Since 2011, I have directed the Belize River East Archaeology (BREA) project, which is a 6000 km2study area in the eastern half of the Belize watershed in Belize, Central America. According to sixteenth century Spanish ethnohistoric accounts, settlements in the BREA study area produced large quantities of cacao--the coveted chocolate bean--in all of the Maya Lowlands (Jones 1989). Currently,we know more about cacao consumption than its production of this orchard crop in the Maya area.We know from their art that cacao was a staple in ancient Maya feasts. However, it is elusive in the archaeological record as the pollen, phytoliths, and macrobotanical remains do not preserve well

Belize’s Northern Region; Its Economic Performance in the post-independence period

Belize got its Independence when the region was going through an economic crisis with debt burden and traditional export prices reduction. The northern region, once the most important economically, faced major challenges which prompted the introduction of fiscal incentive programs to alleviate the growing unemployment and decreasing economic activity. As an international border, it also faced, during the eighties and nineties, the effects of the Mexican peso devaluation. However, Mexico also constituted its mayor market for the establishment of the Commercial Free Zone. The northern region economy has only partially recovered from the major structural changes that Belize has gone through in its post independence period.Regional development; Belize

Agricultural Information Needs and Food Access in the Stann Creek District of Belize

The purpose of this study was to describe agricultural information sources available to farmers and to describe food access and availability for the people of Dangriga, Stann Creek, Belize. This study used descriptive survey research methods with convenience sampling of the general public (n=22) and of farmers (n = 38) in the summer of 2017. Farmers use a variety of agricultural information sources with the extension service cited most often, followed by friends and fellow farmers. Weather, lack of information, pests, and inadequate access to capital were of primary concern for farmers. Face-to-face meetings were used most often by extension officers for disseminating agricultural information. Smallholder farmers and the general public have very similar levels of food access and availability. No significant difference was foundbetween the smallholder farmers and the general public on food insecurity with both groups reporting mild to severe food insecurity. Recommendations focused on practical operational strategies for the local Department of Agriculture, as well as the Belize Ministry of Agriculture to eradicate hungerand increase overall food access and availability throughout Belize

The Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) of Belize, Central America

The Culicoides fauna of Belize is poorly known, and until 197 4 only 3 species were recorded. Nineteen species of Culicoides from Belize were identified from six collection sites: C. barbosai Wirth & Blanton, C. crepuscularis Malloch, C. debilipalpis Lutz, C. diabolic us Hoffman, C. foxi Ortiz, C. furens (Poey), C. gabaldoni Ortiz, C. heliconiae Fox & Hoffman, C. hoffmani Fox, C. imitator Ortiz, C. insignis Lutz, C. jamaicensis Edwards, C. leopoldoi Ortiz, C. limai Barretto, C. paraensis (Goeldi), C. pifanoi Ortiz, C. pusilloides Wirth & Blanton, C. pusillus Lutz, and a new species, C. mckeeveri Brickle & Hagan is described and illustrated

Case Study: Collective Impact of Managed Access Program Puts Belize Fisheries on Path to Recovery

According to the Belize Fisheries Department, the wild-capture fishery sector contributes significantly to the country's economy. It brought in approximately $29 million in 2012. But the open-access system that characterizes fishing in Belize has allowed uncontrolled numbers of fishers with readily obtained licenses to harvest more fish than the oceans can replenish. This has resulted in a threat of overfishing, declining stocks, and fewer economic benefits for fishers over the long term. Transitioning to a sustainable system would require transformative new policies, along with the support and participation of fishers, industry stakeholders, and their communities

Self-employment and the chicle trade: the case of the Lebanese minority in the Cayo district of Belize

Belize iss a relative small country in Central America, which is enclosed by Mexico in the north and by Guatemala in the west and south. The country has a multi-ethnic population consisting of, amongst others, Mestizos, Creoles, Garinagu, Maya's, Mennonites, Chinese and East Indian. One of the ethnic minorities, which has a strong economic position in Belize, is the Lebanese community. When the Lebanese first arrived in Belize in the early 1900s Belize was a prosperous British colony. Lebanese came to Belize because they wanted to improve their economic situation. The word had reached them that Belize was a good and calm country where they could succeed and readily engage in business. The first immigrants came through Mexico which had a large Lebanese community. The focus of this article is on the Lebanese migration to Belize and how the Lebanese used self-employment to become successful entrepreneurs in Belize. Copyright © 2012 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd
