    Curriculum Mapping: Bringing Evidence-Based Frameworks to Legal Education

    This article explains the concept of curriculum mapping as used in the education profession and explains how it was applied in a mapping initiative at the NSU Law Center. Curriculum mapping is a process by which education professionals “document their own curriculum, then share and examine each other’s curriculums for gaps, overlaps, redundancies and new learning, creating a coherent, consistent, curriculum within and across areas that is ultimately aligned to standards and responsive to student data and other initiatives.” While this process has been used for many years in other areas of education, it is fairly new to legal education. This article explains the concepts, puts them into the context of other reforms currently happening in legal education, and through documenting our own experiences, gives a step-by-step primer on how to bring this useful tool to any law school to make evidence-based changes to a law school curriculum

    Mind Mapping: A Strategy to Promote Interprofessional Collaboration among Health Science Students

    Purpose/Background: This presentation will provide participants with an understanding of what mind mapping is and engage participants in a discussion and hands on experience of how mind mapping can be used to prepare students for interprofessional collaborative practice and integrate patient centered models of care. Managing a patient’s plan of care requires health care practitioners to share and integrate data in order to formulate a plan of care. How to engage with other disciplines is often developed during student’s clinical educational experiences. Assisting and engaging students during the academic portion are essential to prepare them for interprofessional collaborative practice. Mind Mapping is an innovative instructional strategy which focuses on integrating information using a 360 non-linear approach. Mind maps require learners to think not only in a curvilinear manner but also use visuospatial relationships which flow from a central concept. For students, using this 360 approach to explore and connect concepts and themes a rich environment for content integration emerges. Mind mapping is emerging as a positive teaching and learning strategy for health science students however there has been limited evidence supporting its efficacy in interprofessional education. Descriptions of Program Mind mapping can be infused at several points within an interprofessional curriculum. Faculty can model for students their own integration of knowledge by creating and sharing their mind maps. Alternately, IPE student groups can create mind maps and thereby engage in self-directed active learning. These options provide rich experiences for students to work on integrating content knowledge across disciplines for the development of robust interprofessional patient-centered care. Preliminary Result on Mind Mapping used in an interprofessional curriculum as well as students’ perceptions will be shared. Conclusion /Relevance to interprofessional education or practice Using a mind maps non-linear approach to learning provides may further aid student’s ability to critically reflect upon and analyze the necessary information, to develop and modify a patient’s interprofessional plan of care. This model of infusion of mind maps can be utilized in interprofessional curricular to prepare students for collaborative practice. Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to: describe the tenets associated with the development of a mind map for IPE discuss a model of infusion of mind maps for interprofessional education and collaborations recognize how to integrate mind maps into their interprofessional curricular model

    Prudentia: a medical school\u27s solution to curriculum mapping and curriculum management

    The School of Medicine (SoM) at the University of Notre Dame Australia has developed a curriculum mapping system called Prudentia. This web-based application allows users to explore curriculum across all four years of the MBBS to determine what and when students are expected to learn, and if there are any anomalies evident within this data. A five-level hierarchical, outcomes-based curriculum framework underpins Prudentia ranging from the macro Australian Medical Council (AMC) Student Outcomes Statements to the micro daily learning objectives. Data in all five levels of the framework can be mapped and constructive alignment between the outcomes, instructional and assessment methods can also be investigated. While Prudentia is a user-friendly application, it is only as good as the curriculum framework which underpins it. This paper discusses the critical questions that were pivotal in developing the SoM’s curriculum framework, upon which a robust curriculum mapping system was eventually built

    The development and initial validation of the Perinatal Mental Health Awareness scale in student midwives

    Background & aim: Perinatal mental health problems have been demonstrated to impact upon maternal, and fetal/child outcomes. Despite the global evidence and a policy-driven responsibility for identification of these problems, research demonstrates that student midwives/midwives lack knowledge and confidence to assess, identify, and manage them. A similar context is evident for learning disabilities, despite the holistic care philosophy of midwifery. A brief assessment tool to identify knowledge and confidence defecits and strengths within a holistic care framework could support curriculum development. This study sought to develop a Perinatal Mental Health Awareness scale and evaluate its psychometric properties in student midwives.Methods: We employed a cross-sectional and exploratory instrument development and evaluation design to determine the measurement veracity of the new scale.Results: The scale demonstrated good psychometric properties, revealing three subscales mapping onto (i) mental health symptoms, (ii) physical/medical issues and (iii) learning disability. Results indicated a clear differentiation in scores across the subscales, indicating comparative deficits in mental health domains.Conclusion: Our findings facilitate confidence in the psychometric robustness of the measure. The scale enables student midwives to assess and compare different domains of midwifery practice, in line with a holistic model of midwifery care. A focus on physical health in midwifery education appears to disadvantage knowledge and confidence for managing mental health problems in a midwifery context. This valuable finding highlights the potential need for curriculum rebalancing. The measure offers the opportunity to assess and develop curriculum/training provision and monitor the effectiveness of subsequent curricular developments

    Undergraduate teaching in geriatric medicine: mapping the British Geriatrics Society undergraduate curriculum to Tomorrow's Doctors 2009

    Introduction: in 2008, the British Geriatrics Society (BGS) developed the Recommended Undergraduate Curriculum in Geriatric Medicine. This was subsequently mapped to the second edition of Tomorrows' Doctors (TD2, 2003). Following the publication of the third edition of Tomorrow's Doctors in 2009 (TD3), the mapping exercise was repeated to verify the extent to which the updated General Medical Council recommendations supported teaching in ageing and geriatric medicine. Method: we analysed TD3 and identified 48 aspects of its general guidance that were relevant to the teaching of medicine for older people. We then mapped these to the 2009 BGS curriculum. Results: the BGS curriculum was supported in full by TD3. However, learning outcomes relating to the interpretation and conduct of research in TD3 had no corresponding outcomes in the BGS curriculum. Conclusion: the BGS curriculum for medical undergraduates continues to provide a specific and complete list of learning objectives, all of which could help to operationalise the general statements made in TD3 with relation to ageing and geriatric medicine. Learning outcomes in research in frail older patients have been added following this mapping exercise
