Teaching object-oriented systems analysis to non-IT students: A practical experience

    Get PDF
Teaching software development course is not easy even to people with computer science qualification, let alone to those without such background. However, the author personal experience has proven that this is not impossible. This paper aims at sharing the method adopted in teaching object-oriented systems analysis to postgraduate students without academic qualification or experience in information technology or computer science. Most of them are merely end-users to a number of ubiquitous applications software such as word processors. For the said course, three aspects were given special emphasis: concepts and theories familiarization, application of the theories, and familiarization of technical contents. In view of their background, with respect to the aspects addressed, the author would suggest that the method applied in the teaching of systems analysis is considerably successful for they manage to produce the deliverables required with acceptable quality

Conceptual Model of Smart Tailor Architecture for Garment Industry

    Get PDF
Smart Tailor is an architecture that integrates various stakeholders such as tailors, designers, and customers in a garment industry. The architecture provides the ability to promote, manage and fulfill supply and demands of their product via electronic ways. Currently, the implementation of the related transaction processes is done manually which may cause time consuming and inefficiency in fulfilling the supply and demands of the garment products. Therefore, this paper aims to construct a conceptual model of Smart Tailor Architecture. This study adopted the first phase of the Rational Unified Process approach, Inception, by identifying the goal of the conceptual model and the verified requirements of the Smart Tailor architecture. Then, the verified requirements were transformed into the Smart Tailor components using the Unified Modeling Language approach. Finally, the verified components by experts become a conceptual model of the Smart Tailor Architecture. The model may contribute to the garment industry stakeholders as well as researchers, decision makers, and software developers

A construct on fostering unity through virtual community cohesion

    Get PDF
This paper presents a research outcome that examines the construct that explains the cohesiveness of members of the social media in fostering unity. As the proliferation of the new media becomes rampant with the prevalence of the Internet, society tends to become individualistic and spends more time with their digital devices rather than interacting with family members, neighbors and colleagues. This phenomenon if left unchecked may contribute to disunity within the society. Hence, the objective of the study presented in this paper was to come up with a construct that can explain virtual community cohesion in fostering unity. The research approach includes consulting relevant materials on social cohesion and identifying dimensions that make up the social cohesion construct. These were then subjected to reviews by experts in the field of community cohesion. Meanwhile operational definitions of virtual community were examined and mapped against the traditional social cohesion. This results in a construct comprising of 8 components with 46 items for measuring unity through virtual community cohesion

This paper aims to determine whether social cohesion can be informed by current practices of virtual community members represented by four research variables namely experiences in using the social media, the types and preference of social media used, and their involvement in certain categories of virtual community. These four research variables were tested against the virtual community cohesion constructs to determine significant relationships and to predict their influence on social cohesion in the virtual community environment. Results of this study show that Experience, Types of Social Media and Virtual Community Involvement are current practices in the virtual community that can influence social cohesion.Social Media Preference was however not found to be significant in influencing social cohesion
