An exploratory study of the impacts on gardening to older people : case study to Tsuen Wan golden organic farming project

Aims This was an exploratory study to investigate how gardening could enhance and strengthen the physical health, psychological well-being and social networks of older participants. Design and participants Qualitative research methodology was adopted in this study. Interviews were conducted on ten elderly people. In order to check and confirm the information collected in the in-depth interviews and provide more useful information for our study, four older participants and four volunteer workers were invited to join our two focus group discussions (N=8) upon the completion of the in-depth interview. Data was collected between March and July of 2004. Findings In this study, we found that elderly participants benefited more in their psychological well-being and the enlargement of their social networks. On the side of psychological well-being, many older participants expressed that they felt happier and it brought a greater meaning to their life. Gardening distracted them from thinking negative thoughts, and helped them set goals as well as gain achievements in life. Another significant change was their enlargement of social networks, we found that the ties between older participants and their family members were strengthened. Moreover, elderly participants made new friends during gardening with both elderly participants and voluntary workers

Do classical configurations produce Confinement?

We show that certain classical SU(2) pure gauge configurations give rise to a non-zero string tension. We then investigate cooled configurations generated by Monte Carlo simulations on the lattice and find similar properties. Why does gravitational radiation produce vorticity?

We calculate the vorticity of world--lines of observers at rest in a Bondi--Sachs frame, produced by gravitational radiation, in a general Sachs metric. The traditional view of attrition and abrasion as the major agents producing glacial debris is considered in the light of recent work by engineering geologists and geomorphologists. The decomposition of certain rock types when affected by frost action leads to the concept of rock deterioration within the body of the glacier. It seems that differing rock types with varying responses to low temperature conditions would produce a heterogeneous mixture of particle size such as is usually termed glacial till. Observations in recent work on rock stability emphasise the importance of clay minerals and their mode of occurrence. Organic Produce: Who's Eating it? A Demographic Profile of Organic Produce Consumers

The organic market sector is one of the fastest growing food sectors in the United States with growth rates in organic food sales averaging 17 percent per year between 1998 and 2006. The largest segment within the organic market is fresh produce, comprising 34 percent of retail sales in 2006. To date, few published studies utilize consumer purchase information to understand which demographic factors influence the purchase of organic produce. This analysis focuses on household produce purchases in 2006 from the Nielsen Homescan Dataset. Assuming that household produce purchases are made in a two step process, a Heckman two-stage model is utilized to examine the factors that influence the probability a consumer will buy organic produce, and which factors influence the household share of organic produce purchased. Results show households with high levels of education and income are more likely to purchase organic pre-packaged produce, while the probability of purchasing organic fruits and vegetables decreases amongst African Americans.Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,
