The Life of Forms
In the preliminary work for his Theses On the Concept of History, Walter Benjamin quotes a passage from Henri Focillonâs La vie des formes, using Focillonâs description of classical style for his own notion of the dialectical image. The Essay locates Benjaminâs surprising reception of Focillon in their common interest in a life of forms, not so much in the sense of aesthetic liveliness as defined by Kant (âBeförderung der Lebendigkeitâ), but in its productiveness of other forms. Focillonâs idea of art history is based on the dynamis or potentiality of artistic shapes giving way to ever new figures and forms. This is not only a key to Benjaminâs concepts of Fortleben/Nachleben in the early Essay The Task of the Translator but also to the âdialectical imageâ outlined in the Arcades Project. Benjamin, this Essay argues, refers to Focillonâs life of forms to conceptualise disharmonious and sudden changes of form
The fragmented and apparently contingent structure of Goethe's novel "Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre" introduces, as will be shown here, a specific time regime. The novel unfolds the stories of its main characters Wilhelm and Lenardo in an analeptical fashion developing its events not in their chronological order, but in time loops and regressions. This narrative of and in 'Vorgeschichten' (prehistories or backstories) harks back to Goethe's reading of Homeric epic and also corresponds to temporal reflections voiced in his geological studies

Dealing with forces is part of the basic inventory of artistic processes. In giving shape and movement to material, such forces are manifested in a specific form; as push and pull, for example, as heaviness and lightness, but also as attachment and dissolution. The articles in the book examine notions of formative and motive forces using examples from art, music, dance, theater, photography and literature. The questions posed not only cover how historical notions of force (such as energeia and vis from ancient rhetoric) are adopted, taken further, and correlated with mechanically, metaphysically and organologically based concepts of force, but also how, in the examination of form and movement, the inherent concepts of force are manifested or presented in a new light
