    Morpes: A Model for Personalized Rendering of Web Content on Mobile Devices

    With the tremendous growth in the information communication sector, the mobile phones have become the prime information communication devices. The convergence of traditional telephony with the modern web enabled communication in the mobile devices has made the communication much effective and simpler. As mobile phones are becoming the crucial source of accessing the contents of the World Wide Web which was originally designed for personal computers, has opened up a new challenge of accommodating the web contents in to the smaller mobile devices. This paper proposes an approach towards building a model for rendering the web pages in mobile devices. The proposed model is based on a multi-dimensional web page segment evaluation model. The incorporation of personalization in the proposed model makes the rendering user-centric. The proposed model is validated with a prototype implementation.Comment: 10 Pages, 2 Figure

    Development of personal area network (PAN) for mobile robot using bluetooth transceiver

    The work presents the concept of providing a Personal Area Network (PAN) for microcontroller based mobile robots using Bluetooth transceiver. With the concept of replacing cable, low cost, low power consumption and communication range between 10m to 100m, Bluetooth is suitable for communication between mobile robots since most mobile robots are powered by batteries and have high mobility. The network aimed to support real-time control of up to two mobile robots from a master mobile robot through communication using Bluetooth transceiver. If a fast network radio link is implemented, a whole new world of possibilities is opened in the research of robotics control and Artificial Intelligence (AI) research works, sending real time image and information. Robots could communicate through obstacles or even through walls. Bluetooth Ad Hoc topology provides a simple communication between devices in close by forming PAN. A system contained of both hardware and software is designed to enable the robots to form a PAN and communicating, sharing information. Three microcontroller based mobile robots are built for this research work. Bluetooth Protocol Stack and mobile robot control architecture is implemented on a single microcontroller chip. The PAN enabled a few mobile robots to communicate with each other to complete a given task. The wireless communication between mobile robots is reliable based from the result of experiments carried out. Thus this is a platform for multi mobile robots system and Ad Hoc networking system. Results from experiments show that microcontroller based mobile robots can easily form a Bluetooth PAN and communicate with each other

    An empirical study of power consumption of Web-based communications in mobile phones

    Currently, mobile devices are the most popular pervasive computing device, and they are becoming the primer way for Web access. Energy is a critical resource in such pervasive computing devices, being network communication one of the primary energy consuming operations in mobile apps. Indeed, web-based communication is the most used, but also energy demanding. So, mobile web developers should be aware of how much energy consumes the different web-based communication alternatives. The goal of this paper is to measure and compare the energy consumption of three asynchronous Web-based methods in mobile devices. Our experiments consider three different Web applications models that allow a web server to push data to a browser: Polling, Long Polling and WebSockets. The obtained results are analyzed to get more accurate understanding of the impact in energy consumption of a mobile browser for each of these three methods. The utility of these experiments is to show developers what are the factors that influence the energy consumption when different web-based asynchronous communication is used. With this information mobile web developers could reduce the power consumption of web applications on mobile devices, by selecting the most appropriate method for asynchronous server communication.MUniversidad de Málaga.     WIRELESS ADVERTISING: A STUDY OF MOBILE PHONE USERS

    Using a qualitative methodology, this study attempts to provide a general framework of the functions of mobile communication, and to identify the specific preferences of mobile phone users regarding the commercial messages received on their personal devices. Research objectives: (1) To identify the specific characteristics of mobile communication as perceived by mobile users; (2) to define and analyze the functions of wireless communication as perceived by mobile phone users; and (3) to investigate users' preference regarding the content of commercial wireless communication. Previous research: Bauer et al. (2002) identified time, location, information and personalization as relevant acceptance factors for mobile advertising. Barwise and Strong (2002) developed a conceptual model, arguing that social norms, user's motives, mode, time, location and personal characteristics will affect the processing of mobile information by consumers. Tsang et al. (2004) evidenced the influence of entertainment, informativeness and irritation, while Bauer et al. (2005) argued that consumer attitudes are influenced by perceived information, entertainment, and social utility. In a similar study, Xu and Gutierrez (2006) tested the effect of entertainment, irritation, informativeness, credibility and personalization on the attitudes of Chinese consumers. Research methodology: First, a series of academic and practical articles and reports have been accessed in order to assess the existing knowledge on this topic. Second, five focus groups have been organized with six mobile phone users, aged between 20 and 40 years old. Each focus group comprised an equal number of male and female participants. The focus groups lasted between 45 and 60 minutes and addressed three main issues: the specific characteristics of the mobile phones as a commercial communication media, the functions of mobile phone communication, and the specific preferences of mobile phones users regarding the content of commercial messages. Findings: The participants demonstrated an active attitude regarding mobile advertising, which they think it has the potential to revolutionize the practice of commercial communication, by focusing more on consumer's personal needs and circumstances. Implications: This transformation cannot be realized without increasing the interactive control of mobile phone users' over the functionality and content advertising messages. Although the required technology already exists, it seems necessary to create new applications that can combine the advantages of customer-, product- and location- centered communication. Original contribution: Previous studies often used an analytical approach, highlighting specific variables regarding consumer perception or technology adoption.     Quad-band internal mobile phone antenna

    A novel internal, quad-band antenna placed inside a ‘foldable’ type of Mobile Phone is presented. Its structure consists of a helical and a monopole element exciting two broad frequency bands. Using a simple matching circuit the proposed antenna covers several frequency bands including the Global System for Mobile Communication (890-960 MHz), Digital Communication System (1710-1880 MHz), Personal Communication System (1850-1990 MHz) and Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (1920-2170 MHz). It achieves a Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) of less than three across all frequency bands with total radiation efficiency of more than 50%. Its novel design and structure occupies only 1.8 cm3 of volume making this antenna very small and very suitable for internal use inside mobile terminals
