    Get PDF
A Learning Management System (LMS) was developed for UUM lecturers and students as a complement to the existing conventional teaching and learning methods. UUM Online Learning was the third LMS used by Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) to perform all teaching and learning activities through web applicatons. The first LMS introduced in UUM was the Learning Care which was a third party software that incurred high maintenance costs.Consequently, it was instantly replaced by an inhouse developed LMS, known as Learningzone, in July 2009.The transition time from the Learning Care to Learningzone took approximately TWO (2) semesters from July 2009 until Januari 2010 before the Learning Care was fully replaced

A Secured Model of E-Tendering Using Unified Modeling Language Approach

    Get PDF
E-Tendering systems remain uncertain on issues relating to legal and security compliance, in which unclear security framework is one of the issues. In te current situation, tendering systems are lacking in addressing integrity, confidentiality, authentication, and non-repudiation. Thus, ensuring the system requirements, consider security and trust issues has to be regarded as one of the challenges in developing an e-Tendering system. Therefore, this paper a model of a secured e-Tendering system using Unified Modeling Language (UML) approach. The modelling process begins with identifying the e-Tendering process, which is based on Australian Standard Code of Tendering (AS 4120-1994). It is followed by identifying the security threats and its countermeasure. The use case approach has been proven reliable in determining appropriate requirements for handling security issues. Having considered that, the outcome of this paper is a secured e-Tendering model. The model can guide developers as well as other researchers

Pre-implementation framework for electronic medical record project

    Get PDF
Even though the Electronic Medical Record(EMR) projects have been going on for many years, with many groups of stakeholders involved, it was found that there was no clear guidelines in terms of the stak eholders’ role in the EMR projects. This paper attempts to fill in the gap in the existing implementation plan by introducing the pre-implementation framework for the EMR projects. This framework focuses on the role and responsibilities of all the stakeholders that have been identified from the literature. Six stakeholders are involved in the EMR projects:- 1) the Government, 2)the healthcare organization, 3) the IT personnel, 4) the end-users, 5) the healthcare application developer, and 6) the suppliers. The pre-implementation framework for the ERM project was constructed by using the Activity Diagram with the Unified Modeling Language (UML) notation to show the clear roles of all stakeholders. This paper also describes four elements involved in the pre-implementation framework:- 1)Preparation of the Stakeholder , 2) Hardware Preparation, 3) Preparation of the Developer, and 4) Software Preparation. It is hoped that the pre-implementation framework proposed in this paper could be used as a guideline to implement the EMR system

Conceptual model of tacit knowledge transfer for PBL teaching method in system analysis and design course

    Get PDF
Problem Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method that is able to transfer tacit knowledge from lecturers to students based on Socialization, Externalization, Combination, and Internalization (SECI) model. However, the SECI model does not include students’ performance factor, which is an indicator to measure the effectiveness of teaching and learning processes.Hence, this study proposes a conceptual framework to evaluate the effectiveness of using PBL as a teaching method in transferring tacit knowledge by enhancing the SECI model. The methodology begins with constructing a questionnaire to investigate the SECI and Performance processes in transferring tacit knowledge from lecturers to students. The respondents are students of System Analysis Design (SAD) in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). The gathered data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to identify the effect of the significant direct relationship among the factors. The findings reveal that the SECI model fits the data for PBL teaching method in Software Engineering (SE) education.Three significant direct effects (regression weights) were obtained between the factors of SECI model. However, the direct effects of SECI processes on performance of students are not significant. The findings of this study also evidence that the SECI model is partially present in the knowledge creation processes in the PBL teaching method for SE education

A problem based learning model for IT courses

    Get PDF
A problem that always occurs in the implementation of PBL is inappropriate course assessment, the out-of-context conversation, unbalanced group formation and improper facilitation. In addition, a comprehensive PBL model that considers those factors has not been performed yet. Thus, this paper aims to determine the effective factors that might influence IT students’ perception on the PBL practices. The study involved three (3) main phases: Initial Study, Modeling, and Validation. Four main factors have been identified: PBL Characteristics, Course Assessment, PBL Practices, and PBL Perception. Based on these four factors, a PBL model hasbeen constructed.Four hypotheses were formulated and analyzed. All hypotheses have been proven significantly acceptable. The results show that the PBL Characteristics and Course Assessment factors significantly influence the PBL Practices and indirectly influence the students’ perception on the PBL implementation for IT courses. This model can assist decision makers in enhancing the PBL teaching and learning strategy for IT courses

The vendor and user organizations characteristics for COTS software evaluation and selection

    Get PDF
Since the Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software become widespread components in the market for building the systems with less time and cost, the COTS evaluation and selection becomes a non-trivial task. There are many models attempted to propose a set of characteristics for evaluating and selecting COTS software. However, these models have concentrated on the functional and quality characteristics of COTS software, leaving other effective characteristics related to vendor (the organization that developed, support, and realized COTS software) and user (the organization that integrated and used COTS software) organizations. Therefore, this paper proposed a set of important characteristics relevant to the vendor and user organizations that play important role to discriminate between COTS alternatives in COTS evaluation and selection process. Most of the related studies have been analyzed and carefully studied in the literature to identify and propose these characteristics together with their attributes and associated metrics

    Get PDF
Practitioners in the Malaysian fashion and garment industry, particularly, tailors and fashion designers are facing various challenges in satisfying the supply and demands of their garment products because of them are still providing their products and services through traditional ways.In order to sustain their businesses and remain competitive, they need to transform their current practice in fulfilling customers’ demands. In tackling this issue, this paper presents a reference model of Smart Tailor application for the garment industry practitioners. This is proposed to help reduce the time and increase the efficiency in the fulfilment of the clothing supply and demand. The study adopted the Inception and Elaboration phases of the Rational Unified Process (RUP) in developing the reference model. Starting with the Inception phase, the goal and business requirements were identified using the business model canvas approach, whilst the list of requirements was verified. In the Elaboration phase, the list of requirements was transformed into Smart Tailor design components using the Unified Modelling Language approach. Finally, the verified requirements and design components become a Reference Model of Smart Tailor for garment industry practitioners. The reference model may contribute to garment industry practitioners such as software developers, tailors, and fashion designers as well as to researchers and decision makers in the garment industry domain

Problem Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method that is able to transfer tacit knowledge from lecturers to students based on Socialization, Externalization, Combination and Internalization (SECI) model. However, the SECI model does not include the students’ performance factor, which is an indicator to measure the effectiveness of teaching and learning processes. Hence, our study proposes a framework to evaluate the effectiveness of using PBL as a teaching method in Software Engineering (SE) education to transfer the tacit knowledge by enhancing the SECI model. This paper is a part of our study that purposely wants to evaluate a measurement model of knowledge transfer process in PBL teaching method in SE education. This study used survey as a method for data collection. The respondents were students who registered for System Analysis and Design (SAD) courses. The data was analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS). The results have shown that the measurement model fits the data. Therefore, the framework is suitable for PBL teaching method in SE education. Further, this study intends to identify the relationship between SECI model in PBL teaching method for SE domain
