    The determination of exhaust cloud dimensions from films of space shuttle launches

    Principles of photogrammetry are used to calculate the dimension of ground clouds produced from the Space Shuttle launch system. For each of three launches (Missions 41C, 41D, and 51A), a 16 mm camera recorded the ground cloud from three different locations. Measurements were made from outlines of the cloud and other features of interest which were traced onto paper at one-minute intervals using a 16 mm stop-action projector. Cloud characteristics such as top, max width at top, average width, and base are presented as a function of time. A temperature inversion was present each launch day and the cloud responded by first rising into the inversion and then descending to about the inversion height. Max tops were achieved in about three to five minutes and ranged from 2200 m for Mission 41C to 3500 m for Mission 41D. Cloud bases rose steadily to between 700 and 1000 m after 10 minutes. Average widths ranged from 500 to 1700 m depending on mission and camera. Photographs of digitizations of selected film frames are included in the report to show the irregular cloud shapes.     Periodic and discrete Zak bases

    Weyl's displacement operators for position and momentum commute if the product of the elementary displacements equals Planck's constant. Then, their common eigenstates constitute the Zak basis, each state specified by two phase parameters. Upon enforcing a periodic dependence on the phases, one gets a one-to-one mapping of the Hilbert space on the line onto the Hilbert space on the torus. The Fourier coefficients of the periodic Zak bases make up the discrete Zak bases. The two bases are mutually unbiased.     Berry phases in superconducting transitions

    I generalize the concept of Berry's geometrical phase for quasicyclic Hamiltonians to the case in which the ground state evolves adiabatically to an excited state after one cycle, but returns to the ground state after an integer number of cycles. This allows to extend the charge Berry phase gamma_c related to the macroscopic polarization, to many-body systems with fractional number of particles per site. Under certain conditions, gamma_c and the spin Berry phase gamma_s jump in pi at the boundary of superconducting phases. In the extended Hubbard chain with on-site attraction U and nearest-neighbor interaction V at quarter filling, the transitions detected agree very well with exact results in two limits solved by the Bethe ansatz, and with previous numerical studies.     Oxytocin Increases Generosity in Humans

    Human beings routinely help strangers at costs to themselves. Sometimes the help offered is generous offering more than the other expects. The proximate mechanisms supporting generosity are not well-understood, but several lines of research suggest a role for empathy. In this study, participants were infused with 40 IU oxytocin (OT) or placebo and engaged in a blinded, one-shot decision on how to split a sum of money with a stranger that could be rejected. Those on OT were 80% more generous than those given a placebo. OT had no effect on a unilateral monetary transfer task dissociating generosity from altruism. OT and altruism together predicted almost half the interpersonal variation in generosity. Notably, OT had twofold larger impact on generosity compared to altruism.     The Relationship Between Career Choice and Indecision Within the Career and Technical Education Pathway Model

    The United States is shifting the public education model toward one that favors increasing skill complexity to lead students into future careers. It is uncertain, however, if these changes are benefiting students and having the desired impact on the future workforce. Utilizing the Swiss and German dual apprenticeship and work-based learning model, Utah is attempting to bring more practical and hands-on experiential learning opportunities to students across the state. This study intended to understand if these changes are accomplishing the intended result in students in rural eastern Utah. Furthermore, the study found that students who engage in early experiential learning opportunities in these rural counties were more likely to begin planning their career decisions. Individual career pathways were not a significant indicator of career decision-making ability for rural Utah students. However, the perceived difficulty and awareness of career choice anxiety was the most significant indicator for career-choice dysfunction within the model. Future research will expand the research group and identify if characteristics indicate Carbon and Emery County school districts or are symptomatic across the secondary education system. Additional research on ameliorating choice anxiety will be undertaken with the intention of positive intervention strategies that lead to confident career choices

    We propose to address in a natural manner, the modular variable concept explicitly in a Schr\"odinger picture. The idea of Modular Variables was introduced in 1969 by Aharonov, Pendleton and Petersen to explain certain non-local properties of quantum mechanics.     Hofstadter Problem on the Honeycomb and Triangular Lattices: Bethe Ansatz Solution

    We consider Bloch electrons on the honeycomb lattice under a uniform magnetic field with 2πp/q2 \pi p/q flux per cell. It is shown that the problem factorizes to two triangular lattices. Treating magnetic translations as Heisenberg-Weyl group and by the use of its irreducible representation on the space of theta functions, we find a nested set of Bethe equations, which determine the eigenstates and energy spectrum. The Bethe equations have simple form which allows to consider them further in the limit p,qp, q \to \infty by the technique of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz and analyze Hofstadter problem for the irrational flux.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, Revte
