in secondary school
This paper is the second of two articles arising from a study of the association between pupil mobility and attainment in national tests and examinations in an inner London borough. The first article (Strand & Demie, 2006) examined the association of pupil mobility with attainment and progress during primary school. It concluded that pupil mobility had little impact on performance in national tests at age 11, once pupilsâ prior attainment at age 7 and other pupil background factors such as age, sex, special educational needs, stage of fluency in English and socio-economic disadvantage were taken into account. The present article reports the results for secondary schools (age 11-16). The results indicate that pupil mobility continues to have a significant negative association with performance in public examinations at age 16, even after including statistical controls for prior attainment at age 11 and other pupil background factors. Possible reasons for the contrasting results across school phases are explored. The implications for policy and further research are discussed
