The Nature of Novelty Detection
Sentence level novelty detection aims at reducing redundant sentences from a
sentence list. In the task, sentences appearing later in the list with no new
meanings are eliminated. Aiming at a better accuracy for detecting redundancy,
this paper reveals the nature of the novelty detection task currently
overlooked by the Novelty community Novelty as a combination of the partial
overlap (PO, two sentences sharing common facts) and complete overlap (CO, the
first sentence covers all the facts of the second sentence) relations. By
formalizing novelty detection as a combination of the two relations between
sentences, new viewpoints toward techniques dealing with Novelty are proposed.
Among the methods discussed, the similarity, overlap, pool and language
modeling approaches are commonly used. Furthermore, a novel approach, selected
pool method is provided, which is immediate following the nature of the task.
Experimental results obtained on all the three currently available novelty
datasets showed that selected pool is significantly better or no worse than the
current methods. Knowledge about the nature of the task also affects the
evaluation methodologies. We propose new evaluation measures for Novelty
according to the nature of the task, as well as possible directions for future

Teaching E-Business with Limited Resources
This case study is an initial attempt to assist colleagues at resource-limited colleges to efficiently design and conduct new e-business courses. This detailed case study of the results is intended to assist others at similar schools in creating e-business offerings which result in similarly high levels of student satisfaction, cognitive learning and affective outcomes. E-business is a rapidly evolving and confused area. As a result, a major challenge to instructors is how to support students in learning how to learn rather than to master an established body of information. No one at the present time is, or really can be, an “expert” at e-business. Which means that, particularly at smaller schools, the real challenge is to determine how existing faculty with no formal background in the e-business area can leverage their pedagogical skills to successfully offer new courses in on topics such as electronic commerce (EC) and electronic marketing (EM). To facilitate that process, the following case analyzes in some detail the experience of designing and offering two new graduate business courses at a small (6,000+) state college in the United States. A few, very preliminary, conclusions and recommendations can be made but each should be carefully assessed within the context of other institutions and situations

Elevated Levels of Interferon-γ Production by Memory T Cells Do Not Promote Transplant Tolerance Resistance in Aged Recipients
Immunosenescence predisposes the elderly to infectious and autoimmune diseases and impairs the response to vaccination. We recently demonstrated that ageing also impedes development of transplantation tolerance. Unlike their young counterparts (8-12 weeks of age) aged male recipients (greater than 12 months of age) transplanted with a full MHC-mismatched heart are resistant to tolerance mediated by anti-CD45RB antibody. Surprisingly, either chemical or surgical castration restored tolerance induction to levels observed using young recipients. Based on the strong impact of endocrine modulation on transplant tolerance, we explored the impact of ageing and castration on the immune system. Here we report a significant increase in the percentage of T cells that produce interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in aged male versus young male animals and that the overall increase in IFN-γ production was due to an expansion of IFN-γ-producing memory T cells in aged animals. In contrast to IFN-γ production, we did not observe differences in IL-10 expression in young versus old male mice. We hypothesized that endocrine modulation would diminish the elevated levels of IFN-γ production in aged recipients, however, we observed no significant reduction in the percentage of IFN-γ+ T cells upon castration. Furthermore, we neutralized interferon-γ by antibody and did not observe an effect on graft survival. We conclude that while elevated levels of interferon-γ serves as a marker of tolerance resistance in aged mice, other as yet to be identified factors are responsible for its cause. Defining these factors may be relevant to design of tolerogenic strategies for aged recipients
Container CT scanner: a solution for modular emergency radiology department during the COVID-19 pandemic
During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic period, container computed tomography (CT) scanners were developed and used for the first time in China to perform CT examinations for patients with clinically mild to moderate COVID-19 who did not need to be hospitalized for comprehensive treatment, but needed to be isolated in Fangcang shelter hospitals (also known as makeshift hospitals) to receive some supportive treatment. The container CT is a multidetector CT scanner installed within a radiation-protected stand-alone container (a detachable lead shielding room) that is deployed outside the makeshift hospital buildings. The container CT approach provided various medical institutions with the solution not only for rapid CT installation and high adaptability to site environments, but also for significantly minimizing the risk of cross-infection between radiological personnel and patients during CT examination in the pandemic. Effects of Differently Processed Carrots on Ulcerative Colitis in Mice
The incidence of ulcerative colitis (UC) has been increasing in recent years. Due to the limitations of traditional drug therapies for UC, natural foods that can prevent this disease and alleviate its symptoms are becoming a research hot topic, but the effects of processing methods on their activity remain unknown. Therefore, the effects of three different processing methods (pulping, high-temperature cooking, and fermentation) on carotenoid and dietary fiber contents as well as carotenoid bioaccessibility in carrots were explored in this study. C57BL/6J mice were used to create a mouse model of UC induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) and the mice received dietary intervention with freeze dried powder of carrots (5.05%, on a dry mass basis) for 14 days. Body mass change, disease activity index (DAI) and colon parameters (length, pathology, inflammatory factors, oxidative stress level, goblet cell number, tight junction protein expression, and short-chain fatty acid content) were analyzed to evaluate the effects of three differently processed carrots on UC. The results showed compared with pulping, high-temperature cooking and fermentation significantly decreased the soluble, insoluble and total dietary fiber contents of carrots (P < 0.05), increased the bioaccessibility of carotenoids (P < 0.05), while fermentation significantly increased the proportion of soluble dietary fiber in total dietary fiber (P < 0.05). Compared with the model group, all processed carrots could significantly inhibit the change of body mass loss and DAI (P < 0.05), decrease the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 (P < 0.05), increase the level of IL-10 (P < 0.05), and up-regulate the expression of tight junction proteins (ZO-1, claudin-1, and occludin) (P < 0.05). High-temperature cooked or fermented carrots could significantly alleviate colon shortening (P < 0.05), and relieve the pathological damage of colon tissue (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, fermented carrots could significantly inhibit the production of malondialdehyde (MDA) (P < 0.05), improve the decrease in the number of goblet cells (P < 0.05), increase the level of butyric acid (P < 0.05) and possess the best inhibitory effect on IL-6 production. In summary, differently processed carrots could ameliorate ulcerative colitis to different extends, the most pronounced effect being observed with fermented carrots
