Adolescent Bystander Perceptions of Sexual Violence Scenarios
Sexual violence is an ongoing problem in Canada that affects youth, and has become complicated due to the increased use of social media and the Internet. As a result, new violence prevention programs focus on bystanders’ potential to intervene and has been shown to promote prosocial attitudes toward sexual violence (e.g. Banyard, Moynihan, and Plante, 2007; Katz, Heisterkamp, & Fleming, 2011). The present study examine current attitudes of adolescents in wrongfulness and willingness to intervene in scenarios of sexual violence that occur in either online or offline contexts. The study replicated and modified an existing evidence-supported American questionnaire that uses written bystander scenarios depicting potential sexual violence. Participants were 154 high school students from southwestern Ontario. Significant gender differences, as well as indications for anonymous online victims were found. Implications for future bystander intervention and violence prevention strategies are explored further
GRO J1655-40: from ASCA and XMM-Newton Observations
We have analysed four ASCA observations (1994--1995, 1996--1997) and three
XMM-Newton observations (2005) of this source, in all of which the source is in
high/soft state. We modeled the continuum spectra with relativistic disk model
kerrbb, estimated the spin of the central black hole, and constrained the
spectral hardening factor f_col and the distance. If kerrbb model applies, for
normally used value of f_col, the distance cannot be very small, and f_col

Edible films made of Corn Zein protein and cellulose derivatives
A composite edible film made of corn zein protein (Z) and cellulose derivatives (C) was successfully fabricated. Edible films are coatings used to wrap food products to protect them against microbial deterioration, loss of moisture, and to extend the shelf life of the product. These edible films are consumed together with the product . The mechanical properties, water vapor permeability, application on fruits, and shelf life of the composite film were studied. Zein demonstrated excellent packing characteristics; due to its high no polar contents and hydrophobic nature, zein film served as a moisture barrier. Hydroproxy methylcellulose (HPM) is tasteless, odorless and transparent, and resistant to lipid passage. The results showed that as zein increases in the composite, the methylcellulose decreases, as the flexibility of the film increases. Glycerol was added as a plasticizer to induce flexibility as films were brittle. The (8:2 z/c) film indicated potential barrier properties against the mold growth than the 10:2 Z/C and 6:6 Z/C films. The composite Z/C film shows a promise as a potential packaging material that can be used in food industry
Differential and Joint Effects of Metformin and Statins on Overall Survival of Elderly Patients with Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma: A Large Population-Based Study.
Background: Published evidence indicates that individual use of metformin and statin is associated with reduced cancer mortality. However, their differential and joint effects on pancreatic cancer survival are inconclusive.Methods: We identified a large population-based cohort of 12,572 patients ages 65 years or older with primary pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) diagnosed between 2008 and 2011 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare-linked database. Exposure to metformin and statins was ascertained from Medicare Prescription Drug Event files. Cox proportional hazards models with time-varying covariates adjusted for propensity scores were used to assess the association while controlling for potential confounders.Results: Of 12,572 PDAC patients, 950 (7.56%) had used metformin alone, 4,506 (35.84%) had used statin alone, and 2,445 (19.45%) were dual users. Statin use was significantly associated with improved overall survival [HR, 0.94; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.90-0.98], and survival was more pronounced in postdiagnosis statin users (HR, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.56-0.86). Metformin use was not significantly associated with overall survival (HR, 1.01; 95% CI, 0.94-1.09). No beneficial effect was observed for dual users (HR, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.95-1.05).Conclusions: Our findings suggest potential benefits of statins on improving survival among elderly PDAC patients; further prospective studies are warranted to corroborate the putative benefit of statin therapy in pancreatic cancer.Impact: Although more studies are needed to confirm our findings, our data add to the body of evidence on potential anticancer effects of statins. A Brief History of OLEDs—Emitter Development and Industry Milestones
Organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) have come a long way ever since their first introduction in 1987 at Eastman Kodak. Today, OLEDs are especially valued in the display and lighting industry for their promising features. As one of the research fields that equally inspires and drives development in academia and industry, OLED device technology has continuously evolved over more than 30 years. OLED devices have come forward based on three generations of emitter materials relying on fluorescence (first generation), phosphorescence (second generation), and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (third generation). Furthermore, research in academia and industry toward the fourth generation of OLEDs is in progress. Excerpts from the history of green, orange‐red, and blue OLED emitter development on the side of academia and milestones achieved by key players in the industry are included in this report
Withanolides from Jaborosa caulescens var. bipinnatifida
Two new withanolides 2,3-dihydrotrechonolide A (1) and 2,3-dihydro-21-hydroxytrechonolide A (2) were isolated along with two known withanolides trechonolide A (3) and jaborosalactone 39 (4) from Jaborosa caulescens var. bipinnatifida (Solanaceae). The structures of 1-2 were elucidated through 2D NMR and other spectroscopic techniques. In addition, the structure of withanolide 1 was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis

A novel route to copper(ii) detection using \u27click\u27 chemistry-induced aggregation of gold nanoparticles
A simple colorimetric method for the detection of copper ions in water is described. This method is based on the \u27click\u27 copper(i)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction and its use in promoting the aggregation of azide-tagged gold nanoparticles by a dialkyne cross-linker is described. Nanoparticle cross-linking, evidenced as a colour change, is used for the detection of copper ions. The lowest detected concentration by the naked eye was 1.8 μM, with the response linear with log(concentration) between 1.8-200 μM. The selectivity relative to other potentially interfering ions was evaluated
Association of comorbidity with healthcare utilization in people living With dementia, 2010–2019: a population-based cohort study
Evidence on the healthcare utilization associated with comorbidity in people with dementia is lacking in Chinese societies. This study aimed to quantify healthcare utilization associated with comorbidity that is common in people living with dementia. We conducted a cohort study using population-based data from Hong Kong public hospitals. Individuals aged 35+ with a dementia diagnosis between 2010 and 2019 were included. Among 88,151 participants, people with at least two comorbidities accounted for 81.2%. Estimates from negative binomial regressions showed that compared to those with one or no comorbid condition other than dementia, adjusted rate ratios of hospitalizations among individuals with six or seven and eight or more conditions were 1.97 [98.75% CI, 1.89–2.05] and 2.74 [2.63–2.86], respectively; adjusted rate ratios of Accident and Emergency department visits among individuals with six or seven and eight or more conditions were 1.53 [1.44–1.63] and 1.92 [1.80–2.05], respectively. Comorbid chronic kidney diseases were associated with the highest adjusted rate ratios of hospitalizations (1.81 [1.74–1.89]), whereas comorbid chronic ulcer of the skin was associated with the highest adjusted rate ratios of Accident and Emergency department visits (1.73 [1.61–1.85]). Healthcare utilization for individuals with dementia differed substantially by both the number of comorbid chronic conditions and the presence of some specific comorbid conditions. These findings further highlight the importance of taking account of multiple long-term conditions in tailoring the care approach and developing healthcare plans for people with dementia
