Photonic Crystal and Photonic Crystal Fibers Communications

    Get PDF
The development of all optical communications could benefit from the index guiding photonic crystal fibers. In communication the photonic crystal fibers could provide many new solutions. Conventional optical fibers have within the last decades revolutionized the communications industry and it is today a mature technology being pushed to its limit with respect to properties such as losses, single mode operation and dispersion. The spectra have been used by others to develop optical frequency standards. The process can potentially be used for frequency conversion in fiber optic network. In this system the dispersive properties can be controlled by the optical lattice making it possible to achieve phase-matched four wave mixing, like look the process taking place in the photonic crystal fibers. In this paper we will discuss the use of photonic crystal fibers in communications

Circumnavigation of an Unknown Target Using UAVs with Range and Range Rate Measurements

This paper presents two control algorithms enabling a UAV to circumnavigate an unknown target using range and range rate (i.e., the derivative of range) measurements. Given a prescribed orbit radius, both control algorithms (i) tend to drive the UAV toward the tangent of prescribed orbit when the UAV is outside or on the orbit, and (ii) apply zero control input if the UAV is inside the desired orbit. The algorithms differ in that, the first algorithm is smooth and unsaturated while the second algorithm is non-smooth and saturated. By analyzing properties associated with the bearing angle of the UAV relative to the target and through proper design of Lyapunov functions, it is shown that both algorithms produce the desired orbit for an arbitrary initial state. Three examples are provided as a proof of concept.Comment: To appear in IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 201

The Weight of Words: How Word Choice Impacts the Perception of Weight Stigma in Various Settings

Weight stigma is the systematic stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination against people based on their weight (Link & Phelan, 2001). Weight stigma has been extensively researched as a function of the setting of an interaction or the language used to describe people with high weight status, but few existing studies investigate weight stigma as a function of both of these factors. The present study examined the effects of different interaction settings and weight descriptors on perceptions of weight stigma and characteristics of a person with high weight status. Participants (n = 115) were college students who self-selected to complete the survey for extra credit in an introductory psychology course. The study used vignettes and original survey questions. Eight total vignettes were written comparing the use of four descriptors (“obese, “overweight, “fat, “heavy) in two interaction settings (medical and social) and participants were randomly assigned to one condition. “Fat was significantly less appropriate to use in the medical setting than the other three descriptors. Although no significant differences were found between descriptor appropriateness in the social setting, “fat was again rated as least appropriate to use. No significant differences were found in the suitability of adjectives used to describe the vignette character. These results indicate that “fat is a generally unacceptable term to use when describing someone with a high weight status, and care should be taken when discussing someone’s weight status in any setting

Requirements of knowledge sharing for group decision support system

    Get PDF
Group decision support systems (GDSS) have evolved from applications designed primarily to support decision making for groups. Indeed, it is generally accepted that improvements of group support systems is a longstanding interest to organizational researchers, containing solid practical as well as scientific significance. Within this practice, there is increasing challenge to improve the exchange of knowledge among group members in order to enhance GDSS capability of knowledge sharing. Therefore, the paper investigates the current GDSS situation and analyzing the requirements of knowledge sharing (KS) to enhance GDSS. It is hoped that these findings will aid to provide GDSS systems with the solid capability of knowledge sharing

    Diamond Ring

I first heard this story from my mom, she went on a trip back east to pick up my brother from basic training, he was in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and they in that time, sped up to Nauvoo to tour some of the church history sights and, I’m not sure what part of the tour it was or where they were but, one of the tour ladies was you know explaining stuff, had all these rings that just looked like a nail bent in a circle and the top of the nail or the head was, you know, a pretty big sized diamond shape. And the lady said to my mom and dad that the story goes that, this young pioneer boy wanted to you know, was gonna you know, in love with this young pioneer girl, and I mean not super young, but the young pioneer boy told the father that he wanted to you know propose to his daughter and he said not unless you get her a diamond ring and so the boy said well that’s easy so he went home and got this big old you know diamond headed nails and bent it in a circle and brought it right back. And apparently that was good enough and they got married and she wore the diamond headed nail for the rest of her life and. That’s the story. My mom had a bunch of them for us when she got home and [smacked his lips together] said that’s what they looked like and that was the story
