The aim of this work is to analyse the carbon distribution in austenite during isothermal bainite formation and the incomplete reaction phenomenon by means of X-ray diffraction analysis and atom-probe tomography in high silicon, manganese alloyed steels. Results will provide new evidence on the temporary cessation of bainitic ferrite formation at abnormally low transformation temperatures. The authors acknowledge the support of Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnologı´a Plan Nacional de I+D+I (2004–2007), funding this research under the contracts PTR95-0995 and MAT2007–63873. Research at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory SHaRE User Facility was sponsored by the Scientific User Facilities Division, Office of Basic Energy Sciences, US Department of Energy.Peer reviewe
