    Semantic Web meets Web 2.0 (and vice versa): The Value of the Mundane for the Semantic Web

    Web 2.0, not the Semantic Web, has become the face of “the next generation Web” among the tech-literate set, and even among many in the various research communities involved in the Web. Perceptions in these communities of what the Semantic Web is (and who is involved in it) are often misinformed if not misguided. In this paper we identify opportunities for Semantic Web activities to connect with the Web 2.0 community; we explore why this connection is of significant benefit to both groups, and identify how these connections open valuable research opportunities “in the real” for the Semantic Web effort

    A gap analysis of Internet-of-Things platforms

    We are experiencing an abundance of Internet-of-Things (IoT) middleware solutions that provide connectivity for sensors and actuators to the Internet. To gain a widespread adoption, these middleware solutions, referred to as platforms, have to meet the expectations of different players in the IoT ecosystem, including device providers, application developers, and end-users, among others. In this article, we evaluate a representative sample of these platforms, both proprietary and open-source, on the basis of their ability to meet the expectations of different IoT users. The evaluation is thus more focused on how ready and usable these platforms are for IoT ecosystem players, rather than on the peculiarities of the underlying technological layers. The evaluation is carried out as a gap analysis of the current IoT landscape with respect to (i) the support for heterogeneous sensing and actuating technologies, (ii) the data ownership and its implications for security and privacy, (iii) data processing and data sharing capabilities, (iv) the support offered to application developers, (v) the completeness of an IoT ecosystem, and (vi) the availability of dedicated IoT marketplaces. The gap analysis aims to highlight the deficiencies of today's solutions to improve their integration to tomorrow's ecosystems. In order to strengthen the finding of our analysis, we conducted a survey among the partners of the Finnish IoT program, counting over 350 experts, to evaluate the most critical issues for the development of future IoT platforms.     Information visualisation and data analysis using web mash-up systems

    A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophyThe arrival of E-commerce systems have contributed greatly to the economy and have played a vital role in collecting a huge amount of transactional data. It is becoming difficult day by day to analyse business and consumer behaviour with the production of such a colossal volume of data. Enterprise 2.0 has the ability to store and create an enormous amount of transactional data; the purpose for which data was collected could quite easily be disassociated as the essential information goes unnoticed in large and complex data sets. The information overflow is a major contributor to the dilemma. In the current environment, where hardware systems have the ability to store such large volumes of data and the software systems have the capability of substantial data production, data exploration problems are on the rise. The problem is not with the production or storage of data but with the effectiveness of the systems and techniques where essential information could be retrieved from complex data sets in a comprehensive and logical approach as the data questions are asked. Using the existing information retrieval systems and visualisation tools, the more specific questions are asked, the more definitive and unambiguous are the visualised results that could be attained, but when it comes to complex and large data sets there are no elementary or simple questions. Therefore a profound information visualisation model and system is required to analyse complex data sets through data analysis and information visualisation, to make it possible for the decision makers to identify the expected and discover the unexpected. In order to address complex data problems, a comprehensive and robust visualisation model and system is introduced. The visualisation model consists of four major layers, (i) acquisition and data analysis, (ii) data representation, (iii) user and computer interaction and (iv) results repositories. There are major contributions in all four layers but particularly in data acquisition and data representation. Multiple attribute and dimensional data visualisation techniques are identified in Enterprise 2.0 and Web 2.0 environment. Transactional tagging and linked data are unearthed which is a novel contribution in information visualisation. The visualisation model and system is first realised as a tangible software system, which is then validated through different and large types of data sets in three experiments. The first experiment is based on the large Royal Mail postcode data set. The second experiment is based on a large transactional data set in an enterprise environment while the same data set is processed in a non-enterprise environment. The system interaction facilitated through new mashup techniques enables users to interact more fluently with data and the representation layer. The results are exported into various reusable formats and retrieved for further comparison and analysis purposes. The information visualisation model introduced in this research is a compact process for any size and type of data set which is a major contribution in information visualisation and data analysis. Advanced data representation techniques are employed using various web mashup technologies. New visualisation techniques have emerged from the research such as transactional tagging visualisation and linked data visualisation.     Internet of Things Based Technology for Smart Home System: A Generic Framework

    Internet of Things (IoT) is a technology which enables computing devices, physical and virtual objects/devices to be connected to the internet so that users can control and monitor devices. The IoT offers huge potential for development of various applications namely: e-governance, environmental monitoring, military applications, infrastructure management, industrial applications, energy management, healthcare monitoring, home automation and transport systems. In this paper, the brief overview of existing frameworks for development of IoT applications, techniques to develop smart home applications using existing IoT frameworks, and a new generic framework for the development of IoTbasedsmart home system is presented. The proposed generic framework comprises various modules such as Auto-Configuration and Management, Communication Protocol, Auto-Monitoring and Control, and Objects Access Control. The architecture of the new generic framework and the functionality of various modules in the framework are also presented. The proposed generic framework is helpful for making every house as smart house to increase the comfort of inhabitants. Each of the components of generic framework is robust in nature in providing services at any time. The components of smart home system are designed to take care of various issues such as scalability, interoperability, device adaptability, security and privacy.     A Semantics-based User Interface Model for Content Annotation, Authoring and Exploration

    The Semantic Web and Linked Data movements with the aim of creating, publishing and interconnecting machine readable information have gained traction in the last years. However, the majority of information still is contained in and exchanged using unstructured documents, such as Web pages, text documents, images and videos. This can also not be expected to change, since text, images and videos are the natural way in which humans interact with information. Semantic structuring of content on the other hand provides a wide range of advantages compared to unstructured information. Semantically-enriched documents facilitate information search and retrieval, presentation, integration, reusability, interoperability and personalization. Looking at the life-cycle of semantic content on the Web of Data, we see quite some progress on the backend side in storing structured content or for linking data and schemata. Nevertheless, the currently least developed aspect of the semantic content life-cycle is from our point of view the user-friendly manual and semi-automatic creation of rich semantic content. In this thesis, we propose a semantics-based user interface model, which aims to reduce the complexity of underlying technologies for semantic enrichment of content by Web users. By surveying existing tools and approaches for semantic content authoring, we extracted a set of guidelines for designing efficient and effective semantic authoring user interfaces. We applied these guidelines to devise a semantics-based user interface model called WYSIWYM (What You See Is What You Mean) which enables integrated authoring, visualization and exploration of unstructured and (semi-)structured content. To assess the applicability of our proposed WYSIWYM model, we incorporated the model into four real-world use cases comprising two general and two domain-specific applications. These use cases address four aspects of the WYSIWYM implementation: 1) Its integration into existing user interfaces, 2) Utilizing it for lightweight text analytics to incentivize users, 3) Dealing with crowdsourcing of semi-structured e-learning content, 4) Incorporating it for authoring of semantic medical prescriptions

    Creating a dynamic music artist profile supported by waves of mashups

Neste campo, essas mudanças levaram a que todo um modelo de negócio tenha agora de ser repensado. As editoras parecem estar a perder o controlo sobre a partilha dos conteúdos mas também sobre a própria promoção de artistas e obras. Hoje em dia qualquer pessoa pode ser um critico de música e exercer influencia dentro das suas redes sociais. É neste contexto que surge o Urock, uma aplicação multiplataformas para a partilha e transmissão de conteúdos musicais que permite aproximação entre artista e público. A especificação deste projecto levantou várias questões, entre as quais como atrair novos utilizadores e lidar com a quantidade de informação e conteúdos que estes têm dispersos na rede. O advento da tecnologia de mashups poderá ser a resposta a este problema. O utilizador comum tem, normalmente, a sua informação mais concentrada num local da rede e controlo sobre os seus conteúdos. No entanto, o utilizador artista pode ter a sua informação dispersa por vários locais na rede e pode não ter controlo sobre os conteúdos que lhe dizem respeito. Por esse motivo, a presente investigação procura identificar quais os web services necessários para criar perfil de artista dinâmico. Na impossibilidade de desenvolver a aplicação Urock, foi conceptualizado e implementado um subproduto, o Musikki. Esta aplicação permitiu efectuar um estudo de caso que possibilitou avaliar um modelo de mashups proposto como hipótese de trabalho.The advent of Internet introduced changes in several areas of society and the music industry is no exception. These changes are forcing to a redefinition of the industryʼs business model. Record labels seem to be losing their control over how music content is shared and even how the promotion of artists and works are made. Nowadays, anyone can be a music critic and influence their network friends on what music to listen to. It is in this context that the Urock project appears, a user-generated content cross-platform application specially oriented for publishing and broadcasting musical content. Its main objective is to help new or established artists to promote their work, creating a bidirectional communication channel between artists and audience. The specification of this project raised several issues, like how to attract new users and how to deal with the information and content they have scattered all over the Internet. The advent of mashup technology might be the solution to this problem. Typically, common users have their information concentrated in one or two locations and total control over their media content. However, the user artist might have his information and content stored in different locations and might not have full control over all their content. For this reason, this research aims to identify which web services can be combined to create a dynamic user profile. Due to time restrictions it was impossible to develop the Urock application. For this reason, Musikki, an Urock sub product, was conceptualized and developed. This application allowed the evaluation, by means of a case study, of the mashup model proposed as a working hypothesis
