    Learning Spatiotemporal Features for Infrared Action Recognition with 3D Convolutional Neural Networks

    Infrared (IR) imaging has the potential to enable more robust action recognition systems compared to visible spectrum cameras due to lower sensitivity to lighting conditions and appearance variability. While the action recognition task on videos collected from visible spectrum imaging has received much attention, action recognition in IR videos is significantly less explored. Our objective is to exploit imaging data in this modality for the action recognition task. In this work, we propose a novel two-stream 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture by introducing the discriminative code layer and the corresponding discriminative code loss function. The proposed network processes IR image and the IR-based optical flow field sequences. We pretrain the 3D CNN model on the visible spectrum Sports-1M action dataset and finetune it on the Infrared Action Recognition (InfAR) dataset. To our best knowledge, this is the first application of the 3D CNN to action recognition in the IR domain. We conduct an elaborate analysis of different fusion schemes (weighted average, single and double-layer neural nets) applied to different 3D CNN outputs. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach can achieve state-of-the-art average precision (AP) performances on the InfAR dataset: (1) the proposed two-stream 3D CNN achieves the best reported 77.5% AP, and (2) our 3D CNN model applied to the optical flow fields achieves the best reported single stream 75.42% AP

    Electrically monitoring DNA repair by photolyase

    Cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers are the major DNA photoproducts produced upon exposure to UV radiation. If left unrepaired, these lesions can lead to replication errors, mutation, and cell death. Photolyase is a light-activated flavoenzyme that binds to pyrimidine dimers in DNA and repairs them in a reaction triggered by electron transfer from the photoexcited flavin cofactor to the dimer. Using gold electrodes modified with DNA duplexes containing a cyclobutane thymine dimer (T T), here we probe the electrochemistry of the flavin cofactor in Escherichia coli photolyase. Cyclic and square-wave voltammograms of photolyase deposited on these electrodes show a redox signal at 40 mV versus normal hydrogen electrode, consistent with electron transfer to and from the flavin in the DNA-bound protein. This signal is dramatically attenuated on surfaces where the pi-stacking of the DNA bases is perturbed by the presence of an abasic site below the T T, an indication that the redox pathway is DNA-mediated. DNA repair can, moreover, be monitored electrically. Exposure of photolyase on T T-damaged DNA films to near-UV/blue light leads to changes in the flavin signal consistent with repair, as confirmed by parallel HPLC experiments. These results demonstrate the exquisite sensitivity of DNA electrochemistry to perturbations in base pair stacking and the applicability of this chemistry to probe reactions of proteins with DNA

    AbstractThis study determines leadership behaviors of public school principals as perceived by public school teachers in relation to teacher job satisfaction in Northern Cyprus. Teachers’ perceptions of their school principals’ leadership behavior was measured by the Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ). Teachers’ expressed job satisfaction level was measured by the Mohrman-Cooke-Mohrman Job Satisfaction Scales (MCMJSS). A Linear Regression analysis proved a significantly positive relationship between school principals’ perceived ‘consideration’ behavior and teachers’ expressed job satisfaction. However, there was no significant relationship between school principals’ perceived ‘initiation of structure’ behavior and expressed teachers job satisfaction levels

    Dawn- and dusk-phased circadian transcription rhythms coordinate anabolic and catabolic functions in Neurospora

    Background: Circadian clocks control rhythmic expression of a large number of genes in coordination with the 24 hour day-night cycle. The mechanisms generating circadian rhythms, their amplitude and circadian phase are dependent on a transcriptional network of immense complexity. Moreover, the contribution of post-transcriptional mechanisms in generating rhythms in RNA abundance is not known. Results: Here, we analyzed the clock-controlled transcriptome of Neurospora crassa together with temporal profiles of elongating RNA polymerase II. Our data indicate that transcription contributes to the rhythmic expression of the vast majority of clock-controlled genes (ccgs) in Neurospora. The ccgs accumulate in two main clusters with peak transcription and expression levels either at dawn or dusk. Dawn-phased genes are predominantly involved in catabolic and dusk-phased genes in anabolic processes, indicating a clock-controlled temporal separation of the physiology of Neurospora. Genes whose expression is strongly dependent on the core circadian activator WCC fall mainly into the dawn-phased cluster while rhythmic genes regulated by the glucose-dependent repressor CSP1 fall predominantly into the dusk-phased cluster. Surprisingly, the number of rhythmic transcripts increases about twofold in the absence of CSP1, indicating that rhythmic expression of many genes is attenuated by the activity of CSP1. Conclusions: The data indicate that the vast majority of transcript rhythms in Neurospora are generated by dawn and dusk specific transcription. Our observations suggest a substantial plasticity of the circadian transcriptome with respect to the number of rhythmic genes as well as amplitude and phase of the expression rhythms and emphasize a major role of the circadian clock in the temporal organization of metabolism and physiology

This database summarizes organism-sorted data on replication proteins in the categories of nomenclature, biochemical properties, motifs, interactions, modifications, structure, cell localization and expression, and general comments. Replication concepts are defined and a general model of the steps in DNA replication is presented. Links to relevant websites and homepages of replication labs are provided. The site also has an interactive section where links to recent replication papers are posted and readers are provided with the facility to post comments about each paper. The interactive and links pages are modified weekly and the whole site is updated annually

Le Fort I osteotomy in maxilla and sagittal split ramus osteotomies (SSRO) in mandible are commonly used techniques to solve the deformity problems of the facial skeleton; therefore, the scope of this chapter is going to be including my personal experience and some technical details with Le Fort I and SSRO
