Naming and Portraying Indigenous peoples in the New Brunswick Press
Speech conveys representations, carried by words, circulated through discourse and transmitted in media messages. Naming takes on particular importance in the construction of these representations, and marks the quality of a relationship. Representations of and relationships with the Aboriginal peoples of Canada are intimately related to the processes of categorization and stereotyping. What do people of European descent in New Brunswick call Aboriginal peoples in their press? What relationship quality does naming reveal? This paper seeks to answer these questions by analyzing articles in two New Brunswick newspapers between 1999 and 2019, l’Acadie Nouvelle and the Moncton Times and Transcrip

A linguistic and discursive view on climate change discourse
As climate change debate is rapidly evolving, we hear a multitude of voices: different actors are getting involved around addressing the challenges, setting priorities for new knowledge, and framing key questions and actions. Whose voices are these? And how are they “translating” each other’s knowledge? In order to answer these questions, it is necessary to study how climate knowledge, which has its origin in “objective” scientific discourse, is transmitted to public and political argumentative or action-oriented discourse. How do actors at different levels construct their climate politics linguistically? The interdisciplinary research project to which this paper is related aims to unpack this polyphonic discourse. In the present contribution, an analysis of a document produced by the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is undertaken: the “Summary for policymakers” with the main IPCC findings from 2007. This document takes climate research findings as a point of departure and puts an emphasis on the need of adaptation and political action
Logometry and Artificial Intelligence (deep learning) applied to political texts make it possible to identify in Emmanuel Macron's speeches the linguistic borrowings he contracted from his predecessors at the Palais de l’Elysée (de Gaulle, Pompidou, Giscard, Mitterrand, Chirac, Sarkozy and Hollande). The most important borrowings, which are around the work value and enunciative around the exhibition of “I” and "I want", are statistically related to Nicolas Sarkozy
Discourse Analysis of Policies to Prevent Violent Radicalization in Ten European Countries and their Impact on Educational Systems
After the 9/11 attacks, Western societies and institutions try to respond to terrorist attacks. The fight against radicalization has gained prominence on international agendas. The OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) proposes a new learning objective: global competence. This research analyses how the attitudes of global competence, are reflected in government plans for the prevention of radicalization in tenEuropean countries: Spain, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, France, the United Kingdom and Finland. A lexicometric analysis was performed using clustering techniques. Iramuteq program is used. A quantitative analysis was also carried out on a qualitative data corpus to facilitate comparative analysis. While European socio-educational policies are, theoretically, a fundamental pillar in the pursuit of integration, in practice, the network of correspondence shows a policy focused on the threat of terrorism, where police intervention is prioritized, and the role of education is insignificant. We conclude that policies for the prevention of radicalization in Europe do not reflect the characteristics that define democratic, interculturally competent citizenship and are not aligned with global competence. We suggest promoting transversality and unity of policies which encourage integration and social cohesion and reassessing the value of schools as a proactive measure for inclusion.
This paper addresses the question of American presidential debates from the ESP viewpoint and considers how linguistic quantitative analyses may help to identify some of their characteristics. The corpus consists of 22 debates (only face-to-face encounters) and covers eight election years since 1960. The quantitative analyses lie within the framework of logometry (Mayaffre 2004) and are carried out with the software Hyperbase; in particular, they are grounded on the lemma frequency lists of the corpus and on the lexical specificities of the candidates. The studies show that presidential debates share some discursive and interactional similarities with conversations and belong to a hybrid discourse genre (Fairclough 1995). They also indicate that intersubjective relations are of particular importance within the cognitive frame (Chilton 2004) of the debates. The paper highlights the fact that linguistic quantitative analyses may contribute to ESP research since they help to study discourse phenomena from several linguistic perspectives
This article aims at studying the discourse of journalists moderating the political debate Question Time. Focusing on the discourse of participants whose role is not to speak but to stimulate the debate may seem pointless. Journalists, however, have to articulate 3 orders of discourse (political, media, ordinary life). It is therefore fascinating to try to identify what positioning is achieved. Do moderators side with ordinary citizens whose discourse they relay or with the Institution? Such is the question guiding the study. The adopted approach is both qualitative, considering discourse genres, enunciative positionings as well as quantitative (logometric), enabling a relative quantification of the strategies at work. The analysis reveals the extreme diversity, not to say ambiguity inherent to the role of debate moderator (articulation of turns, handling of topical sequences). The two moderators scrutinized (Peter Sissons, 1992 and David Dimbleby 1997) show that the mode of the opposition plays a key role to determine variations in terms of strategy. It is also argued that the wider socio-cultural, political context is to be considered in the interpretation of results
Discourse of Medea: Logometry and Euripides' "Medea"
peer reviewedThis article proposes a study of the speech of Medea in Euripides’ Medea in comparison with the speeches of the other characters of this tragedy. Our purpose is to define,
thanks to logometry, the specificities of the speech of Medea: does the heroine speak rather as a
woman or as a man? What are the links between discursive characterization and dramatic construction of the character? In this way, we shall try to understand how and why the speeches
of Medea and Jason present numerous similarities and which are the consequences on the
development of the tragic action of this famous play
The LASLA (Laboratoire d’Analyse Statistique des Langues Anciennes), at the University of Liege, has been annotating Latin and Greek texts since 1962. Its results were published in Indices verborum. The laboratory has also been collaborating to develop statistical tools, as HYPERBASE. This program has been recently adapted to search the Greek texts (lexicon and morphosyntax). It is now possible to apply logometry concepts to Greek corpus. This paper aims to test these methods on Euripides’ Medea. It helps to show how to study discourses’ characterisation of the characters’ play and to answer to the following questions: Is Medea speaking in a female way? Which is the role of the nurse? What is the Jason’s responsibility in the drama
