Gloria Anzaldúa’s Mexican Genealogy: From Pelados and Pachucos to New Mestizas
This essay examines Gloria Anzaldúa’s critical appropriation of two Mexican philosophers in the writing of Borderlands/La Frontera: Samuel Ramos and Octavio Paz. We argue that although neither of these authors is cited in her seminal work, Anzaldúa had them both in mind through the writing process and that their ideas are present in the text itself. Through a genealogical reading of Borderlands/La Frontera, and aided by archival research, we demonstrate how Anzaldúa’s philosophical vision of the “new mestiza” is a critical continuation of the broader tradition known as la filosofía de lo mexicano, which flourished during a golden age of Mexican philosophy (1910–1960). Our aim is to open new directions in Latinx and Latin American philosophy by presenting Anzaldúa’s Borderlands/La Frontera as a profound scholarly encounter with two classic works of Mexican philosophy, Ramos’ Profile of Man and Culture in Mexico and Paz’s The Labyrinth of Solitude
Editor\u27s Notes
Since the passing of two high-profile state legislative bills aimed at Arizona\u27s Latino residents this past April, the significance of ethnicity for American citizens has once again surfaced as a topic for national debate. Whether to legitimize, or just as frequently deny, what defines American identity, the question and meaning of one\u27s ethnic roots continues to be a contested matter for many Americans. In particular, HB 2281, a bill targeting the restriction of ethnic studies curricula in Arizona\u27s K- 12 educational system, has prompted accusations that Ethnic Studies scholarship and teachings work against a unified sense of nationhood by encouraging separatism and anti-American sentiment. Yet, as most Ethnic Studies proponents would counter, it is instead the artificial notion of a monolithic American identity, predicated upon a hegemonic rendering of what it is to be an American, that promotes divisions and distrust within a nation. In either case, the ambivalence over how to read the ambiguities of race and ethnicity implicit in U.S. citizenry underscore the ongoing need to address them. As such, the six authors featured in this issue provide fresh and thoughtful examinations of how race and ethnicity complicate understandings of self. Although diverse in content, the articles collectively consider the effects of how the ambivalence of ethnic origins both expand and challenge the meaning of American identity

In the middle of both "Sleepy Lagoon" case as well as the "Zoot Suit riots", he ponders the "Pachuco" image. In this essay it is analyzed women's participation side by side with the Zoot Suiters. [Review of] Carl Gutierrez-Jones. Rethinking the Borderlands: Between Chicano Culture and Legal Discourse
In this ambitious book, Carl Gutierrez-Jones musters ideas from Critical Race Studies, Critical Legal Studies, and literary scholarship to explicate the relationship between Chicanos and the law. Contrary to the notion that American jurisprudence is a neutral, value-free institution, the author argues that, as Chicano and especially Chicana artists have depicted, the legal system\u27s emphasis on individual responsibility ignores the economic and social milieu entangling Chicanos. The broad scholarship, incisive analysis, and careful reasoning make this book a valuable contribution to our understanding of the Chicano experience
Reviving DIY: the importance of do it youself to the portuguese alternative rock scene
The approach of DIY music careers lies in the premise that music is a unifyingpole of activities, clustering a diversity of practices and lifestylesaround it. The analysis of musical production is usually based on an entrepreneurialperspective about creative workers and, specifically, aboutthe musicians. In this context, it can be useful to revisit one of the corevalues of the punk subculture, the DIY ethos, based on empowerment, ontaking possession of the means of production, as an alternative to mainstreamproduction circuits. Starting from the case of three projects - FilhoÚnico, Haus and Hey, Pachuco! - we explore the relevance of do it yourselflogics and procedures in the construction and maintenance of musicalcareers in the alternative rock, considering their impact on Lisbon metropolitanareas music alternative scenes
