    Get PDF
The role of professional accountants is very important in a developing country. In Malaysia, the accounting profession is regulated under the Accountants Act 1967. Although universities are churning out thousands of accounting graduates, the number of professional accountants is still lacking. This study therefore attempts to investigate whether students’ level of knowledge on professional accounting background influences their career choice as professional accountants. Questionnaires were distributed to graduating accounting students at Universiti Teknologi MARA Terengganu. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results indicated that knowledge about professional accounting background is not influenced by the students’ exam grade. Results also showed a significant relationship between knowledge about professional accounting background and students career choice to become a public accountant. In conclusion, students viewed the job as a public accountant as the only career in accounting profession as opposed to others such as financial controllers, a financial analyst, or a management position. For future studies, it is recommended to have more variables and number of samples from various semesters for better and accurate result

The effects of short term and long term exposure of a tropical fish fry, Barbodes gonionotus (Bleeher), to pH and nitrite separately and in combination, were evaluated using static and flow-through bioassays respectively. The 96-hour LC50 values of pH and nitrate were 4.9 and 7.91 mg/l N02-N -respectively. However the 96-hour LC50 of pH was higher (5.4 pH unit) in the presence of nitrite 5.00 mg/l N02-N) than that without nitrite. At pH 5.00,100% mortality was found at 4.00 mg/l N02-N concentration after 48-hour exposure. Under long-term exposure, the growth rates of the fish fry decreased with increased nitrite concentrations. Fish fry grown at 2.00 mg/l N02-N had significantly lower growth rate (P < 0.05) than the control, but had a significantly higher rate (P < 0.05) than in the 4.00 mg/l N02-N (PH 7.33-7.56). One hundred per cent mortality occurred within 30 days at pH 5.00 - 7.00 when the fish were exposed to 4.00 mg/l N02-N concentration at the same time. The study demonstrated that the effects of combined pH and nitrite on the survival and growth rates of the fish fry were more serious than the effects of each factor separately

Main results from past studies had indicated that level of fear indication is affected by a wide range of elements such as bus service, infrastructure and social environment where travelling took place. However, what is less explored is that how these this travel satisfaction is not only an outcome of travel-related preferences and choices, but that travel satisfaction can act asalso be a predictor of travel-related fear.components. ThusIn thisis conceptual paper we tend to fill the gaps in the existing field of study by examining each of the significant factors that relates to feeling of fear among urban commuters especially for female commuters who live and travel by public bus in urban areas. albeit rather fragmented literature concerning travel satisfaction The paper provide . We provide an overview of the elements explaining on how different level travelof travel satisfaction, can and possibly affect the level of fear le outcomes of travel satisfaction, with a focus on on two extreme condition, (i) subjective well-beingvery satisfied, (ii) very dissatisfied.travel mode choice, (iii) travel-related attitudes, and (iv) the residential location. Furthermore, we suggest a continuous cyclical process including the four above This model highlight a few elements mentioned elements in which travel satisfaction plays an essential role which can results ; a process whichcan result in the formation of of higher or lower level of feartravel habits. This paper will discuss purely on the research methods used in this study where major independent and dependent variable of the study will be discusses especially on the fear detector model being generate through multiple regression analysis. The main focus is on the simulation and evaluation of the model model produced to measure the different level of fear indication based on the different level of satisfaction

    Get PDF
The abundance of literature on effective teaching that relates to student achievement bears witness to the ongoing quest for a better understanding of the effect of lecturers’ characteristics and attributes (inputs) on students’ learning gain. What is rarely looked at is how lecturers actually performs in the classroom and how that performance translates into students’ learning advantage. The aim of this paper is to provide an in-depth analysis of the relationship between the lecturers’ teaching contribution and students’ learning gain. The methods of analysis start with establishing construct validity of the instrument through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), using Analysis of Moment Structures software (AMOS). Data from this study were further analyzed with Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). All four dimensions of the lecturers’ teaching attributes; namely rapport, clear explanation, preparation and organization, and feedback are considered as independent variables and students’ learning gain as the dependent variable. The results of this study indicate that among the four teaching dimensions examined, the significant predictors of students’ learning gain in the process of teaching and learning are clear explanation and lecturers’ feedback

Distance impacts toxic metals pollution in mining affected river sediments

    Get PDF
The study of metals mobility derived from mining activities in an ultramafic lithology is limited. This study investigates the effects of distance on potentially toxic metals such as Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn pollution, and the geochemical processes of fluvial system downstream of an ex-copper mine (Mamut River). The toxicity level of the river was evaluated using various sediment quality guidelines, ecotoxicological risks (ecological risk and risk index) and pollution indices. The geochemical behavior and stability of these toxic metals in the solid-phase samples were also examined. The results show that elevated concentrations of Ni, Cu, and Fe in the sediments can be linked to the adsorption and precipitation of metals from the aqueous-phase samples. We found that the metal scavenging rate as a function of distance is more evident in tropical environments than it was previously thought (10 km downstream). Such an inference could be explained by the greater amount of rainfall (pH 5.5–6.5) received in the tropics and higher weathering products that could react and form stable complexes. Geochemical analysis of the river sediment indicates that Ni, Cu, and Fe in the river sediment have increased 44-, 81-, and 90-fold compared to the background values, respectively. A significant decrease in the concentration of the potentially toxic metals was found at 5.5 km downstream. The scavenging rate of Fe is the highest (1485.82 μg g−1 km−1) followed by Cu (141.48 μg g−1 km−1), Ni (10.23 μg g−1 km−1), Pb (8.12 μg g−1 km−1) and Zn (5.01 μg g−1 km−1) in the tropical river system. In contrast, the concentration of Co and Mn in the river sediments doubled as the river flows approximately 5 km downstream due to the higher mineral solubility and weaker metal partition coefficient. This study also discusses the possibility of asbestos (mainly as chrysotile in the X-ray diffraction) as a potential hidden risk present within the ultramafic setting. This case study can be extrapolated to explain the dispersion of inorganic pollutants in an ultramafic environment in a global context
