[Abstract] The architectural process, from the concept to the actual building itself, is a long sequence of compromises, reconsiderations and unexpected events that require mediation strategies and the balancing of the attitudes of the architects. The relationship between the client and the designer represents a significant part of the architectural process as it has a considerable influence on the end result. This study investigates episodes of formal negotiation between the architect Francesco Berarducci (Rome, 1924-92) and the client of the San Valentino church in the Olympic Village in Rome (promoted in 1960). It examines archival documents such as letters, sketches and drawings of the cross correspondence between Berarducci and the priest. The aim is to investigate the involvement of the religious client in the decision-making process, resulting in the final consistency of the church, and to individuate the mediation strategies at the base of the professional skill of Berarducci.[Resumen] El proceso arquitectónico, desde el concepto hasta el edificio mismo, es una larga secuencia de compromisos, reconsideraciones y eventos inesperados que requieren estrategias de mediación y el equilibrio de las actitudes de los arquitectos.

Twenty years of clients for religious architectures: projects, processes and results of contemporary Italian churches

    Get PDF
The contribution proposes a reflection on the relationship between the client, the architect and the various actors involved in the planning, design and construction of new churches, focusing on the Italian context in the last twenty years, and asking who can be considered the actual client for religious buildings. The selected time frame underlines a season characterised by different experimentation approaches for architectural competitions promoted, facilitated or supported by the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), starting from the experience of the Pilot Projects, passing through the Diocesan Paths, up to the most recent Participatory Processes, aimed at reducing the gap between Church client, user’s requests, and architectural projects. Such processes involve a large panel of actors, including the National and Diocesan bodies, local interlocutors, and the design teams, made up of various professionals. The study aims to investigate such recent procedures, to provide an analytical look at the maturing of the processes and to the identification of the collective clien

Geometric and structural information for the analysis of historical domes: the case of SS. Trinità church in Torino

Investigation into the geometric configuration of historical masonry domes is fundamental when studying the structural behaviour of these architectural elements, above all if they have historical and artistic relevance. Indeed, accurate geometric information is essential also for the construction of reliable mechanical models, to monitor the condition state of the building and to plan strengthening and conservation interventions. To this aim, a multidisciplinary approach is required to collate the highest possible amount of data useful for the numerical modelling, including historical and archival research. The "SS. Trinità" church is a 16th century building of great historical, architectural and structural significance in the historic centre of Turin. It owes its fame primarily to the architect who built it, Ascanio Vitozzi, and to its large dome, built after the architect’s death. The availability of a recently undertaken laser scanner survey of the intrados of the dome made it possible to detect several depressions of the masonry cap. These findings can be either due to construction defects, or to structural problems that developed over centuries, or to the severe fire which struck the dome in 1942. In this multidisciplinary research, different numerical models of the masonry dome of SS.Trinità church were built. As a first step, a geometric study was based on the point cloud from the laser scanning. Then, structural analyses were conducted on the two different models of the dome-tambour system of the building, in order to try to explain the observed deformation behaviou

Vittone’s domes have been widely addressed by reference literature, above all from the point of view of their formal qualities, and of the use of natural light. However, the geometrical and dimensional characters of his domes have been, up to now, hardly investigated. A specific research on the archival sources regarding dome conception and construction, as well as on existing structures is, therefore, necessary if we want to provide new insight on this complex subject. This study investigates the geometric tracings of Vittone’s domes, starting from the theoretical positions he has illustrated in his own Istruzioni elementari. A comparison with a selection of Vittone’s designs for domed churches, as published in the Istruzioni diverse, follows. The comparison then is taken to two actually built case studies, investigated through drawings and by the use of field survey data. The aim of this preliminary study is define a frame, useful to further investigate the design and construction principles of domes, highlighting the gap between theoretical, project and construction-oriented drawings. Our conclusions will have to be validated through further field surveys; however, they already show that a multidisciplinary approach, taking into account a multiplicity of sources (archival, literature, drawings, digital surveys, etc.), is needed.

Preliminary and accurate evaluation of the security and the vulnerability of ecclesiastical cultural heritage is required before start develop reuse and regeneration strategies. This is ever more important in Italy that is subject to several kind of risks (seismic, hydrogeological, landslides, etc.). In addition to the technical analyses, historical knowledge on territory and buildings play a fundamental role in the evaluation of vulnerabilities. This contribute shows first results of a research program about the development of strategies for the large-scale evaluation of vulnerabilities of churches. With the aim to obtain a useful conservation and valorisation of cultural heritage, the application and implementation of these methodologies allow to elaborate a support tool for the management and activity planning for regeneration and reuse of churches
