    An Experimental Distributed Framework for Distributed Simultaneous Localization and Mapping

    Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is widely used in applications such as rescue, navigation, semantic mapping, augmented reality and home entertainment applications. Most of these applications would do better if multiple devices are used in a distributed setting. The distributed SLAM research would benefit if there is a framework where the complexities of network communication is already handled. In this paper we introduce such framework utilizing open source Robot Operating System (ROS) and VirtualBox virtualization software. Furthermore, we describe a way to measure communication statistics of the distributed SLAM system

    To contribute to understanding of information economies of daily life, this paper explores over the past millennium given names of a large number of persons. Analysts have long both condemned and praised mass media as a source of common culture, national unity, or shared symbolic experiences. Names, however, indicate a large decline in shared symbolic experience over the past two centuries, a decline that the growth of mass media does not appear to have affected significantly. Study of names also shows that action and personal relationships, along with time horizon, are central aspects of effective communication across a large population. The observed preference for personalization over the past two centuries and the importance of action and personal relationships to effective communication are aspects of information economies that are likely to have continuing significance for industry developments, economic statistics, and public policy

    JeroMF: A Software Development Framework for Building Distributed Applications Based on Microservices and JeroMQ

    This report describes a project involving the design, implementation, and testing of a software development framework, called JeroMF, that can help developers create scalable distributed applications based on a microservice architecture and that uses JeroMQ (a native Java implementation of ZeroMQ) for message passing. JeroMF provides an execution framework and extensible components for implementing processes, services, communication channels, messages, communication statistics, and encryption. Applications built with JeroMF do not require a message broker or any other middleware processes. However, they may include an optional Service Registry that can facilitate for service discovery and secure communications. The Service Registry itself was implemented with JeroMF and is included as part of the JeroMF distribution. Thorough unit, integration and system test cases exist for every component of JeroMF. For validation, JeroMF was used to re-design and re-implement a distributed health-care application with 13 separate types of services and very strict security requirements

    A Mobile Geo-Communication Dataset for Physiology-Aware DASH in Rural Ambulance Transport

    Use of telecommunication technologies for remote, continuous monitoring of patients can enhance effectiveness of emergency ambulance care during transport from rural areas to a regional center hospital. However, the communication along the various routes in rural areas may have wide bandwidth ranges from 2G to 4G; some regions may have only lower satellite bandwidth available. Bandwidth fluctuation together with real-time communication of various clinical multimedia pose a major challenge during rural patient ambulance transport.; AB@The availability of a pre-transport route-dependent communication bandwidth database is an important resource in remote monitoring and clinical multimedia transmission in rural ambulance transport. Here, we present a geo-communication dataset from extensive profiling of 4 major US mobile carriers in Illinois, from the rural location of Hoopeston to the central referral hospital center at Urbana. In collaboration with Carle Foundation Hospital, we developed a profiler, and collected various geographical and communication traces for realistic emergency rural ambulance transport scenarios. Our dataset is to support our ongoing work of proposing "physiology-aware DASH", which is particularly useful for adaptive remote monitoring of critically ill patients in emergency rural ambulance transport. It provides insights on ensuring higher Quality of Service (QoS) for most critical clinical multimedia in response to changes in patients' physiological states and bandwidth conditions.     Review of Lead Phase Out for Air Quality Improvement in the Third World Cities Lessons from Thailand and Indonesia

    Due to the rapid economic growth, and increase of motor vehicle ownerships in Asian countries, people are suffering from serious air pollution problems, especially in large cities. There has been a worldwide movement to eliminate lead from gasoline since the 1970s. In accordance with lead elimination from gasoline, the concentration of lead in air and its health impact have also decreased. This paper is an attempt to discuss about environmental measures in Thailand and Indonesia. From a point of view on environmental measures, the case studies show different problem and process of lead phase out policy because of different socio-economic backgrounds, the initial conditions of the oil industries and government capacity.     A multiprocessor based packet-switch: performance analysis of the communication infrastructure

    The intra-chip communication infrastructures are receiving always more attention since they are becoming a crucial part in the development of current SoCs. Due to the high availability of pre-characterized hard-IP, the complexity of the design is moving toward global interconnections which are introducing always more constraints at each technology node. Power consumption, timing closure, bandwidth requirements, time to market, are some of the factors that are leading to the proposal of new solutions for next generation multi-million SoCs. The need of high programmable systems and the high gate-count availability is moving always more attention on multiprocessors systems (MP-SoC) and so an adequate solution must be found for the communication infrastructure. One of the most promising technologies is the Network-On-Chip (NoC) architecture, which seems to better fit with the new demanding complexity of such systems. Before starting to develop new solutions, it is crucial to fully understand if and when current bus architectures introduce strong limitations in the development of high speed systems. This article describes a case study of a multiprocessor based ethernet packet-switch application with a shared-bus communication infrastructure. This system aims to depict all the bottlenecks which a shared-bus introduces under heavy load. What emerges from this analysis is that, as expected, a shared-bus is not scalable and it strongly limits whole system performances. These results strengthen the hypothesis that new communication architectures (like the NoC) must be found
