    Predicting Emerald Ash Borer, \u3ci\u3eAgrilus Planipennis\u3c/i\u3e (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), Landing Behavior on Unwounded Ash

    Detection of emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), an invasive forest pest, is difficult in low density populations war- ranting continual development of various trapping techniques and protocols. Understanding and predicting landing behavior of A. planipennis may assist in the further development of trapping techniques and improvement of trapping protocols for widespread survey programs in North America. Three multiple regression models were developed using ash tree vigor and crown light exposure to predict the landing behavior of A. planipennis. These models were then used to predict the landing density of A. planipennis at separate sites and in separate years. Successful prediction of A. planipennis capture density at the test sites was limited. Even though the multiple regression models were not effective at predicting landing behavior of A. planipennis, tree characteristics were used to predict the likelihood of A. planipennis landing. Trees predicted as having high likelihood of landing had 3.5 times as many A. planipennis adults/m2 on stem traps than trees predicted as having low likelihood of landing. While the landing density of A. planipennis may not be efficiently predicted, the utility of these predictions may be in the form of identifying trees with a high likelihood of A. planipennis landing. Those high likelihood trees may assist in improving existing detection programs and techniques in North American forests

    The design and development of a shape memory alloy based smart landing gear for aerospace vehicles is based on a13; novel design approach. The smart landing gear comprises a landing beam, an arch, and a superelastic nickeltitanium shape memory alloy element. This design is of a generic nature and is applicable to a certain class of light13; aerospace vehicles. In this paper a specixFB01;c case of the shape memory alloy based smart landing gear design and13; development applicable to a radio controlled semirigid airship (radio controlled blimp) of 320 m3 volume is13; presented.Ajudicious combination of carbon xFB01;ber reinforced plastic for the landing beam, cane (naturally occurring13; plant product) wrapped with carbon xFB01;ber reinforced plastic for the arch, and superelastic shape memory alloy is13; used in the development. An appropriate sizing of the arch and landing beam is arrived at to meet the dual requirement of low weight and high-energy dissipation while ndergoing x201C;large elasticx201D; (large nonlinear recoverable13; elastic strain) deformations to ensure soft landings when the airship impacts the ground. The soft landing is required13; to ensure that shock and vibration are minimized (to protect the sensitive payload). The inherently large energydissipating character of the superelastic shape memory alloy element in the tensile mode of deformation and the superior elastic bounce back features of the landing gear provide the ideal solution.Anonlinear analysis based on the classical and xFB01;nite element method approach is followed to analyze the structure. Necessary experiments and tests have been conducted to check the veracity of the design. Good correlation has been found between the analyses and testing. This exercise is intended to provide an alternate method of developing an efxFB01;cient landing gear with satisfactory geometry for a x201C;certain class of light aerospace vehiclesx201D; such as airships, rotorcraft, and other light unmanned air vehicles

    A review of recent perspectives on biomechanical risk factors associated with anterior cruciate ligament injury

    There is considerable evidence to support a number of biomechanical risk factors associated with non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. This paper aimed to review these biomechanical risk factors and highlight future directions relating to them. Current perspectives investigating trunk position and relationships between strength, muscle activity and biomechanics during landing/cutting highlight the importance of increasing hamstring muscle force during dynamic movements through altering strength, muscle activity, muscle length and contraction velocity. In particular, increased trunk flexion during landing/cutting and greater hamstring strength are likely to increase hamstring muscle force during landing and cutting which have been associated with reduced ACL injury risk. Decision making has also been shown to influence landing biomechanics and should be considered when designing tasks to assess landing/cutting biomechanics. Coaches should therefore promote hamstring strength training and active trunk flexion during landing and cutting in an attempt to reduce ACL injury risk.Peer reviewe

The technology areas include: ground handling simulator, antiskid braking systems, space shuttle nose-gear shimmy, active control landing gear, wire brush skid landing gear, air cushion landing systems, tire/surface friction characteristics, tire mechanical properties, tire-tread materials, powered wheels for taxiing, and crosswind landing gear. This paper deals mainly with the programs on tire-tread materials, powered wheel taxiing, air cushion landing systems, and crosswind landing gear research with particular emphasis on previously unreported results of recently completed flight tests.     Magnetorheological landing gear: 1. A design methodology

    Aircraft landing gears are subjected to a wide range of excitation conditions, which result in conflicting damping requirements. A novel solution to this problem is to implement semi-active damping using magnetorheological (MR) fluids. This paper presents a design methodology that enables an MR landing gear to be optimized, both in terms of its damping and magnetic circuit performance, whilst adhering to stringent packaging constraints. Such constraints are vital in landing gear, if MR technology is to be considered as feasible in commercial applications. The design approach focuses on the impact or landing phase of an aircraft's flight, where large variations in sink speed, angle of attack and aircraft mass makes an MR device potentially very attractive. In this study, an equivalent MR model of an existing aircraft landing gear is developed. This includes a dynamic model of an MR shock strut, which accounts for the effects of fluid compressibility. This is important in impulsive loading applications such as landing gear, as fluid compression will reduce device controllability. Using the model, numerical impact simulations are performed to illustrate the performance of the optimized MR shock strut, and hence the effectiveness of the proposed design methodology.     Learjet Model 55 Wing Analysis with Landing Loads

    The NASTRAN analysis was used to determine the impact of new landing loads on the Learjet Model 55 wing. These new landing loads were the result of a performance improvement effort to increase the landing weight of the aircraft to 18,000 lbs. from 17,000 lbs. and extend the life of the tires and brakes by incorporating larger tires and heavy duty brakes. Landing loads for the original 17,000 lb. airplane landing configuration were applied to the full airplane NASTRAN model. The analytical results were correlated with the strain gage data from the original landing load static tests. The landing loads for the 18,000 lb. airplane were applied to the full airplane NASTRAN model, and a comparison was made with the original Model 55 data. The results of this comparison enable Learjet to determine the difference in stress distribution in the wing due to these two different sets of landing loads
