    The ecological approach to multimodal system design

    Following the ecological approach to visual perception, this paper presents a framework that emphasizes the role of vision on referring actions. In particular, affordances are utilized to explain gestures variability in a multimodal human-computer interaction. Such a proposal is consistent with empirical findings obtained in different simulation studies showing how referring gestures are determined by the mutuality of information coming from the target and the set of movements available to the speaker. A prototype that follows anthropomorphic perceptual principles to analyze gestures has been developed and tested in preliminary computational validations

    We investigate the isotropic-anisotropic phase transition of the two-dimensional XY model with six-fold anisotropy, using Monte Carlo renormalization group method.     Spin-orbit coupled particle in a spin bath

    We consider a spin-orbit coupled particle confined in a quantum dot in a bath of impurity spins. We investigate the consequences of spin-orbit coupling on the interactions that the particle mediates in the spin bath. We show that in the presence of spin-orbit coupling, the impurity-impurity interactions are no longer spin-conserving. We quantify the degree of this symmetry breaking and show how it relates to the spin-orbit coupling strength. We identify several ways how the impurity ensemble can in this way relax its spin by coupling to phonons. A typical resulting relaxation rate for a self-assembled Mn-doped ZnTe quantum dot populated by a hole is 1 μ\mus. We also show that decoherence arising from nuclear spins in lateral quantum dots is still removable by a spin echo protocol, even if the confined electron is spin-orbit coupled.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figur

    Development and performance of the Clinical Trials ESSDAI (ClinTrialsESSDAI), consisting of frequently active clinical domains, in two randomised controlled trials in primary Sjogren's syndrome

    Objective. To develop and evaluate the Clinical Trials EULAR Sjogren's Syndrome Disease Activity Index (ClinTrialsESSDAI), consisting of frequently active clinical domains of the ESSDAI, using two randomised controlled trials in primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS). Methods. The ASAP-III trial in abatacept (80 pSS patients) and TRACTISS trial in rituximab (133 pSS patients) were analysed. The most frequently active clinical domains were selected, and ClinTrialsESSDAI total score was calculated using existing weightings of the ClinESSDAI (which also excludes the biological domain). Performance of the ClinTrialsESSDAI was compared to ClinESSDAI and ESSDAI. Responsiveness was assessed using standardised response mean (SRM), and discrimination was assessed using adjusted mean difference. Results. Besides the biological domain, the most frequently active domains were glandular, articular, haematological, constitutional, lymphadenopathy and cutaneous. These domains were selected for the ClinTrialsESSDAI. At primary endpoint visits, SRM values of ClinTrialsESSDAI, ClinESSDAI and ESSDAI were respectively -0.65/-0.59, -0.63/-0.59 and - 0.64/-0.61 for abatacept/placebo and -0.33/-0.13, -0.34/0.12 and -0.41/-0.16 for rituximab/placebo. Adjusted mean differences between active treatment and placebo groups were respectively -1.7, -1.4 and -1.1 for ASAP-III and -1.1, -1.1 and -1.2 for TRACTISS. Conclusion. The ClinTrialsESSDAI, consisting of six frequently active clinical domains of the ESSDAI, shows closely similar responsiveness and discrimination between treatment groups compared to the ClinESSDAI and ESSDAI. Therefore, this ClinTrialsESSDAI is not preferable to ClinESSDAI and ESSDAI for use as primary endpoint. A composite endpoint combining response at multiple clinically relevant items seems more suitable as primary study endpoint in pSS

    Solid Surface Structure Affects Liquid Order at the Polystyrene/SAM Interface

    We present a combined x-ray and neutron reflectivity study characterizing the interface between polystyrene (PS) and silanized surfaces. Motivated by the large difference in slip velocity of PS on top of dodecyl-trichlorosilane (DTS) and octadecyl-trichlorosilane (OTS) found in previous studies, these two systems were chosen for the present investigation. The results reveal the molecular conformation of PS on silanized silicon. Differences in the molecular tilt of OTS and DTS are replicated by the adjacent phenyl rings of the PS. We discuss our findings in terms of a potential link between the microscopic interfacial structure and dynamic properties of polymeric liquids at interfaces

    The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire Parent Form:Dutch norms and validity

    OBJECTIVE: This study provides Dutch national norms for the parent-reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) for children aged 3-14 years, and assesses the test performance of the SDQ Total Difficulties Scale (TDS) and impairment Scale. We further compared Dutch SDQ norms with those of the United Kingdom (UK), to determine potential variation in country-specific norms. STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed data of 3384 children aged 3 to 14 years. The data were obtained in schools, and in the context of Preventive Child Healthcare. Parents completed the SDQ parent form and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). We determined clinical (10% elevated scores) and borderline (20% elevated scores) SDQ TDS norms. We assessed the test performance (validity) of the SDQ TDS and Impairment Score using the CBCL as criterion. RESULTS: The clinical SDQ TDS norms varied between > 10 and > 14 depending on the age group. The SDQ TDS discriminated between children with and without problems, as measured by the CBCL, for all age groups (AUCs varied from 0.92 to 0.96). The SDQ Impairment Score had added value (beyond the SDQ TDS) only for the age group 12-14 years. For the Netherlands we found lower clinical SDQ TDS norms than those previously reported for the UK (i.e. > 16). CONCLUSION: The clinical SDQ TDS norms varied between > 10 and > 14 depending on the age groups. We found good test performance at these proposed norms. Dutch norms differed somewhat from UK norms. In the Netherlands, the SDQ performed better with Dutch-specific norms than with UK-specific norms

    Ecological Interfaces: Extending the Pointing Paradigm by Visual Context

    Following the ecological approach to visual perception, this paper presents an innovative framework for the design of multimodal systems. The proposal emphasises the role of the visual context on gestural communication. It is aimed at extending the concept of affordances to explain referring gesture variability. The validity of the approach is confirmed by results of a simulation experiment. A discussion of practical implications of our findings for software architecture design is presented
